Am I right in thinking that a car has to be 25 years or older to be exported to the USA?
If this is the case, is there anyway around this?
I've been told that you can dismantle part of a car and have it shipped out as a kit - it could then be re-assembled in the USA. Is this tue? If so, how much do you have to dismantle?
If the car isn't 25 years old apparently it has to comply / pass crash test regulations - anyone know what these are or where I could find out about them?
If I declare a car to be exported to the DVLA, what do they / I have to do?
Cheers

I don't know about the first of your questions but regarding notification of export, when my Herald went to Belgium the new owner needed the V5 and so I couldn't send it off as per the details on the document. I just wrote to the DVLA saying I'd sold it and they wrote back and said thanks. If you have a buyer abroad you're not exporting it...they are.

There's a guy in Chicago who really wants my car - he's been in contact for about 3 months now.
I just wanted to know the procedure really..........

you are supposed to surrender the V5 to DVLA they will give you a 'certificate of export'. However not haveing the V5 would make it difficult or impossible to register a previously UK-plated car here in france, so i would ignore that straight away.

I have got the V5 for the vehicle.
Do they just issue the certificate, or do they come view the vehicle?

Normally they just issue the cartificate, but they can ask to see the car if they are feeling obstinate.

Surely they're going to say something about the car not being 25 years old and therefore not eligible for export to the US - so do you have to say which country it's being exported to...........?

Apparently he's posting a Bankers Draft to me this week and then going to arrange collection when I'm happy. So you guys are saying that all I have to do is tell the DVLA it's being exported, send them the V5 and bosh, job done

You could send the V5 off to the DVLA with his address filled in although they won't send the replacement V5 to an address outside of the UK...but you've done your bit. If (and I'm sure he will) he wants the logbook to help with his own import/ownership procedures then you're only option is to let him have it and notify the DVLA via a letter at a later date, which is exactly how I handled it.

Meeting the "import" regs on his side is all his responsibility.
And since there appear to be a growing number of later model RHD cars in Cali there must be some loop holes they are using.

Hmmmm, I think I might try and contact the DVLA Anyway, this is all dependant on whether I actually receive the money. I think in total I've actually been sent about £16K for my car
