I nearly bought this one about 18 months ago, but couldn't agree a price with the seller, but as these things tend to do, it came back up for sale of FB Marketplace a couple of weeks ago. Rather than nine years without an MOT, it's now ten years, but I reckoned it was worth the punt just for the digital dash! 1989 Fiat Tipo DGT 1.4 manual 41k miles (odometer shows 67k, but that's km's as it defaults to that after a dead battery) I studied to become a driving instructor years ago, in around 1990/1991. No zoom or skype in those days. The theory section was done by distance learning using the postal service to send practice multiple choice question sheets back and forth to the company running the course. Anyway, I passed the theory test, so next was the practical driving instructors driving test. The practice for this was done over a long weekend stay away down near Leominster. I went down in my K10 Micra, and received lots of mentoring in that car. I had to share the study time with another lad who was doing the course, and half my time over that long weekend was spent sat in the back of his car, which was, yes, you're ahead of me, a Tipo DGT. I remember being wow'd by that dash, and it's been a car that I would have found it difficult to say "no" to for many years. For those interested, I went on to pass my driving instructors practical driving test, but got a driving job, and never followed up with my third part of the course (the teaching part) so it just never happened. I've regretted that a few times over the years. Anyway, back to the car. All Tipos are now rare, but this one, being the DGT, has the super-dooper ever rarer digital dash. Digital dash, electric windows.....manual choke haha. Got to love the Italians How many Left website (yes, I know, just used as a guideline) says there are 5 DGT's left registered, one from 1989. I'm not sure if the lower silver section was original, possibly not, but I'll have a better look and feel about with it at some point in the next week or so. First thing to note, the exhaust might have a hole or three in it. It's fruity. A quick look underneath whilst lying on the ground showed that the rears of the sills looks pretty good, however, the fronts maybe not so, particularly the floor where it meets the sills. So, welding definitely required. The car will go up on the ramps in the next few days when all will be revealed, good and bad. The interior is really rather clean and in good condition... Car of the Year 1989 sticker still in place... Original plates... The plan? Tidy it up, fix what needs fixing blah blah...the usual. Is it a keeper? Not sure, but I've been told that I'll be very surprised at how these drive. Updates to come...

I'm super jealous, my first on road car was a Tipo, sold it as I thought I preffered my AX then bought it back with a knackered box so it went the scrappy. They drive really well, little bit slow but spacey inside and not noisy.

We bought a brand new Panda Selecta in 1992. When we would bring the car in for a service we would get a loan car. At some stage the Panda spend about a week in the workshop. The first few days our loan car was a Tipo automatic. We had to give that one back and got a Tempra. After driving these 2 cars the Panda did not do it for us anymore. We tried to make a deal on a Tipo or Tempra. We really liked both. They drove great, enough room for a small family. However we were not able to get a deal together and bought a new Volvo 440.

Platform is the same as the fiat coupe isn’t it ? So can’t be too bad. Rare old car for sure, not even that common in Italy from memory but hopefully the platform sharing will mean you can get service bits. Good luck and keep us posted. James

Absolutely awesome car! I was clearing my parents loft a few months back and found a model tipo taxi, bright yellow, my brother said chuck it in the bin but a quick ebay its £65, always amazes me things that gather a following!
Also its never to late to become a driving instructor - my dad and brother both do it, my brother trains the instructors, its changed a fair bit but good money in it

Loving the dash, it's features like that i'd never spot from a casual browse.
I've mentioned here in the past that Inspector Montalbano (on bbc iplayer) recorded in early 1990s Scicilly features various Tipos but also the top Mafia boss in The Hunter (on Channel 4 on demand) set in the 1990s Scicilly gets driven around in one too.

I had a metallic red 1.4 one of these back in 88/89, it was a nice car then, quite solid, although the looks were a bit marmite, the dash was always a fun talking point.
IIRC the panels were galvanised and the boot and bonnet?(not sure) were composite/plastic items.
I then moved onto a 16V Sedicivalvole, had a black Mk1 and a red MK2 now that was a car! Superb engine, very smooth owing to the contra-rotating balancer shafts and a very linear torque curve! 150 brake straight out the box so quite quick for the day.

Had a ‘94 M 14 boggo spec years back, drove it from Staffordshire to the tip of Scotland and back via Liverpool for the millennium with four of us in it and a load of luggage (well booze), it never missed a beat, great cars.

The welding on the Tipo is being done next Thursday, and it'll be serviced and have the centre box changed before then, so I reckon in a couple of weeks it'll be tested and, fingers crossed, on the road

Well, due to an arson attack on the welders premises, in which he lost pretty much all his equipment, and two customers cars, the work on this Tipo has stalled.

Bought a virtually new Tempra TD wagon from an insurance company in the mid 90s - part of a corrugated iron shelter had fallen on it in some high winds. Repaired it with a new roof panel and a second hand sunroof cartridge out of a Tipo and Mrs M had it for several years on the road. Great car, drove really well, had virtually the same dash as that. There are some high power lines over the A3 at Butser Hill near Petersfield and as we went under them doing 70, the dash would show 140 for a split second!

My granddad bought a dgt new in the funky green they did them in. Remember the dash well (my dad had a Monday gse at the time, so spoiled for digital dashes 😂)

I hope the new owner will enjoy his or her new car. It's something special.

I do have lots of photos of the new motors, but I'm struggling to upload them onto a hosting site, and also struggling to pull them directly to my post as my photos are almost exclusively on my phone, and I don't seem to get the option of the RR Picture Uploader when using my phone. I'll keep trying
