Ok, u have what I assume is a sealed lead acid battery that's approaching 10 years old.
The recent cold and lack of use has seen it need a couple of charges to put some magic smoke back in the box.
Question is, is it possible to rejuvenate the life of the battery by topping up, or is it not worth the hassle these days?
Is there any way to tell if a top up is required ?

Quite often 'sealed batteries are not that once you peel labels off. Ultimately depending what type of battery you have they can be had delivered with 4/5 year warranty for not much. I use a seller by the name of Tayna on the bay of evil do everything from budget to premium all at good prices.

If it's 10 years old, it's done well. That's 4 - 5 years longer than they usually last. Because I'm cheap, I've have been known to attempt just what you suggest on a couple of occasions. It is usually possible to get the cell caps off (though it'll never look the same again), and you may well find some of the cell are wanting topping up. However, even if you do this, your battery will most likely still be goosed.
I won't bother again. I'm lazy as well as cheap......

As above. Mine went the other day on an '08 Sprinter. It was the original Merc battery from factory so after 13 years, it had done well. £70 for a decent new one (there was a cheaper one for £50) so it's really not worth messing around with the old ones. The van even starts better in a morning now. Bonus.

Like has been said time for a change. Last thing you want is for it to give up on you whenyou are in the middle of nowhere.

Don't forget that the old one will be worth a tenner or so from the scrappie to help soften the blow of a new one.

I second Tanya, I ordered straight from there website, lots of choices from cheap to more expensive brands, they provide an excellent customer service, when I ordered in the afternoon my battery was delivered to me 24 hours later at very good prices in my opinion.
All the best.
Cheers.

Thanks guys, reckon that confirms my thoughts that it's probably not worth faffing about with; just get a new one and be done.
Still the old optimate seems to be keeping it alive for a couple of months at a time lol. Nothing like life on a budget.
