Phase 1 Volvo V70 Estate
1999 'V' Registration
2.4 Litre 5 Cylinder Petrol
5 Speed Manual
Olive Green Metallic with Beige Leather
MOT until August 2021
Mechanically spot on - been up and down the motorway in its with a full load. Pulls like a train and sounds great with the legendary 5 pot burble.
Purchased a few weeks back from a colleague's neighbour, after my X5 decided to let me down. Needed something reliable and roomy for a house clearout and renovation. He had the car since summer last year, and prior to that his in-laws had it for over 10 years.
Starts first time with no struggling. Idles fine. Does not overheat - the temperature sits in the middle. 262k miles, so it has only just run in! Uses no oil or coolant. EML light is on most of the time - does not affect the power of performance in anyway - common with a lot of V70s from this era. Exhaust has a slight blow, but makes the car sound beefier!
B5244S2 / 2435cc / 5 Cylinder / 140 BHP / 35+ MPG
The engine still has its power there, and it accelerates freely throughout the rev range. Had a few of these over the years and this by far feels one of the more livelier ones. Not too bad on fuel either, will return over 35 MPG on a long run.
Had an oil & filter service last summer, along with new wiper blade. Previous owner mentioned the cam belt was last changed in 2016 - but I have no proof of this, although the car does appear to have been looked after in its life.
It has the manual gearbox which are fairly rare to find these days, as a lot of these were automatic. Pulls well in every gear.
Has around £3k in bills and receipts with it. 1 x Remote Keys. Volvo Folder, V70 User Manual and Service Booklet.
The suspension has the supple V70 ride, which makes ease of all uneven road surfaces. No knocks or bangs.
Brakes stop the car ok, but you do get some shuddering and grinding on the pedal. Would benefit from front discs and pads in the future (you can get the parts for less than £70 on Euro Car Parts).
Decent tyres all round.
The V70 is in presentable condition for the year, but has the usual marks, blemishes and stone chips as to be expected for the year and mileage. The bumpers have a few scuffs on the corners. There are some marks on a few of the panels. The alloys have a some marks and kerbing. Both lower front bumper inserts are missing. There is some bubbling on the tail gate, near the number plate. No other major visible rust or rot, and nothing major on the last MOT advisory either - so it seems all solid underneath. Overall it is still a good looking, boxy old Swede.
The interior is in good order and has worn the age very well. All solid and in one piece. No rips, tears or sagging. But, there is wear on the driver's seat bolster and the front centre arm rest. Leather would benefit from a deep clean and feed, but has cleaned up well with leather cleaner. The leather still feels tight and strong. The seats are very comfortable and supportive, which is typical of these old Volvos. The interior trim panel on the tailgate needs re-attaching.
Pretty much everything still works as it should. The heater blower motor has given up the ghost, although you do get heat out of the vents and the car stills gets warm inside. One rear electric window is temperamental, so I have avoided using it and the rear wiper washer jet does not work. Front wipers, windscreen washers, all lights, horn, power steering, etc work fine. Stereo is great and the CD player works as well.
This is a reliable old workhorse which will do pretty much anything you ask of it. You just get in, start it and go where you need to. Not new or perfect and could do with a few bits sorting, but it is a 'turn key' car which will do whatever you ask of it.
These things are becoming more and more sought after, and going the same way the old 940s are. Mileage is irrelevant on old Volvos like this - they drive the same at 100k miles as they do with 300k miles on them. My last one had 186k miles on it, and being honest, this probably drives better and has a raspier engine. No-nonsense tanks which just go on forever. People who have them tend to keep them for many years and are reluctant to let them go.
Selling as I have been offered a newer C320 estate, but I would happily keep this if that didn't work out.
