I'd agree with the last few points. It's all very well concentrating on the welding first but, if it's stored outside, there's little point in tackling the rust until you fix the source of the problem. These things rust from the inside out, so the insides of your replacement panels are going to rust up in no time at all if it's still leaking into the inner structure.
I would get a replacement rain rail and a drain brush, makes sure any water than runs down the hood is exiting out of the vehicle rather than in it. The drain tubes have a little rubber flap (poor excuse for a valve) in the bottom at the exit from the inner sills. This often gets stuck causing a blockage, or debris gets stuck at the restriction. This causes a build up of rain water in the tube which leaks out at the join into the inner sill. Or as quite often happens someone gets too zealous with the brush and disconnects the pipe from its connection inside the sill/quarter. Then get a cover or half cover to give a first line of defence that you're not going to be precious about. I wouldn't think about replacing the hood until the dirty side of the bodywork is done. Just my 2 pence.
Also check the ribs on the sills either side of the jacking points, they should be drain holes but often get squashed or gunked up and need to be cleared/opened with a screwdriver. Not unheard of to have closed holes and sloshing water in the sills as you drive.

Another evening on the car. When I got the car both windows had to be pulled up to stay up. So as I'm pricing up parts to get this water tight I thought I'd strip the doors out & see what's up. Both window cables have snapped, so I stripped out the cables & tested the motors as they can get a bit tired with age. This then gave me the opportunity to clean all the black glue from the membrane. I also cut some timber to hold the glass up in the door. I also peeled off the weather strip along the top of the door as both mine are completely rusty. Luckily no rot in the door. I've been dying to see how good the paint is on this car. So as I needed to freeze the bot lock I removed the jdm rear number plate surround & gave it a T cut & polish. While the panel was off I cleaned the back panel & removed the bootlid seal & applied some deox gel to the lip. So after fixing the boot lock I rebuilt the back end. I need seals for the rear lights as they're shot to bits. I reckon with my mop & G3 compound I'll save the paint on this car.

Paint looks better looked after than mine!!!
Any thoughts on hood and rain rail yet? I’ve been looking at MOSS Europe and will most likely go for the vinyl with zip out window.
Forgive me if I’ve missed it but is yours a 1.6 or 1.8? I remember years ago..... 20 plus.... a friend looking to turbo charge one and the 1.6 was the better spec for a number of reasons including a lower compression ratio....

We have a prestige cloth hood which was a doddle to fit and still looks great 4 years later.

I bought a second hand roof for now but it's in very good condition. I'm going to buy a Robbins rain rail from ebay but to make it waterproof I also need new weather strips & electric window mechanisms. My engine is the 1.8 which for now is going to get a service once everything else is done.

G3 compound mopped the car today. Only did a few panels as everyone who walked past wanted to stop & chat. Managed the passenger door & rear quarter, the bonnet, windscreen surround & rear panel above the bootlid. I only used the coarse pad. So when my new soft pads arrive I'll do stage 2. Then on the advise of Battenberg who also has a faded mx5 I bought some meguiars ultimate colour compound which I'll do by hand. Anyway here's a few pics. The paint has a fair bit of damage but to me it's character. Front wing is too tatty to bother with so I'm going to sort a replacement, like wise the bootlid has rust around the 3rd brake light & the fold on the seam. The rear bumper would probably be better painted but I'll see what I can do with the G3 next chance I get.

Doing a great job mate. That looks a million time better than before, it’s lost that abandoned look and now looks like a tidy little project.

Struggling to find someone to come out & look at the sills for welding. Can't wait to start on the mechanicals. Buy a mig and have a crack at it yourself, practice on spare bit of metal before you start on the car itself. And if you do, don’t remove the panel your replacing before you have made the replacement panel. Use the existing panel as a buck, or template. Happy to talk you through the process if need be. It’s not hard, just patience 👍
