me and the mrs had one in around 1999 for about a year, but bought something bigger, it was a good drive.
a couple of years ago in Stockport I saw a mk1 Ka which was lowered, had Capri 13" pepperpots on and the lowest profile 13" tyres I have ever seen, it looked amazing!
its a pity they rust quickly and badly, obviously they were a cheap build for ford hoping they wouldnt last in order for the buyer to upgrade to other cars in the ford range
would I still have one? YES, but would need to be kept in a garage [don't have] and I would need a new welder!

I think they’re great cars, wife’s had 2 of them. 1st was a really early Pplate one, when we px’d it at 10 years old it still had no rust. We replaced it with a 2006 one(9 months old at the time), was much better to drive (in part that it didn’t have 100k on the clock) but it was getting pretty rusty (inc the bottoms of the A pillars) at 10 yrs old when we got shot of it.
Many happy miles done in them either bombing down country lanes or long trips too (Bristol to Glasgow in 1 hit). I even still have a set of -70mm springs and shocks in the garage I never got around to fitting. Would love a sportKa though, but they are getting hard to find that aren’t rotted out

A chap I knew had a Ka that was polybushed, lowered, decent tyres, and had minimal interior. I think it had a decent exhaust and airfilter, not much more than that, it was certainly on its original engine. It was basicly fine tuned, and what an absolute hoot it was to drive down the lanes. Id strongly recommend one.

Well I've bought one, it was heading for scrap because it wants pads and discs, and a back box so I've given scrap for it. Little bit grotty, but on a 55 plate, 1.3. Don't know what I'm going to do with it, just fancied something to fiddle with

Great cars that dissolve at the same pace as a 1970's Lancia (well not quite but....) Built to be cheap so they skimped on longevity.

Needs a bigger hammer mate.......

I got given one about 5 years ago, one of those ‘ if you take it away you can have it’ basis that I didn’t need ( or really want!) Rusted out sills and fuel filler surround, no surprises there then What did surprise me was that having used the angry grinder to chop off most of the outer sill, i was somewhat perturbed to grab the remaining spotwelded strip along the bottom edge snd just peel it away, with the resulting ‘ping ping ping’ noises as each spotweld split apart with no effort at all, and that part wasn’t rusty! Fixed it properly Sold it on quick Not keen on cars held together like that!

This one I'm getting is a 55 plate, but me and my brother are thinking of going into starting road rallies (complete novices but have to start somehwere) would this be ok for a readers rides thread given its a 96 onward shape? That's plan b if the wife doesn't want to use it for a bit, in which case it will be wheels and lows?

I'd certainly be interested to see how you get on, I can't see any one having a problem given the design dates from 1996.

Bit grotty where they all are but cleaned up ok. Needs pads and discs but my grandad rang me to look out for a cheap car for him...so I'm going to do the pads and discs, put a bow on it and park it outside his house next week. Not much but nice to be able to give something back as he virtually raised me from 12 onwards.

That is indeed a bit mental! Although I think pushing the limits for the weblink of engineswapdepot

Always had in my head a Puma engine in one would be amazing, but when the time came to sell the Ka in favour of a Clio for my sister, I had the Mito and an MX5 so couldn't justify giving my sister some pennies for it. Fast forward to 2017 and I aquired a free Puma that I made into a track car. After 3 years of abuse, the bodywork/chassis finally came to the rust like all fords do so I've picked up a not-so-rusty 52 plate Ka that had the last shred of a clutch for £150 and am currently shoehorning the 1.7 Puma engine from my puma, with FRP cams, remap, 4-2-1 and decat into it. Can't wait to drive it in the summer! Got a link to a build thread? Unfortunately not, I'm not very good at writing stuff up lol! Basically put the puma gearbox in the KA casing, with a puma bellhousing, then only needed to make one mount on the engine side. Wiring front to back will be all Puma. The biggest issue I've had is that the Puma engine sits further forward than the KA one so I'll be going down the fibreglass bonnet route to tuck it all in. I've also aquired a streetka from some accidental ebaying whoops!

I've also aquired a streetka from some accidental ebaying whoops! Most cut away the slam panel slightly to get things in. They also used the stock manifold and even that was a little tight. Pumaspeed IIRC used to sell a custom exhaust manifold for these so you could use the original bonnet. I can put you in touch with someone who had a 1.7’d KA years ago if you wish.

Each to their own, as they say. I like a KA & I really liked Starsky & Hutch, but together. Mmm

Looks like I'm getting mine back, my grandad loved it but it was clear going around the block with him its clearly past the point hes safe or confident to drive, by his own admission. Shame but it won't go to waste.

This is the Streetka, sat on lowering springs and shocks. The front and rear bumpers are shocking but it drives really well and in entertaining!
