I have been restoring a Jaguar XKR in a rented garage, documented here, however the limitations of a rented garage are well known. I had managed to get power to it, but that didn't help with the cramped conditions, temperature, noise complains from the house behind etc. I needed something better. In July 2020 I managed to get planning permission for a garage on the side of my house. I had to scale down the size a bit to satisfy the local planners, but here's the final design plan view that was approved: External size around 6.9 x 3.5 meters, cavity wall insulation, hip roof, insulated floor. I had 3 quotes for building work, ranging from £ouch to £HOW MUCH?! so went with the cheapest, a local independent builder, recommended by another builder who declined the job for being too big for him. Here's the 'before' pic: Work started at the end of October. First job for Kev the builder was to remove this wall between the front garden and back: I'll let the pictures tell the story.... In total, 5 grab lorries, at around 10 tonnes each, were needed to remove the waste soil! You can see that the ground level on the pavement side was about 1 meter higher than the base level of the garage. In order to satisfy building control, the wall here needed to be extra thick at the bottom here, and have plenty of damp proofing. Here's the steel to go over the door opening: The gap for it: And it being lifted into place, with the help of a friendly builder's merchant delivery driver: Roof structure taking shape: Gravel going against the wall for drainage: Lead flashing where the new roof meets the existing house: Last stages of the roof: 100mm Celotex going into the floor: At this point, I had a 'now or never' chance to install Under Floor Heating. So why not?! I DIYd this: Floor pour and levelling: Next phase for Kev was to build new garden walls. But first 2 more grab lorries of waste: Wall foundations being poured: Wall starting to take shape: Painted moisture barrier: Walls almost finished: Roller shutter fitted: Inside view: Walls complete: View along side: Driveway was next: Complete! Wall light fitted:

Next was onto the inside, all of which I did myself. Painting walls was a slow job, working paint into the low points of the blocks: Plumbing the UFH manifold: A warm floor! 'Daylight' LED lights (45w each) from Screwfix: Running conduit for cables, using a laser level: Electrical install complete: I bought resin floor paint from resincoat: But before painting it, I needed to smooth the floor ripples and remove the dusty layer at the top of the concrete from the sediment. Investigated hiring a floor grinder, £ouch, so instead bought this stuff from Amazon for far less: Diamond grind wheel and dust pickup attachment: Dust cyclone separator: Floor ready for paint: Paint completed:

Awesome build Is the under floor system tied into your house heating? Yes, as using the existing CH boiler was the cheapest method to heat it. I have the Honeywell EvoHome smart control system, so the unit above the manifold above is the Honeywell interface between the system and the UFH. So far it’s working fine, but it is slooooow to fully warm up (like 12 hours slow!), so I’ve got it set to maintain around 16 degrees in there during the day.

Very nice. And pretty quick too. I’ve still not finished my garage after about 6 years.

Today was car moving day but first, racking. I already had this stuff, but had to narrow the right bay in order to fit. My R-Tech 160 MIG did a good job of the welding: I've left the right bay mostly empty, to accommodate the drawer cabinet, that was in my 'shed'. The space on the left will become a workbench, i'll probably get some steel plate to fix on it for the surface. I had the help of my wonderful neighbours to get the Jag out of the rented garage: Up the road, onto the drive... And into the garage: View the other way: The curtain over the door came from this ebay seller, and is very effective at keeping the heat in when the door is open. Due to a 'senior moment' I have a 9' x 7' version of the curtain surplus, it will be on ebay soon unless anyone here is interested in it?

Ooh I do like an xk Always fancied a NA 4.2 a few years back when they were bargain basement. Think they are creeping up now. What spec is yours?

Mine's a 2003 XKR (4.2 supercharged) with optional poor corrosion prevention, and extra rust. I think otherwise standard, no sat-nav screen (so 3 gauges, which I prefer), slightly odd green-tinge 'wood' dash. It's a lovely car to drive, but so badly designed & built!

I'm off work this week, so getting on with sorting the garage out. I had shelves in the rented garage holding various bits of car and cans of primer etc. Fitted shelves in new garage, with the help of a laser line: From this excellent device (self-levelling line laser): 16' of shelving:

Love this, I am hopefully starting the process of having my garage rebuilt wider this year and was hoping to heat it in a similar way so good to see it can be done. However it would most likely need to be a standalone boiler.
Main issue is keep neighbor happy as my garage wall is there garden wall!

Not much to report, been moving car related stuff from 'shed' to new garage. I have 2x 40w LED panels, recently given to me by a mate, that would have originally been fitted into a suspended ceiling. They fitted nicely under the top shelf of my racking, over the bench area. I just needed some way to mount them. So I designed some simple brackets and 3D printed them: The STL file is on thingiverse here if any use to anyone else.

6mm steel plate arrived for the bench top, which I had ordered from metals4u. I bought a 10cm strip to use as an upstand at the back also: Welded into place: Used my R-Tech 160 MIG. Wire feed was maxxed out for this, power slightly short of full. It's currently loaded with 0.6mm wire, it really needs 0.8mm for thicker steel like this, so that more wire material is fed in for a given feed speed. Anyway, it did a good job: Painted the welds and upstand with POR15 paint. I don't see much point in painting the bench surface, as it will get scratched. I'll probably go with a light oil coating to prevent the steel rusting. Or any other suggestions?
