My Jumbuck went for it's MOT yesterday with reasonable expectations of a pass. A friend , who is a very good mechanic, does odd jobs I can't, had let me put it on his lift a while back and we both thought it looked ok. Engine wise it's only done 46,000 so that is good. Well... The tester spotted some tiny tell-tale's and used his testers corrosion knocker. B*gg*r The front repair is a right sod to do, the rest not so bad. The trouble is if I get rid what do I replace it with? It's so useful and any replacement either has a scene tax or is older. So it's out with the MIG, cutting discs and get stuck in.

Pickups seem to carry huge scene tax ATM...even the roughest Ford Ranger will set you back £1500+ and that will probably be rotten with moon mileage.
If you're reasonably competent I'd be tempted to fix up the Jumbuck rather than spending that kind of money and inheriting someone else's problems.

From one Paul to another, yup, fixing it is the current plan. I will do it to get through the mot nothing more. Further down the road I may revisit the repairs as I have an idea... PS I'm a bit more than reasonably competent

This is a good thing because it means it's been found early whilst it's repairable. It's just a small bit of stress and a lot of temporary inconvenience. 👍
Every cloud has a silver lining. Mostly when it's someone else's cloud and not mine!
Just think how many cars are not going for an MOT because of their age. There's going to be a lot with hidden rot going unnoticed before it's either beyond repair of something has fallen off!

Thanks Grizz.
Ferny, it's the potential for hidden rot that worries me. The front area is where the subframe mounts and is a complex construction with three layers in places. My friend is letting me use his two post lift so that helps enormously. It's a shame because mechanically it is great.

It’s not scene tax, it’s just the fact that you can earn money with them. Same with vans.

Vans simply don’t seem to carry the same value though - a quick brimsk over FB marketplace shows me 4 Transit Connects all for sub £1k, all within 10 miles...no pickups. Wonder if it’s a rarity thing too...supply & demand an that.

Wonder if it’s a rarity thing too...supply & demand an that. I think there is a rarity factor. New trucks are mostly bought as a tax dodge by fashionable management, and also for function in the case of farmers etc Most of the older trucks around, possibly beyond 10 years old, are starting to be survivors if they have a working history. Those of us that like trucks, for various reasons and are able to insure them for leisure and domestic and pleasure use actually have a small pool for vehicles to choose from. This is just a guess, but there could be other valid reasons of course. I also think that generally commercial vehicles get less general attention than cars etc, so though a full mechanical MOT is passed, they may actually not get as much attention on body, chassis etc, as it is cheaper to buy a replacement than pouring labour into a 5-10 year old starting to rust and fall apart.

That's the first day done and as anticipated it proved to be worse than expected. I tackled the front area first next to the subframe mount. Stood back when I finished the last bit and noticed that about 10" of inner wing had disappeared with the hammering! So sort that out as well. Next was the small hole by the front spring hanger. That soon became a large hole 10" square. Bigger. Current state is that is all plated and needs welding. Tomorrow should see it all done. There are no apparent indications of this rot, it's all under the factory coating. The construction is such that water can get into almost all of the voids in the structure so I'm guessing that long term I will be looking at scrap.

I thought that loophole was closed ages ago? Depends what you mean by loophole. If you run a business & can justify a van then there is no loophole, providing you declare any personal use. Which of course everyone does 🙈😉

There was a period where everyone was getting them as company cars as they had lower BIK I think that was the loophole that has been closed.

BIK is very high on most pickups. Not sure if it used to be any different.
But as they are a Commercial vehicle, business owners often run them as they can class them as a company-owned Commercial vehicle and not a private company car, so will try and avoid all the costs associated with that.
Electric cars are rated at zero BIK, so that is where the focus is shifting to for company cars and also why I find myself looking at new Jaguar I-PACEs a lot recently.....

The welding was all finished on Thursday but not before some excitement. Had a little fire which unfortunately caught the wiring loom. All repaired but now the illegitimate Malaysian whore will not start. Now abandoned at my mate's unit until Monday. Not sure if a a gallon of unleaded and a box of matches is called for yet.

No petrol required Turned out that there was a connector (plug and socket) on the passenger side where I had pulled the carpet up to prevent the same "issue" as the drivers side. Said connector had one corroded pin. The fuel pump pin . Now bypassed by my mates roving auto sparky (who did the fault finding) and running as it should. Oh, and MOT'd
