Hi,
i havent been on this forum for 6 or 7 years, i used to have a thread about my puch.
Like a real project, it got never finished, stood in the shed for years and sold it like a year ago.
Like a complete knobhead i started a new one and it is already getting out of hand and made for some weird adventures wich lead to also buying a 99 daihatsu applause and another 98 charade
I bought a 98 daihatsu charade as a daily driver, made a few minor modifications.
I bought a set of 14 inch rims of an honda civic, didnt like the honda caps in the middle, so i bought a set of daihatsu ones
they didnt fit the center of the wheel, so i thought: let me take of the honda ones and just superglue the daihatsu caps onto it.
these are the honda ones, but wait, there is more!! because what did i see when i turned them around?
It works and looks better than the honda ones.
Just to make the daily drive to work (2 x 60 km, 2 x 1 hour drive) a bit more relaxed, i got myself a set of sirion seats (the 1.3 101 bhp version), which are way more comfortable than the standard charade seats.
Planning on swapping the foam of the passengerseat to the drivers seat, because the driverseat foam is getting soft and it is making the seating position not as good as it could be.
I also put in some audio: i have a alpine headset, combined with a jbl 6 channel amp, a 12 inch jbl subwoofer, a 3 piece jbl composet around the doors and a regular set of 3 way jbl speakers in the back.
If you drive 2 hours a day, you want to have some good sound.
Than the modification virus was starting to act up and i wanted some more power, well here the misery starts.
The charade has a 1.3 84 bhp little engine (105nm @ 5000 rpm and 84bhp @ 6500 rpm) which is a little too highrevving to my liking.
Started looking around for options and i found a 1999 applause with a 1.6 99 bhp engine (138nm @ 3600 rpm and 99 bhp @ 6000 rpm)
I can only imagine how much more relaxed that would drive, because of the 30% more torque almost 1500 rpm lower in the rev range and a powerband of 2500 rpm instead of 1500 rpm..
Found one pretty nearby and the askingprice was 600 euro, without MOT.
I went there and told him i wanted to have a drive, to see if the gearbox made less rpm on the highway than the charade does.
So, i was driving on the freeway, not a care in the world, minding my own business and all of a sudden, the bonnet flew open!!!
Scared the curse word out of me, made my heartrate jump up to the level of an 90's raver on xtc.
Pulled over, closed the bonnet and drove back to the seller.
Told him what had happened, he said that he couldnt sell it anymore, because of the bonnet being al wrinkly
Laughing very very hard in my head i said: why don't you just get a new bonnet from the wreckers??
Knowing bloody well an applause isnt exactly like an astra, which can be found by the dozen.
So if you, in some mysterious way, could find an applause at the wreckers, than go find yourself a white one.
So i made him an offer of 350.
We ended up with a price of 500, but WITH MOT.
So i had found my engine and gearbox.
But this is the tricky part, i use my charade daily to go to work and didnt want to try swapping the engine in 1 weekend, because it never works out the way you want it to.
don't fancy calling my employer on monday morning saying i cant come to work, because my car doesnt have a (running) engine in it.
Started to do some research of what was neccesary to get the applause engine and gearbox in to the charade.
The applause engine should be a plug and play swap into the charade, the charade basicly came with a version of this 1.6, the gti.
Only thing was, if i wanted to put the applause gearbox in, which i do, because it has a shorter throw and makes less rpm on the freeway and has driven like 50k less kilometers, i would need the driveshafts of an charade automatic.
The rustholes on the dailys doorsils are now getting probably too big to get it through the mot, last year it only just went through.
So i was starting to think of how much it would cost to get it through, besides the rustholes, it needs 2 new tyres and probably some other stuff.
Maybe i could use the money an mot would cost and use it to get another charade?
And try to do the swap before the end of the dailys mot, end of april?
I found one, asking price was 400, after some emails were sent back and forth, the seller told me the headgasket was probably blown and a bearing in the engine was on its way out, we settled on a price of 150.
It had some big pros for me: it had an electric roofwindow, electric windows, a spoiler, tinted windows and it was an automatic.
Because of the front fenders being another colour, i wanted to have a testdrive, to see if it would pull to the left or right during driving or hard braking, because i thought it could have had some damage.
The doorsils had no rust and the previous owner probaby did some work on the car around the wheelarches, so no rust there as well.(hence the black paint)
It also came with an extra cilinder head, throttlebody and an extra automatic gearbox, 2 sets of headlights, a set of taillights and some extra stuff, like a frontfender, a bag with some panels with switches for the elecric windows (right window doesnt work properly)
Best part is that it has the same colour as my daily does, so i can just switch over the front fenders and the beam in the enginebay (in which the bonnet latches) so, everything has the same colour.
i also going to use the rearbumper of the daily, to have non colour sprayed bumpers instead of 1 colourpainted rear bumper
So i went for a drive and a emergency braketest to see if the car would pull to a side, it didnt.
It just stalled, which i found weird, but oke.
Drove on, found out it didnt go above 70 km/h and started to sound metally and not metallica like metally.
Whilst approaching an roundabout, the whole engine just died on me.
tried starting it, but the startermotor would only say KLIK, KLIK, little startermotor cant start the engine when it is seized up, now can it??
So gave the seller a call, told him where we were and he came to tow us back.
So again, like with the applause, i told the guy i still wanted it and offered him 125 euro and no costs putting the car on my name (some sellers charge you like 15 euro for it)
The seller agreed, so i drove to the nearest gasstation, got a towing cable and hooked up the new charade behind my daily charade.
After having had a call of my insurance that the car was insured, my friend got in the daily and i went in the new charade.
So he pulled me like 150 km to the farmer where i have stalled the applause, i can tell you it was petty chilly sitting in a car, with heating that doesnt work.
So now it is standing behind his big brother, waiting to be soon pulled out again to do the big swap.
one plus of the new car is that it has the "luxury" interior which means it is a fairly good match with the colour of the sirion seats.
I met this guy in the village i live in and he used to be a mechanic and he has a garagebox 500 meters away from my home, so i hope he is willing to help me do the swap.
So for now the plan is to use the new charade to swap the applause engine into and when it is done, both the applause an daily will go to the wreckers.
I will take of the catalytic converters and try selling them, and see if i can sell some other bits and bobs, just to see if i can make some money with it.
Last year the reardampers were replaced and i have a set of frontdampers and 3 cm loweringsprings as well, so the reardampers of the daily plus the new dampers and springs will have to go onto the new charade.
And while i am at it, doesnt it always go this way?, replace some bushings, and maybe some other stuff, i also have new brake pads for the rear and wheelbearings, who were supposed to be fitted to the daily.
Not planning on tuning the engine besides using some oem parts on it, to give it some more bhp.
Also maybe use a 1st gen applause intake and exhaust manifold to free up some ponys
The pistonrings of the applause are probably shot, because it uses quite a lot of oil.
So the plan is to use the pistons and cilinderhead of the 1.3 ( it has a better flow than the 1.6), maybe skim the head 0.9 mm to raise the compression somewhat.
The camshaft of the charade has more lift and more degrees than the applause one, but i will only put that in, when i have another job.
Because i drive a lot of kms to and from work and i have a really bad compensation for it, i end up paying to go to work, so i really don't want the car to be using more fuel just yet
I want to go to another employer, who has better compensation is about 60 km each day instead of the 130 i drive nowadays. (i have moved, so it went from 120 to 130)
Well, this was a big first post, i am done now
Wishing you all a great day and i hope to have some progress soon
