I've been meaning to make a thread about my Golf for ages on here. The time is finally here. Like a lot of folk I got some itchy fingers during lockdown in the Spring and started to do some work on my mk2. So here's where I've gotten too so far. Before: Copied from my ScottishVAG thread - Started off wanting to change the front cross member since its pretty rotten. Ended up hauling the engine out to give the bay a proper clean down. Hopefully get it painted once everything opens up again. Also gonna refresh all the nuts and bolts, bushes and get a load of stuff powder coated. There's plenty of time isn't there? Taken a few more bits out yesterday. Just working out whats best to do about the wires for painting. Don't fancy taking them all out. Once the bay is closer to being ready for paint the subframe will be coming off. Also ordered some paint for the gearbox, block and some other bits.

Been treating the rust/removing it, and cleaning all the old waxoyl/grease/curse word for ages. Must have went over it about 20 times and found more hidden curse word every time. Got some zinc primer down, then a couple of coats of high build. Got a little filling to do then a bit more primer, then colour. Maybe even before Christmas. Fingers crossed. Then I can start putting it back together. This is basically where I stand as of December 22nd. I did a little bit of filling and sanding the last few days, then tonight gave it another 2 coats of primer. My paint arrived today as well, so I should get some colour on there over the Christmas break. Then it can go back together. I'm really excited about the reassembly. Should be good fun! Cheers for reading!

That looks fabulous! Cracking work going on I passed my driving test in a Mk2 Golf (only a 1.3C!) and always had a soft spot for them. Only ever owned a Mk3 GTi though.

I've got a mk3 VR6 that I use day to day as well. The mk3 is a different kettle of unreliability and rust compared to the mk2

Excellent. It's really sad that I looked at the pile of bits and recognised the Mk2 golf panel... but then I have just been stripping mine further.
I consider this timely inspiration to get everything absolutely spot-on...!

Been slow progress the last couple of weeks, doing the loom. It's cold in the garage. Most of it is actually done now. The headlight loom and main ECU loom are 100% done. Just the last section to go. Just so happens to be the worst section too, lots of knackered terminals, corrosion and cut wires, so waiting on terminals, pins and appropriately colored wire to arrive next week and it'll be done. I think. Really happy with how it's turning out. Looks much better than the hard plastic sheathing that comes on the car. Some not very exciting photos. More soon. Cheers

Nice one! The loom on ours is going to be getting a thorough refresh, I'm pretty dure the car was parked at the bottom of the North Sea for a few years... I might ask you for some photos of how it all goes together as well, since I've lost a lot of the pictures from my strip down

Nice work there, Going to be a great car when it's finished, you can tell that already by the degree of effort so far, Looking forward to seeing future updates, Nigel

It's not going to be a show car, that's for sure. But it should be in a state to last another 20 or 30 years, hopefully.

Right then, can't believe I've not posted anything since February. Only feels like a month or 2! As you'd hope, I've made quite a bit of progress since February. Installed the refurbed and painted servo, 16v master cylinder and new copper pipes. First time making up full pipes like this. It was quite therapeutic, even in the cold. Not 100%, but good enough. Been working on improving my zinc plating set up and knowledge, it's gotten progressively better as I've went on, so probably going to go back and do the initial stuff again at some point. These bits are for the subframe and steering rack. Got Superpro bushes for the wishbones. Subframe powdercoated, painted, zinc plated and put back together. Looks pretty good Refreshed the shifter. Powdercoated, plated and new bushes. Before After - I know that weather strip isn't in the right place, I fixed it before fitting. Cleaned up the surface rust in that area too and painted it up. Subframe back in the car. Engine looks tiny Then manhandled back in place - cheers to beefdogg for the muscle. Front crossmember back on too Cleaned up the fuel rail. Changed the seals on the injectors. The plastic casing around the wiring was broken, so glue it back together. Removed rust and plated all the bits. Starting to put the bay back together Gear linkage in after plating. This is one of the jobs I'll need to go back and do again. It came out quite dull. Removed the timing pulleys, cleaned them up and painted them. Reinstalled with new timing belt. Got quite a bit more to show after this, but will post that up in a few days.

Excellent work you’re doing. The home plating is particularly impressive. Keep up the great work.

The home plating is particularly impressive. John I looked at home plating kits but the cost of getting it done professionally was so inexpensive that I decided it wasn't worth the bother. He's doing a nice job though.

Teaboy, I know you’re a 911 guy. I have an SC and when I did my suspension I got all the bits and bobs yellow zinc plated (and the tool kit done in clear zinc) at a plating shop near Hartford, Connecticut (USA), where I live. This area still has aerospace and defense contractors so we’re lucky that such specialists still exist. And yes, it was so inexpensive that I wanted to pay more.
Best, John

Cheers guys! Yeah it's not too costly to pay to have done - if there's someone close by who can do it. But there doesn't seem to be many people close by who electroplate, which I find odd. But if I find out there's a process or job I can do myself, I'll almost certainly at least give it a bash. I really enjoy the process of getting rusty bolts to look new.

Fantastic work, even if it means I'm now considering plating everything... In the yin and yang of GTI restoration, it seems every step you take forwards, I find another hole where there used to be car...!
