Hello everybody,
I've been press ganged into the purchase of a 1959 tractor from a family friend. Its one family owner from new with a two numeral and three digit plate carefully painted on the seat.
Anyway the question I have is will the DVLA accept a Somerset County Council registration document (which family friend has) which states owner details, date of registration and plate issued in the same way they accept old V5 documents ?
I assume that pre DVLA that each council kept its own records but these were passed to the DVLA when it was formed in 1965 ?
Any help gratefully received as no point trying to phone the DVLA at them moment.
James

Yes they should do but have you checked if it is on the system already?

Yes they should do but have you checked if it is on the system already? Doesn't appear if you do a tax or mot check - I doubt if anything has every been done since it was registered in Somerset in feb 1959 ! I assume it is still in the name of the father who bought it not the son we are buying it off. James

The only thing that I would check is that the chassis number is present and correct, one of our Ferguson's lost its chassis plate over the years and they were funny about retaining the original number despite having the card logbook still in my dad's name.

Following a fraud back in the early 1980's all non allocated numbers were voided from the system by the DVLA. So if you hadn't transferred your old green log book details to the DVLA - they were lost ( it happened automatically if you taxed the vehicle). However if the year of manufacture of the tractor can be verified by a DVLA recognised club they will issue you an age related number . They m i g h t give you your original number back if you ask them very nicely, but no guarantees.

This happened to a friend of mine some years ago with a 1930s Morris, the car had been re issued with an age related plate, the original number had not been re issued, (you may need to watch out for this), with owners club verification and some supporting documents I can't remember which documents he had in his possession, the original number was re issued as non transferrable and must remain with that vehicle.

A lot of local authority records were destroyed before DVLA took over.

Following. See here: www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/old-vehiclesAs you have original period documentation, assuming you can get an owners club to verify age then you *should* be able to retain the registration. Bear in mind that even in that best case, if they let you keep the number it will be non-transferable, so you won't be sitting on a fortune. Good luck 🤞

Best of luck. I've always found DVLA to be plenty reasonable, as long as you play by the rulebook - the key is to have your ducks lined up in military precision and you'll be fine. If you have dating evidence from a DVLA recognised club, and an original logbook signed and delivered to them, there's little wiggle room for them.
Edit: if you need help with the V55/5 then give me a shout, I've recently gone through that form with regard to a 1981 vehicle so know what can be omitted for older chod.

Quick thread update - with the help of the kind man from the DB owners club and some photos we managed to get a V5 with the original plate on it (non-transferrable). The only slight faff was that the man at the owners club insisted it had to be road worthy including lights in case the man from the ministry wanted to inspect it. Thanks everybody. James

My old dauphine was no where near road worthy condition when it was inspected, its just to verify the vehicle is the one you say it is.
Good work though, the older I get the more I keep looking at old tractors, I don't even own land to have or use one on lol

Good work though, the older I get the more I keep looking at old tractors, I don't even own land to have or use one on lol I probably ought to point out it's my wife's tractor and I was a touch ambivalent about getting it. But now its here and after a bit of work with the boy it now starts and stops(ish) with working hydraulics it's really grown on me. It's very slow (15mph) and noisy but feels a bit unstoppable as 2 and a bit tonnes of engine gearbox and chassis probably should do. On a sunny day pootling down the lanes it's a happy thing. Haven't yet gone the full Somerset but I see tractor meets and runs in my future ! James

15mph can be plenty depending on just how much play there is in the steering and front end....
