Hello all! So I've ended up with a 6N, never thought I'd actually buy one considering how quickly they're disappearing from the roads, but the combination of the Ebay auction ending in the evening of my birthday, and a stupidly low bid that was subsequently not outbid has begun my journey to save this pistachio green polo 6N. After placing the winning bid I started to try find the history of the car (always the correct way to do that ) and I found an old retro rides for sale ad from 2015! (https://forum.retro-rides.org/thread/176186/1995-polo-6gl-lady-owners). From the photos in that ad versus what I was presented with after my 3 hour drive to collect it, its clear she's had a tough 5 years. Plans are to fix the issues that are needed to get it through the MOT first, such as the speedo and taco not working, as well as rust that i assume will be everywhere (even though I was guaranteed by the seller there was no rust other than the front bumper), then to start to tackle the bodywork and paint issues. I know that I'll end up doing a combination of both as the body work being so sorry is already bothering me, but stay tuned for progress....

Niice, your're absolutely right, they're nearly extinct, which is a shame. We've just bought a 1.4L two door in Fjordblau with 26k from new on the clock, couldn't resist it, has a bit of old lady damage, but otherwise is absolutely lovely, going to get a slight lowering, polybushes and my passat winter steels. Will bookmark this, carry on

My old next door neighbour had one of these in the same colour - I *think* it was a 16-valver.
I like a 90s VW - I had a 96 Golf GTi about 15 years ago and still maintain it was a very pleasant place to be.

So, started digging into the rust, working on all the spots popping up, hitting them with the wire brush, then rust converter, then I will go back round with some pistachio matched paint to cover the spots, all of the paint is very rough so I'm not worried about doing a concourse level job here. (for now!) then we decided to hit the backs of the sills with the wire brush to assess how bad they were, BIG mistake (just over a month before the MOT), the passenger side just crumbled away under the brush, so now I need to find myself a local welder. Then we decided to try the drivers side, one look with the torch and theres a suspicious amount of rubber underseal type paint in here thats not found anywhere else on the polo..... off with the rear wheel and out with the wire brush attachment on the drill and boom....... found some pretty poor old welding, and a big hole, fantastic! So now it needs welding done on both sides, need to speak to some local garages and see if they think whole sills or just patches will be best But on the positive side, I couldn't help myself with some of the visual updates, so a set of Hella colour magic lights all round, some minor buffing of some of the old battle scars and a new VW badge for the front grill is the start of the visual updates, more to come!

Run around in a 1.6 6N1 myself, love the colour of yours.
I've had 2, I did have blue magic colors on my first one and I did have a little trouble come MOT time as they don't have red reflectors on them, so I had to get some stick on one which looked a bit curse word.

Ive always loved the look of these too, I'm going to just swap the rear ones back to the stock lights for the MOT, as these ones have a LHD passenger side so my reverse light and my fog light are both red

Well I feel I've done enough recently to post a little update, starting with the MOT, I fixed all the bits I knew about being issues including replacing the gauge cluster that was not working, treating as much rust as I ould see, and replacing a couple of blown exterior bulbs. I also replaced the broken radio, and replaced the heater control bulb that had blown. We booked the car in for its sills welding and for a pre-MOT inspection to see what it needed to pass. Much to my and my partners shock, the work needed to pass the polo totalled over £1k, so we immediately told them to not bother with the work and we would come collect the car and scrap it (we had previously discussed if it needed more than a couple hundred quid we shouldn't throw any more money at it). After a sit down and a day of contemplating we decided that we just loved this polo too much to let it go and there was nothing we would really want to replace it with other than another 6N, so it then became a discussion of fix this one (rather the devil you know) or roll the dice on another couple hundred quid polo and risk a similar outcome later in the year. we decided to just pull the trigger and keep this one on the road so rang back the garage and green lit all the work to be done. The main problem for the MOT was the sill welding (as shown in my earlier posts!) as well as a number of small spot under the floor, this is now all patched properly and sealed in with paint (since these photos I've gone over the primer with some Pistachio green paint). I also had to replace the lower half of the front bumper as you may have noticed from earlier pictures it was well past saving, so I picked up a Chagall blue full bumper from eBay for £20, result! set to work spraying the bottom portion Pistachio Green in the fire escape of my building and fitted up, makes a world of difference to the front end. Now with 12 months MOT under its belt its time to start working on the cosmetics once again, picked up these golf MK3 alloys for £51 on eBay with 4 practically new Continentals on them, another result! Unfortunately because they were off a MK3 golf rather than a polo the tyre profile is far too large, they are 55 profiles and really need to be 45s, so it now looks like a bloody Donk oh well thats an issue for some point down the line when my wallet is a bit heavier again!
