Love it that the post starts... Whilst waiting, or I got bored or similar. Then just casually lists another massive improvement to the car It is true though something that I've been planning to do on my old Saab for ages, just not pulled my finger out. I do like a set of clean wheels it really lifts the look of a car - new tyres on old dull wheels just looks poor Just expecting MOT station to add an advisory that car mileage suspect as car in too good a condition... As always loving your work. I'm not second guessing the MOT result - I always expect a fail (on something) and a few advisories to sort before she goes - if I don't get that I will be very pleased. Thanks for following Now goes off to continue to search for tyres........

So from midnight tonight the E38 is insured
I had tried to add it as a temporary additional vehicle last week but the on line application to do that was rejected
I then spoke to the insurers about this rejection and was informed as the car was over 15 years old so that couldn't be done
I asked what it would be to transfer over the policy from another car and "real person" said they couldn't give me quote and any if I did it over the phone there would be an admin charge and then went off on one about not being possible due to continuous insurance rules.......
When they had finished I said I was very familiar with the rules and would SORN the SLK to comply with the law (DVLA) and it would be kept off the road so thanks for answering my questions and I'll do it all on line closer to the time
So tonight
1. I transferred the insurance over from the SLK to the E38 - Premium increase to pay £0.44 (lets see what it says I need to pay when I need to transfer it back)
2. SLK declared SORN from 31/01/2021 (so I don't fall foul of the continuous insurance rules) will be kept off the road for the next month
Tomorrow we will see what surprises I get - the first one will be filling it with fuel!!!!

£89 of finest unleaded added to the tank - shows you how much petrol prices have come down since I last filled it up - it was always a £100 fill
Delivered it to the MOT testing station - it's a horrible drive but not unexpected as alignment and tracking looks awful by eye.
Instructions left on the passenger seat on where the weights (water barrels) need to go
Alignment first so at least it drives straight and nicely then MOT time I think he's slotted it in for midday

Well that was unexpected
No MOT test could take place............
I think from the description given by the mechanic the "infamous BMW exploding coolant hose" has let go and it dumped it's coolant whilst the alignment was being carried.
I may have access to a spare locally to sort the issue for MOT and then I'll order one from BMW

That's a real shame, especially after all the work you've already done. I had a rad hose go on my old Saab 99 whilst it was on the MOT ramp and the tester was rather narked about the state it left his work area in ( I did clear it up as best I could though!)

That's a real shame, especially after all the work you've already done. I didn't expect a trouble free resurrection I had a rad hose go on my old Saab 99 whilst it was on the MOT ramp and the tester was rather narked about the state it left his work area in ( I did clear it up as best I could though!) Luckily the guy doing the alignment isn't doing the MOT test - he didn't like getting wet much I've replaced quite a few hoses over the years but not this one. At least the alignment is now done - he said everything was out and needed adjustment - which I expected as when I stripped it all down I replaced a lot of the bolts so any datum marks I'd made were pretty pointless

Will rode to the rescue with a spare hose - later design SH hose fitted and filled with water as I didn't have enough antifreeze to fill it a 50/50 mix - they only had orange stuff and I don't like mixing antifreezes They can't test it today but I'll leave it with them to test in the morning when they have a slot free Looks like I'm walking home today

Wow, you're even filling the tank of the 7 Series for the new owner! I wish the people I buy a car from would be as generous!
Top man you are, sir.

Wow, you're even filling the tank of the 7 Series for the new owner! I wish the people I buy a car from would be as generous! Top man you are, sir. I was always going to fill the tank for the alignment - trying to substitute weights for 75 litres of fuel was too much of a faff Plus it proves that the tank doesn’t leak (common problem with the E38 apparently according to the internets and a real cow of a job as it a saddlebag tank over the propshaft and underneath the rear seats) I’d never sell a car on fumes - that’s just a horrible way to treat anyone buying a car from you - I like to make sure there is at least enough fuel in a car to get the buyer home - obv if the buyer is from lands end or john o groats I might have to reconsider that If I get an MOT on it I have to tax it to get the plate of it and I’ll run it around for a couple of weeks just so I don’t feel robbed by the DVLA and to make sure no other hoses have “issues”

That's very honorable. I hate buying a car miles from home and then having to find the nearest petrol station.

I hate buying a car miles from home and then having to find the nearest petrol station. You and me both - nothing apart from a breakdown on collection day is a bigger piddle off than a car on fumes with the range saying zero and the low fuel light blazing away I have a mate who’s car always has the fuel light on - only ever puts a tenner in max - he says the car is worth sod all every time he puts fuel in it he could end up walking away from it - if it breaks - he’s playing the same game with tiiming belt too so maybe that’s why - I just think of the time wasted in fuel stations!!!!!
