Well, it seems that the version of the TH400 trans used in my Oldsmobile isn't so much a verson with "a few differences" to the regular one but is in fact a completely different trans which bears a passing visual resemblance to a TH400 and GM Hydramatic decided to call the same for a laugh and specifically to pish me off 40 years later...
The sprag is different (and of course the one we have is wrong in some other 3rd way) and then even when the manual suggests 2 or 3 variations mine is a 4th.... The valvebody is a prime example.
Example A:
None of the diagrams we have (so far) show this adjustment screw and tapered end stop. Not knowing what it is, how to adjust it, we have decided best to leave tha one well alone.
Next up on the "oh thats curious" list is the 2-3 Servo which appears to have no piston inside it (as per the pre-1971 iluustration). its always been like that as far as we can tell. Meh. It worked before, it will work again.
But WTF?
Anyway, a good illustration of how hard I hurt this one is the low roller, which now doesn't.
Can't really see so well in the photo but its actually buckled.
Can't wait to have a go at breaking the new one
As soon as we get the wrong bits exchaged the rebuild continues.
This is the good thing about buying parts in the UK...
