JAGUAR XJ6 X300 XJ 3.2 EXECUTIVE - 216 BHP
AUTOMATIC
1996 ‘P’ REGISTRATION
ULTRA RARE TITANIUM MICA METALLIC
FULL GREY LEATHER
12 MONTHS MOT
For sale is my Jaguar XJ 3.2 Executive. This chassis is referred to as the X300 model, and known the be the most durable of all the XJs with the bullet proof engines.
I purchased this as a stop gap to use whilst one of my cars was in for repair. It was local but had a short MOT. However, it was finished in the ultra rare ‘Titanium Mica’ grey metallic paintwork (LFA paint code).
Only a handful of the X300s were finished in this colour. I have had over 40 Jaguar XJs over the years, but never one finished in this combination. It still turns heads anywhere you go!
Since purchase, I have had it MOT’d and it will require two new rear exhaust boxes to pass and sort the emissions. I have two new exhaust rear boxes on order. The MOT will be done by Wednesday 23rd September. A few advisories, but nothing horrific and generally all solid underneath for a 24 year old Jag.
The car is mechanically sound, and drives like an XJ should. It starts first time, and idles in the correct manner. There is no overheating. It gets to the optimum temperature and sits there. Cooling fan kicks in as it should. There is a slight oil leak from the filter housing area and a weep on the rocker cover (it's an old Jag!). Sometimes the belts squeak on start up, most likely a dry pulley. Quietens after a few minutes. One of the down pipes has a slight blow, but the car sounds much quieter with the new rear back boxes.
'AJ16’ / 3239cc / Straight Six / 24 Valve / 216 BHP / 140+ MPH
It has the legendary and robust 'AJ16" 3.2 litre straight-six engine. This has plenty of power and low-down torque. Pulls well throughout the rev range, with no hesitation or power loss. The V8 engines are also smooth, but they suffer from various components failures. These six cylinder units can trace their blood line back to the 50s Jags, and go on forever.
The gearbox is good and the gears change as they should. Jaguar really did get the gearboxes good. Goes through all the ratios fine and kicks down with no shuddering.
Suspension is smooth and composed - irons out all bumps and anomalies in the road. It truly is a magic carpet type ride in this car. However, for a large car, it still handles impressively well and you can confidently throw it into corners at speed. It's no Lotus Elise, but will surprise you with how it behaves. You can hear a clonk over uneven road surfaces, which is likely an anti-roll bar link or bush (common on these cars but no mention on MOT).
The brakes are fine. They stop this car well and there is no noticeable shuddering or pulling to one side.
The tyres are decent and matching on each axle. They have plenty of life left. There is a whine from a rear wheel bearing or diff, which quietens down at higher speeds above 60mph.
Being an upmarket model, it is built to a high quality standard and you can appreciate this from the fit and finish. It is a pleasure to drive and long journeys are completed with ease - you get out at the other end feeling refreshed. Anyone who goes for a spin in the car always give positive comments about how it drives and also on the classic appearance of the interior.
Everything works as it should, which is to be expected from a car which cost over £40k when new. The seatbelt warning light comes on which is usually a loose connection under the seat. There are currently no other warning lights on the dashboard cluster.
The car is in presentable condition, but it does suffer from the usual defects from this era of XJ: the bonnet, roof and boot lid paint has grazed and the lacquer has peeled. Remarkably, there is no rust or rot on the body (apart from one tiny scab on the front of the bonnet) – it is solid, especially compared to many others out there. There are marks, blemishes and stone chips as to be expected on a 20 year old car. The bumpers have a few scuffs on the corners and the NSF door has a couple of dents. It is not new or perfect, but still looks special and classy - no one would think you paid less than £2k for this lump of metal!
Remember, the paintwork is easier to rectify than repairing rust issues. And most of these X300s have lots of rust, especially on the rear arches, sills and front wings. Of all the Jags I have had, this is the cleanest in terms of corrosion - the body is remarkably rot free.
The interior of this car is in good order, with no rips or tears. There's some wear to the driver's seat bolster. Everything is tight and solid. The seats are comfortable, and the front ones adjust electrically. There is an abundance of wood and leather everywhere, as well as some nice chrome touches. The LCD clock does not work (show me one that does!). Headlining is held up by pins, as these always sag.
Grab a bargain - prices of decent X300s are steadily increasing, and long-gone are the days where you could pick up examples with a full MOT for under a grand. A lot of these are being purchased and shipped out on to the continent, as they are highly regarded over there and parts are expensive and rare
