This beauty has come to roost in my shop to overwinter. As is, it is a collection of good intentions gone wrong travelling in close formation. The goal is to harmonise the parts as best possible and drive it out when the snow melts.   |

If you look at the engine bay pic, there are 6 fatal flaws to the project that need to be overcome and would have dictated an entirely different path for this build.
Anyone care to take a guess? Since you cant see then, I will toss out power steering and the AOD gearbox.

The otherwise beautiful flathead engine is the poison pill in this recipe. The problem is that the designer picked a classic engine and then decided that he also wanted all the amenities of a new car.
The engine is saddled with EFI that will run the engine but not the AOD;: No rational way to connect a TV cable to the AOD and getting it wrong will kill the AOD
The engine will not produce enough vacuum ( volume wise) to keep the brake booster working
The AOD with the big overdrive will make the low vacuum thing even worse going to need a vacuum pump of some sort
They chose to have AC and power steering; both energy consuming devices that wont look good stuck on the engine, add the vacuum pump and its starting to look busy on the front end.
There are some really nice parts on this truck, just that they were not meant to play well together.

Does it have a lumpy cam? That's usually the only reason for a flathead to have poor vacuum draw, particularly a long stroke one like that.

Not that it does not produce vacuum, it is more matter of a flathead does not have a lot of plenum volume to store vacuum.

Plenum volume is irrelevant, the servo cannister stores vacuum (one way check valve), the manifold generates it. Some very small engines have servos attached.
Swap the aod for an aode and use a Baumann controller?
Electric power steering?
Better yet put a modern small block in and sell the flatty to someone who will appreciate it and use it in a traditional rod.

Been a lot of fun so far.
The EFI went in the garbage, wont work with the Ford AOD gearbox
The rear axle went in the garbage. Too much wrong with the diff, the housing was bent and the axles were wrong lenght.
ALL the fancy new wiring had to come out. Just scary
The vacuum pump is in the scrap heap
The back frame crossmember fell out when we tugged on the trailer hitch.Seriously.
The (new) fuel tank weeps fuel and does not bolt in place
Front suspension is assembled incorrectly
Hopefully getting close to the end of the WTF list. A LOT of time has been spent just investigating what is here and if it can stay and play long term.

Have not been doing a lot of posting on progress because most of the work has been re-doing the previous effort. At the end of the day it looks the same, but now things work.
The truck now stops, steers and rolls and is wired as far a possible until the front tin goes on. That is currently out to the bodyshop.
So, with no excuse left, we did this thing,
Compression was good
Oil pressure was good
Vacuum was good
No bad noises from inside.
Needs mufflers!

Electric power steering it is. IN the form of a Electric power steering pump from a Volvo. The truck already had a power rack, so it did not make much sense to do the steering column electric motor assist version. Plus, in a truck cabin there is no place to hide the motor on column ( if you care). The pump hides away low in the bay and should be inconspicuous despite the hideous bile green color. Easy enough to wire in with a keyed 12 volt signal to activate the always-hot pump.  The original design called for using this rather complex bracket to drive a vacuum pump, power steering pump and AC compressor. While I will give points for bracket creativity, I do not see one V belt driving three acessories. Maybe if it were serpentine. With the power steering pump moved and the vauum pump deemed non-essential, the AC might be able to live on, but I am not a fan.  I like the unobstructed view of the flathead engine. Note that the throttle body fuel injection has gone on to live in the bin, being replaced by a two barrel carb. The TV on the AOD is actuated by a simple rod link that suits the vehicle.  |

This is a very interesting project! It's fun to see where someone else ran out of ideas and or talent because then we get to solve things that were preventing it from being finished. Super cool. Nice looking stuff too. And... Them there's some 'Merican accents ya got.  |

Buttoned up the interior last night. A word to the wise if you are into old trucks: LMC's interior parts are junk. Both the carpet that only had to cover a flat floor and the panels to cover the rear of the cab were virtually useless. There was close to $1000 Cnd in those two parts by the time they arrived. Glad we went with the tan color scheme rather than the original black carpet. It would have been way to dark inside the cab  The good news is that two wrongs did make a right in this case. Since the piece of carpet that was meant to go under the seat did not fit the space under the seat, and the carboard panels that cover the rear of the cab were hideous, it was decided to make the best of a bad situation. The carpet on the back panel ties in the seat color to the cab and nobody is the wiser that there is no carpet under the seat because the skirt goes to the floor.  At a standstill now until the rest of the body panels arrive from paint. Outside of my control and with a new province-wide Covid lockdown not sure when that will happen. The truck could be driven around the block the way it sits, but I think it would be a bit conspicuous to the constabulary. |

Wheels painted and the monster tires are on the truck In theory, I could drop it on the ground and go for a drive Shame about snow and salt on the ground Will focus on getting the tailgate on and the chain latch system working. Doors and bonet will stay off until the end because they are just in the way in every way.   |

Silly us. We thought we were out of the woods when the engine fired up and there was no real issue. But then I noticed a small coolant leak at the back of the DS head and Pandoras box was once again pleading for attention. This truck has a Ford Flathead and an AOD gearbox. Not only are they a horrible choice of themselves and for what the the owner wants to do with this truck, but I had no involvement with sourcing or rebuilding either device. I have zero experience with Flatheads and I loath AOD gearboxes, but here we go. Time to deal with it. The head comes off easy enough since the valves are in the block. But then you have to take out 24 studs that are sealed into the block cause each one goes into a water jacket. And of course, this all went down AFTER the front bodywork was installed, so you literally have to lie on top of the front fenders to get at the engine. With the head off, a few things to note: Whoever surfaced the head did it with a lawnmower or a scythe; the groves are highlighted by a quick sandpaper pass on a level surface. The good news is they are not too warped, but off for a resurface at a real machine shop. My guess is this is how they came from China. Easy enough to see where the water was making its way out of the heads. Both sides showed moisture migration in the gasket surface. Last thing to notice is the color of the coolant; it is very rusty and actually a little viscous. The new coolant that I had poured in and shortly after drained for this work was brown. Once we get this sorted, can't wait to see what adventures the AOD is going to present. ![]() ![]()  |

With the head gaskets sorted and the engine running once again, managed to get some more of the body assembled. The PS door is on and closing reasonably well once the too thick door seals were dealt with. Why is it that door seals that are too large seem to be a universal thing with classic car parts supplies?  The interior is quite nice if a bit too black and dark for my taste. The drink holder came out quite nice and fits well in the limited space.  Best of all, the remaining parts are the few that you see scattered on the tailgate; mostly trim for the DS door and the bonnet that wont go on until the drivetrain is verified to be working.  |
