Anyone got a PASSENGER side lower trailing arm to sell? Or know where a new one can be procured?? Seems we have a problem Houston. Some Brain Surgeon welded the bush in on the leading end. Welded both sides. PM please if you do. At least they didn't weld it all the way around. Just think of it as a good chance to practice your surgical grinding techniques... The other side is much worse and longer welds. Hence me rather just tossing that one and buying a replacement if I can find one. I would think its a two hour job to try get the welds out carefully and then you have a compromised sleeve. Would it all work as well as ot should after all that effort??

Don’t panic Captain Mainwaring!
Chances are it’s recoverable as Nick suggests.
Quite possibly, the polybush will fit better than the steel one did.

What are you going to use, a mouse powered Dremel? At least it's the arm which you can easily fit in the vice, and not the axle which would be a bit more problematic. Knock the tops of the welds flat with a grinding disc, or 40grit soft disc. Dig the welds out of the bush with a pointed burr in a die grinder. Pull the bush with the tools we discussed previously. If you're really paranoid about gouges in the sleeve, weld them up and finish with a flap wheel.

So a load of these died yesterday, 4 in fact. Finishing the top and drivers half of the chassis, followed by the whole of the underside. Happy to say, two coats of primer/paint and red oxide plus that bloody underseal is all gone, leaving surprisingly unblemished steel under it all. Then I had to carefully flip the chassis, its not light, and it’s awkward. So did it in a weird, but successful way. Eventually 7 hours later……… I was truly knackered at this point. The NVH gets to you. Cleaned up and ready for primer I then fetched the Mx5 Canary back in and got it onto the ramps, want to take a look today at what part of the exhaust is missing, knowing the catalytic converter was removed. David the lodger sneaks around the garden smoking, and took a nippet of a clip as I got it to the top. I want a sports exhaust on it anyway, and saw a piece of one for £30.-00 on FB Marketplace yesterday. May be worth having. Remember this….? Bodgers should have thumbs removed. Welded up bush. Repairing it would be more expensive in time and effort, plus swearing than replacing in this case. Thankfully westbay found me a replacement pair on Ebay, seller was happy to do a Buy it Now for £32.00 delivered. After a cleanup and rebushing, we should be good to go. Today it is chassis primer one side, then flip it over and do the other side.

rallyedesign sell them in various poundage rate at standard -1,-2” lengths
so standard rate should be fine for the light kit car

Good progress.
The manky, horrible paint has done a reasonable job of protecting it then, considering it was applied best part of thirty years ago. 👍👍

Nice work mate, It's really coming on well now, not long before you have a fully rolling chassis, Nigel

What about replacing the rear shock absorbers with shorter? Current ones are 16” in the rear pushed down Fronts not removed seem to be 15” long. Not sure about front spring length. Opinions? Advice.

Really well protected.

Meet George. Presumed to be a wild, feral stray……. He has hung around my place for a few weeks. Turns out he is a former indoors cat belonging to the new tenants two houses down from me. He allowed Sally to touch him last week Wednesday. Then I tried on Friday to get close to him and made contact. He is a pot head…… loves catnip. So this morning when I was checking out the underside of the MX5 on the ramps, there he was. Crusty underside, missing the catalytic converter, do I replace it with a random piece of pipe or a small resonator box? More crustiness. So I fetched him some catnip and he went mad for it on the rear of the car. After bootfair, breakfast, forum write ups and check ins, I went to check the underside of the car, followed by getting the tin of primer mixed up. Painted every nook and cranny of the underside. Pretty pleased with that. Then went and had a coffee and checked the internet. Followed by fetching Mickey to help me flip it over and painting the top of the chassis. Once done, I stood back and just grinned. George was not too bothered, but at least he checked up on me. It has taken a lot of time and effort to get this thing this far. Loads more to do, but happy with it all so far. Once again, thank you to all those who contribute in any way they choose, be it text, phone call, PM, comments or gifted parts to fit, or specialist tools like the Void Bush tool sent to me in the mail by a random stranger. Life is good.

Amazing how much a proper clean up and a uniform coat of paint makes something look And thats a gorgeous fluff ball of a cat you appear to have adopted Fred, my resident ginger fluff ball also loves a bit of catnip! But isn't even remotely interested in the laser pointer

But isn't even remotely interested in the laser pointer Yes, I have many times in my life lost a good deal of time on just cleaning and recommissioning stuff. When others see scrap, often it hides a jewel. Not so sure about the hours I already have in this build, because we have not yet started to build…….. Regarding George, he obviously has a home at no7 but seems to have decided to incorporate my garden in his fiefdom. I do not mind any animals moving in of their own volition and get the benefit of the attention they return. George is another who seems quite content just watching from a distance till the catnip comes out. Video uploading for you.

Ref . the exhaust - "...do I replace it with a random piece of pipe or a small resonator box? ... " A piece of pipe is the cheapest, if it's too noisey then go resonator box ...
