my tupence worth on the front bumper / number plate ideas leave the number plate central as per pic then add something similar to the VW Golf Country rear bumper protectors but mount vertically on your bumper leaving out the checker plate and use a type of mesh or a rocket logo similar to the inset panel on my bike I know there is quite a bit of work in my idea but it could be done after you have it running, legal and on the road. It could be a nice finishing touch or not as the case maybe, if projects are ever finished. either way I am looking forward to seeing this one finished

What about modifying the bumper so it's a little upswept at the ends? Something like they do on Defenders? That would hide the suspension a little.

Central, under the bumper, set back in line with the rear face of the box section bumper. Starting to warm to this idea. Wonder of Black and White or Silver and Black plates on a Q-plate car are permitted. Not quite sure why you want to 'hide' the suspension, with the bumper bar in place the eye isn't immediately drawn to it (all black components), unless you mention it ! Ref. your "garage / workshop" area, having been lucky enough to see it in person it's an area to be envious of, You had clearly put a lot of thought and work into it and can now reap the rewards, Nigel Thanks Nigel. That build and modification of the walls, making the Paul Y annex and the way it was planned and laid out was the culmination of 8 years planning and patiently waiting. It really is a nice place to work, and since adding the strip lights to the one side of the carport (because thats where to build is happening) I am considering adding a similar amount down the other side, powered independently. It will be like looking at the sun.

And may go try it out in CAD later this week if I get a chance. Dropping the centre an inch or two, and kicking the ends up an inch or so may change the whole look too. All of it is about visually lowering it further than it is so far. Illusions work sometimes.

Making the drivers seat main support as a copy of the wooden one I had done. Cut steel. Measure, drill, fit up, flapwheel and prep. Paint up. Trial fit to seat. Bolt to body. Result was a very adjustable seat. nickwheeler hopefully this will mean getting the steering column set up just right. Mounted and set right back. And forward all the way. Followed by a nice sunrise today to start my year back at work. Next job, mount and fix the passenger seat, followed by mocking up the new roll bar. .

Sorting the steering column/pedal/scuttle/windscreen is the last big job/fabrication and would mean you can do things like place the wiring and electrics, mock up the dash, finish the brakes and think about getting the engine to run

You are absolutely right. Day job is a bit pressured and active this week, but looking forward to further fabrication.

Because the BFH negated the need to use those special drill bit, I decided to see if they would refund or credit me. Any option was acceptable to the shop, so I traded them for some shiny stuff that will get used. From M12 downward in size. I worked in hospital today, so after work a few hours spent getting the passenger seat lined up and bolted dowm. Followed by another little job.

Being back at work means my days run effectively from 07.00 to 17.30 again. So it leaves weekends to fit Sally who works at least every second Sunday and other important housekeeping jobs into. So the only way to get on is to start playing after work and dinner on days/eveningsmwhen Sally does not stop here for dinner and a snooze on the couch. Night Shift working will keep things moving forward slowly. Last night I went to the garage just after 5.00pm and closed by 8.30pm It included a 30 minute chat and show around to my new lodger who may be here for a month or three, not sure yet. The job I wanted to get done was to drill the mounting holes on the floor and get the height and position of the passenger seat right. I also adjusted the drivers seat with an added 5mm shim. Due to the lay out of the seat mounts, the legs all differ. Eventually giving me this result, all the fitting, and adjusting took a while. Drivers seat is fully adjustable, which is why I was looking for a spare passenger seat all the time. Passenger seat is fitted in a fixed position. And enough space to fit a new roll bar, it will lean back as planned, and new mounting points will be welded to the chassis as nickwheeler had suggested for the move. I also started to mock up the new roll bar that will be canted back, and then bend in at shoulder height. A horizontal bar for safety harness mounting at shoulder height gets added, and a pair of diagonal rearward supports anchored to the chassis in the rear corners. So there you go. Nightshift is a real thing now.

looking good, I did something very similar for the elan+2 20 odd years ago, RV fabrications in Witham bent the tubes to match the patterns for me and I tacked them together in situ, then removed it and fully welded it.

So……. That license plate placement chestnut. Trying to somehow camouflage the front suspension a bit. Placement options. Straight cover of the view Or offset below…. Not my choice. Standard, conservative look. Maybe just tucked under, canted rearward. Looking at it again………. Makes me wonder. While working down at the garage, I went up to the house to sort selling the small fridge. Walking back, I saw this pic and realised my privilege, thankful that I built the carport last year, and also previous planning and changes previously set up for the future, which is now, what I am missing is actually……… Gas station forecourt boards hanging down from the top of the carport roof. Need to give this a bit of thought I think. Imagine a 450mm to 750mm high frontal facade with some gas station advertising. The car is looking great Grizz. Amazing progress! I don't tend to comment unless I've got something worthwhile to put forward. So here are my thoughts for what they are worth regarding the number plate placement. I don't think the Cortina suspension is too bad looking and there are many kit cars and hotrods around showing it much more visibly. Aesthetically, I think the number plate looks best central and helps hides the brackets under the bumper. But my more controversial suggestion is to place it to the side as in the second photograph, hiding the suspension then, on the opposite side, fit an oil cooler of similar propotions to the number plate Bosozoku style with the pipes exiting through the bottom of the vertical grille slots. It will depend very much on the final style of the car but, if you're going for a fun vehicle that isn't to be taken too seriously, it could be made to work! Especially if you are adding a rear spoiler and went for a deeper possibly aero front bumper. There, I've said my bit - I'm ready to be shot down!

Morning mate, I think that is well within my ability if I cannot get the right pipe and then go to my mate Kevins and use the bender he has there. Needs 6 bends, and the rear supports will be quite low mounted.

Morning Thom, Well……… I really like that idea., after all, it is a Japanese car, under the skin, kinda, if you use your imagination. However, I really like that idea. Had not considered it till now. Of course that means I now need to find a fake oil cooler of sufficient dimensions to try there, and some old hydraulic pipes. I still hve another sucker punch idea in mind, but your idea falls squarely in the “Tongue firmly in cheek” original remit and vision. Thanks for posting it up here. Photoshoppers?

One more thought on the roll bar design. I am thinking that the rearward supports should be quite low, at the same shoulder level as the safety harness mounting points, and tucking into the rear corners, thus leaving a bit of space for beers and BBQ in the rear. Still need to create some kind of cover and mounting point for the battery in there too, as the MX5 wiring loom and positioning was in the trunk/boot. Another crazy thought was to use box section, repeatedly pie cut and shaped to form the bends needed and welding all the cuts, shaping with flap wheel and painting up. Crazy yes, a load of work, yes…… BUT.
