The Covid lockdown period saw the Cannonball Run record go a few times with people taking advantage of the quiet roads. There are still possibly more to come out from that period as people sit on video evidence until they can't be prosecuted. However it seems the gold rush for times is not over as the record has fallen again, this time to 25 hours and 39 minutes. Interview here: drivetribe.com/p/the-cannonball-record-has-been-R6_v_jZrQR6Km9y2pNV7Kg?iid=B65Aku5xTe64pKbLk8mu3AVinwiki as ever have the story One of the things not mentioned in the article is the first sub 26 minute time set recently by a solo dude in a rented Mustang (modified to have more fuel capacity, then returned to stock to return to the renting place!) Now that and the new record as a fake cop car are proper Cannonball madness.

yeah really enjoyed that piece, was informative. A NC500 run would be fun, next to no cops either, deer and campervans would be the problem.

A "Coast to Coast" would be good in this country - it's the North West to North East of England

Much average speed cameras in the area? Guess you could head off the normal routes to dodge them.

Somebody I know did Hull-Liverpool M62 in 1hr 13 minutes one night in lock down and then Leeds - A1/M25 South Mimms and back in 3hr 18 minutes. Didn't record it obviously as they're not thick but it'd take a lot of beating now the roads are back to normal.

Sat on your backside for 26 hours in a climate controlled car. IIRC real men used to do a moped event from Solway-on-Bowness to Wallsend over the North Pennines along the A69. An undulating 77.7 miles and rising from sea level to 720 feet. Some people took two days on Moblyettes. Much pedalling and pushing on the steeper parts. I really fancy doing that but in good weather as I'm a bit old now

I thought it was a a great idea, and was coincidentally my house to my in-laws' holiday house. My wife said it sounded like a jolly...

How about in a lockdown-free summer we instigate a 'Hannibal Run' over the Alps on mopeds from Lyon to Milan and then do it in reverse in Piaggio Ape's? SWMBO wants an Ape and I could sell this scenario to her in a microsecond.

I love everything Cannonball after getting hooked on the films when I was younger. My 2 prized possessions are a crossed out 55mph sign signed by Ed Bolian and a copy of Cannonball! The book written by Brock Yates signed by the man himself, “to a great driver, Brock Yates” It’s sad in a way that these times will probably never be beaten in normal circumstances.

Just watched last weeks top gear with a tribute to Sir Sterling Moss god bless him, In 1955 he won the Mille Miglia by 30 mins with a time of 10 hrs 7 mins ....1000 miles on 1950's Italian roads open top car and very minimal course notes. I reckon thats proper motoring on some dodgy roads flat out for 10 hrs taking nothing away from modern records as obviously Sterling had no police to worry about but it amazed me.

How about around the U.K. coastline 4700 miles I think 22 days is the fastest I have seen online by a chap in a Morgan. That’s easily beaten, reckon it could be halved with ease
