I keep wondering about using ‘corn head grease’ also known as one shot swivel grease in LR circles on the leaky steering box for the same reason. It’s designed to go stiff until subjected to some shear forces (oo-er) so stay in places where the seals have gone but still lubricate when things start moving. As you say any lubrication is a bonus ! Nice progress on some of the fiddly stuff. James

Hardly any has leaked out and it lubricates much better than dried out grease.

No it's wierd stuff especially designed for land rover swivels, it's like a mixture of grease and oil. It used to be quite cheap in plastic pouches.

Look for John Deere Corn head grease or Land Rove ‘one shot’ swivel grease, even the britpart stuff should work. James

is that the same as cv joint grease ? It's thixotropic. Like ketchup or cornflour mixed with water. Don't put ketchup in your steering box, though. It's designed to not leak out past crappy old seals and not get pushed aside like thicker grease does. Grease mixed with oil will dry out and the grease stops falling back into place onto the gear teeth. Corn Head grease has good "flop", once it's been pushed out of the way gravity pulls it back down to where it came from. Makes it ideal for worm/wheel gearboxes. Phil

Thanks chap , thats some good info on another point , does anyone have experience with having no door handles , and using a central locking system to open the doors ? Not sure about legalities, but for MOT there has to be a physical means of opening the doors from the outside. Whether a button or handle. But not a remote fob

If it's under the sill it'll get covered in filth every time you drive the car. That will become annoying very quickly.

Base of the door mirror was the TVR solution but not sure if this would work for proper wing mirrors ! Lots of rubber dimple buttons for keyless systems about now, any details on the wing you could use to disguise something ? Nice little badge or something? James

my main concern was , would a central locking solenoid have the ooomph to make the catch rotate ,and open the door ?

The central locking solenoid only releases the lock not the door catch ...

You will need something to ‘pop’ the door open when the catch is released. There are a number of solutions used in the hot rod world, but sure you will come up with a nice si,ple, solution. P.

They did door poppers on WD when Edd China fitted them to some sort of hot rod thing when they did those pointless US based episodes of no interest to the UK. Season 12 Episode 8 DeSoto Firedome This sort of thing comes in 2 or 4 door versions i believe

I seem to remember they used to use the solenoids from pre-engaged starters as door poppers, you must have some of them stashed away.

Morning long time reader thought I would join in the chat. I have done a few cars with no door handles, what you have to remember is that you no longer lock the car. I have always used starter solenoids welded to a mount and use this to operate the latch. For the mot I always left the window open so the door can be opened using the interior handle never had a problem. The usual question is what happends with a flat battery and usualy you have enough power for the solenoid to click which is all you need, worse case senario jack it up and back feed the starter.

Not allowed to open the door from outside the vehicle with interior handles for the past however years Unless its like a series 1 Land Rover which has nothing outside, but a hole in the door panel to reach in to the handle I think its more of a safety requirement than anything else really 🤔
