Hey dudes and dudettes, I saw this vehicle for sale on Facebook, and after some discussions with the owner, decided to buy it. Without seeing it up close, or test-driving it or any of the sensible things people do before handing over money for a car. The seller has links to some friends of mine in Cornwall, so that was reassuring. A bit. So, last Friday, after arranging insurance through Brentacre (helpful enthusiastic people), I took a train to London, an underground to Paddington, and another fast train to Exeter. My friends picked up the Deliboy and drove it to meet me, which was nice. It then took me only 5 hours to slowly drive it home. The exhaust appeared to be blowing, and the noise reverberated around the tin box. The tramlining was appalling, so I had to concentrate and keep both hands on the wheel at all times as it wandered around on the M5. I checked the oil level before driving, and it was very low, so I topped up at a service station and drove slowly so I could maintain my hearing and keep any oil consumption to a minimum. Not a great start. The previous owner had lowered the front suspension (on torsion bars, so only turning a nut each side), but not adjusted anything else. This meant that the alignment was way out, with too much camber and toe. I checked the tyre pressures the day after returning home, and the nearside front had 17psi. That also didn't help. My first job was to put some air in the tyres, then remove the stickers which were applied in the UK (advertising a garage business in Devon). I modified the telephone numbers on the sides and rear so they would look more like Japanese numbers, and less like a UK mobile. The following day, I returned the front suspension to stock height. It now drives pretty well, although it's still very loud because someone somewhere removed the only silencer from the exhaust system. So, what does it look like now? The pink fluffy accessories were added by my friends who picked it up for me. Jokes on them, though, as I'm not easily embarrassed. That's all for tonight. I'll be back with more stories soon. Ciao!

I searched using the original telephone number which was still on it when it was imported, and cross-referenced the address on the side (well, the 1-35 part, anyway). It's in Gifu Prefecture, just north of the city of Nagoya. It's a pity it was closed when the Google car drove past. Try Google Streetview: Liquor Shop Ogawa

It was imported to the UK in 2015 by an importer based in Plymouth (hence it probably landed in Bristol). It was used by them for promotional purposes, before being passed on to a garage business who also used it to promote their business, and as a shop truck (hence the UK mobile number and the vinyl which I've peeled off the bonnet).
The next owner (as far as I can tell) was a dealer in unusual cars, who then gave it to the guy I bought it off as payment for the labour part of the installation of an air ride system. As mentioned in the other Deliboy thread on here, he's converting an ex-US Postal Grumman LLV with an air-ride system and a Mercedes OM606 engine to use as his new shop truck, so he didn't need the Deliboy for long. Plus, he's just bought a sweet Ford Torino GT to cruise around in.

I love this truck (my wife hates this thing & my mates know I'm a bit weird lol), it's been on my radar since it was very first for sale. I also tracked down the liquor store and was a bit disapointed it didnt look as interesting as the truck.

Gotta love the commercial spec seats in these things. Good one for the driver and a terrible one for the occasional passenger. Pi55ed penguin graphic is pretty cool too.

... Pi55ed penguin graphic is pretty cool too. Is it? I was wondering what these depressive looking penguins would promote? Okay, alcohol might be their problem. But nice car all the way!

I am soooo pleased for you to have gone and bought it.
Side sliding door, mirrors and position pole/post out front are cool, as is the rear door split.
Sounds like most of the fixes needed are simple ones.
Looking forward to random pics of it at petrol stations, in shopping centres and shady country lanes.
Also for a set of pics head to head and side by side with something UK based that can give a better idea of its actual size.

So, Flingstam, what's the story behind the penguins? Well, Flingstam, I'm glad you've asked. Buckle up, this is going to get wild. Back in the 1980's, The Papipu penguins were invented by an advertising company to promote Suntory Beer. Hence the Penguin on the passenger side in a baseball outfit is also drinking. Cute cartoon characters In Japan are a universal feature, and not restricted to children's goods. Of course, there was also a large range of merchandise: The penguins appeared in print adverts and Television. So far, so good. At some point, someone in Suntory thought it would be a good idea to give these penguins a back story. They commissioned a feature-length film. The penguins' names are Mike and Jill. Not particularly Japanese names. Jill is an aspiring singer, whereas Mike is... a Vietnam war veteran and poetry lover who suffers from PTSD... Wait, what? WHAT??? You don't have to believe me, you can watch the whole film on Youtube (subtitles are available): The film starts in Vietnam, where Mike and his fellow penguins-in-arms are involved in horrendous firefights, witness war crimes and are either injured or killed. And they're all cartoon penguins. Upon returning home Mike seeks out a new life, but is haunted by nightmares from his military experience. It's deep and profound, and, I think I might have mentioned this, every character is a cute cartoon penguin... Read more about it on Den of Geek here: Den Of GeekSo, yes, it does kind of make sense that an off-licence delivery van would have cartoon penguins on the side, but probably only in Japan.

Cheers Grizz, I do tend to get a bit carried away with the details. I did consider putting it in the builds section, but as I'm not planning to change the powertrain, suspension, paint, interior, etc. it made more sense to bung it in here and list any small modifications I make as I go along. As well as list the thing which go wrong along with what I'm doing about them.

I have to ask, what have your neighbors said? 😂 It's been received with a mixture of amusement and bewilderment. They're used to my multiple weird and wonderful cars, so this is a natural progression.

Yes, of course it's a 275 NART Spyder...
