Not a nice experience but at least you are ok - From experience I would say that will be considered a write off - would you be happy with that decision providing the insurance settlement is in line with your valuation of the car or would you rather retain the salvage rights on the car - let them pay you out and then rebuild it - if its the latter do not under any circumstances allow the insurance company to remove the vehicle to a place of safe / free storage - if you do your chances are that you will never see it again If it is written off due to fire damage it can no longer be sold back to you or go back on the road. I did a vehicle examination course at work a while ago and was told that some of the chemicals released in a car fire are pretty horrible and can be carcinogenic. Wear gloves, a quality face mask and goggles if you need to touch anything on it. If that's the case it completely contradicts any car that gets insurance repaired due to fire damage or is the insurance company attempting to police health & safety matters and making a statement that only a 'Insurance Authorised Repairer' knows what he is doing in repairing a fire damaged vehicle and a experienced private individual vehicle owner / restorer cant be trusted with repairing a fire damaged vehicle and the associated health & safety implications - It's like stating that you cant change your own vehicle oil anymore because of the carcinogenic risks that it carries - Somethings never change with insurance companies and the same old rule still applies ' Lets just make it up has we go along and then sugar coat it to make sure no one else understands'

I saw this on Twitter and it's gutting to see myself, so I can't imagine how you feel. I hope that they pay out properly and you can get something else that will be just as good

Sad sight.....,
As has already been said, unless you just want the thing gone, DO NOT let them take it away, as if you do, you will never see any part of it again. Get it put safely under cover and have them come to it for inspection. If being kept away from home make sure that those where it is being kept know that it is not to be moved without your express permission.
Looks like the shell and much of the running gear could be saved.

Think payment in lieu of repair is still a thing - might be worth asking for that. Glad you are ok, but pants outcome anyway. James

What a horrible thing to happen, I really feel for you. I had a similar disaster 7 years ago when my Dolomite went up in flames. I had it on a normal insurance policy which meant that initially it was very hit and miss as to whether I could keep the car to either repair or break. It took some fighting but when the assessor eventually came to view it things got easier and I ended up being able to buy the car back for a token sum without it leaving the property. It was technically a CAT C but it never showed up as such so I guess the insurer got lazy with the paperwork. Not accounting for time the payout more than covered the repairs. All the details are here if it is of any help: forum.retro-rides.org/thread/134832/1977-truimph-dolomite-1850hl-brownLet me know / PM me if I can help at all. James

This is awful to see. I can't really offer anything other than my sympathies. Having a car catch fire is a really horrible experience that I don't want to repeat. I hope you get it sorted out with the insurance.

I don’t post often, but I am truly sad to see your car like this. At least you’re ok and hopefully you will be adequately paid out by your insurance.

Have been speaking to the insurance company. So far they sound fairly open and flexible. They are adamant that its not company policy to dispose of cars before a settlement is agreed (I guess legally its not theirs anyway). It IS in their "care" which is a risk but it got dragged off too quickly for my fuddled brain to realise this was not the best plan, however they have stated they will be back in touch tomorrow after their engineers report. I assume that the most likely outcomes are either Cat B - in which case I can strip it for spares and find a replacement shell in France or S - structural issues but repairable in which case I should be able to reclaim it. We will see. Insurance companies seem good at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory but it looks hopeful (wish) for some resolution that means eventual rebuild.

If does turn out to be Cat B only an Authorised Treatment Facility will allowed to to break / process the vehicle - in order to become a ATF you have to comply with several requirements and be registered / hold licences that are issued by the Environment Agency & Local Authorities - there is some information about this on the Copart website - link below - Copart do have a system where they can bid on your behalf for a vehicle - should you win the auction / acquire the vehicle then you go to their yard & strip the vehicle of the parts required but the shell of the vehicle must remain on their site and they must dispose / crush the shell once its stripped or you have taken what you require from the vehicle - Now its all achievable providing the car ends up at Copart - but there are numerous ATF facilities up & down the country that purchase written off / salvage vehicles from the insurance companies - not just Copart and not all are willing to sell a complete vehicle for stripping in their own yard - it would wise to retain strong communication with the insurers if it does go down the cat B route has to where the vehicle ends up - lets just hope that that you can retain salvage / purchase back what you need from the car www.copart.co.uk/Content/UK/EN/Support/Services/Category-B-Vehicles?intcmp=web_uk_howtobuy_catbservices

I would have thought the most likely options would be C, S or N? With S the most likely or maybe N as none of the fire damaged parts count in the new list of structural parts.

I got my car as Cat B and it seemed to hinge on where i lived and the google street view showing i had an enclosed yard to put it as they didnt want sharp edges etc being an issue with the public. I'm not registered as anything.
My car had been dragged off the accident scene to storage and suffered more damage there from very careless handling because they just assumed it was scrap and didnt care i guess, so no not advisable to let it out of your sight, but it was delivered back to me next day FOC.
