the car just turn and turns and turns over it eventually starts to bubble and start but you have to keep the starter engaged then it eventually goes. when its running it fine 100%, idles fine no loss of power but it just hates starting! its running sparkrite electronic ignition so no points, all the connections are clean and good. so over to you, ant ideas?

Oohh, tricky one, how are the plugs and HT leads, and how old are they? As the leads get older they become stiffer and their resistance goes up, that could be stopping the spark getting there until the leads warm up? If my high school physics teacher was to be believed, as something gets hotter it's resistance goes down, so if it has a lot of resistance, but then the heat of it trying to send a spark down the lead heats it up, so it gets hotter and the resistance goes down, and the spark is able to get to the end of the lead and into the plug. In short are your HT leads knackered, or have I just confused myself for nothing? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Actually yes it's probably just flooding! ;D ;D

Sounds fuel related to me. Could be a knackered fuel pump, fuel running back to the tank, auto choke up the swanee, etc etc. Is it only when the engines cold or every time you try and start it?

its the same hot or cold. my mate said it could be a weak fuel pump. the car has not got auto choke, however if you pull the choke out hot or cold the car splutters and dies?? could this be a clue. the carb is w webber 34 ich if that helps?

I guess the only thing you can do is work through it methodicly. Check the fuel pump first and make sure your getting good fuel pressure, check for leaks, check all your pipe work and make sure you've not got a vacuum pipe off anywhere( i had this problem on a sierra once, little vac pipe to the air filter and the thing wouldnt run at all without it). Check the carb for blocked jets, split diaphragms etc. When your cranking the engine is there a strong smell of fuel? if so then it's flooding. If not then i'd be tempted to go for the fuel pump or a blocked jet in the carb. Hope this is some help, although knowing my track record i'm probably miles off. If it was my car I'd say it was time for a bigger engine ;D ;D ;D

I used to have this problem with my old Escort, which chucked a paddy every time it was cold or damp. Liberal application of Holts "Wet Start" seemed to do the trick.

Fixed it!! it turns out destressingly the dizzy had slipped slightly retarding the timing so it was firing over TDC. advanced it a bit and it starts first pop and even goes a bit better. it must have been slipping over the last 1000 or so miles as the prob got worse over the last few weeks and i didnt notice the performance (well for a hampster in a wheel) dropping off. thanks for all your help guys.
