I think you've got to bite the bullet. Get it done properly once and you can enjoy it.
That's the plan for my Cav as well. Full resto but it'll be worth it.
Whereabouts are you based?

I'm liking this build. I don't think i ever saw a 2 door in the wild. I had a mate growing up whose parents had a terracotta coloured mk2 hatch but that was an old car even then.
With regards to the paint, have you thought about having a go yourself? Most of the work required would be strip down and prep. Even doing that much yourself would save a lot of money.

As said the expense in the paint process is the prep if you can get the car prepped yourself it will be a lot cheaper. Just work on a side a time and it will soon get done.
