looking for undercoat cheap & cheerfull you know the stuff that you thin with white spirit, what goes on nice & can be sanded easy? thanks

Its for a truck, don't need to be perfection...... Last thing I'd applying is something that's thinned with white spirt that's for painting garage doors & the like - what are you attempting to achieve ? is it bare metal - alloy - wood - plastic or a combination - are you going over the top existing paint / filler etc - do you just need a base primer or something with a filling density - how are you planning to apply it ? - there are a whole range of primers in the market all with different uses - more info & some pics then I can help & point you in the right direction |

Some time ago I was given a few litres of undercoat it was thinned with white spirit & it was used for general items like garage doors railings etc.It was great, sanded down real easy & could be sprayed brushed etc, it provided a great surface for top coats..... so to make out that any paint thinned with white spirit is curse word is just false. Its a bit like saying all cheap Chinese turbos & con rods are rubbish.

I'm greatfull when people respond to help, but your not accepting what I want to do & are trying to push me into doing some thing else. I too have been doing this kind of thing for a very long time & don't need to be schooled thank you.

You have a problem in the respect of how you read what others write - and rather than jumping the gun with a knee jerk reaction you need to read what I wrote and then understand the context of it - I never stated that the product you were proposing to use was 'curse word' - what I did state is that is the last thing that I would apply - Nor did I suggest that you use a different product until you provided a little more information in what you were attempting to achieve with the product - However has you state you have been doing 'this kind of thing for a very long time' - therefore you already have all the answers and you don't need to waste anyone's time any further - take care |

I'm struggling to think what you could thin with white spirit these days although I admit I haven't tried. You could thin and spray synthetic with petrol in the 80s though! |

You can buy good paint sold on ebay listed as military spec, that can be thinned with white spirit. Tractol paint can be thinned with white spirit also, Ive just sprayed some panels with it using white spirit to thin it.
I think Ive found the undercoat, Ill try some and let people know how it goes.

'Synthetic' is what it's usually called. Its not thinned with white spirit, nothing is thinned with white spirit if youre doing properly but its a cheap single pack that can be brushed or sprayed (if you want do do both ask for it brushable as the binder is different, even brushable can still be thinned to spray (with thinners! 🙂) ) Loads of people sell it under a multitude of brands and names and what not but it's all basically the same thing. Try Jawel Paints.

Pronto paints also do a huge range of it, can be ordered for local pickup through BOC outlets.
I use it loads and it works well, gives a very ‘old timely’ finish like Celly before it’s cut and polished, which for me is a desirable feature.
As slater says it’s formulated slightly differently for spray and brush and they will ask you which you want and it does make a difference.
Buy the proper thinners with it though, it’s actually cheaper per L than buying white spirit.

Depends on ambient temps obviously, but I was spraying it last week and it was touch dry in 15 mins, just a slight tack to it but didn’t leave fingerprints. It was dry enough for me to turn it over to do the other side within half a hour. It’s always leave it 24hrs to dry off before doing anything with any of the parts I’ve painted though. |
