Rightā¦..I am going to try and make my updates a bit more regular if I can. Of course, it all depends on me finding the time to do so. I've said it beforeā¦.and Iāll say it again, one of the things that amazes me here on Retro Rides is the time and effort everyone takes to update their threadsā¦.and especially the folks who update regularly. There's lots of youā¦but one that sticks out ( apart from you grizz š) is the chap building/restoring the Rainbow Popā¦.I think his name is Mark if I remember rightly. How he manages to do all that work in the evenings and then find time to update us all is beyond meā¦.full credit to him is what I say Nowā¦continuing on from the last update where I was drilling holes by the dozen, it was then time to weld some of the pieces back on. Starting with the shackle bush housingsā¦.. Then it was time to permanently weld the inner section of chassis to the outer. Liberal amounts of Bilt Hamber weld through primer was used to aid against future corrosionā¦ Then, in with the channel for the tailgate loom to pass throughā¦. Grind back the welds and tidy it upā¦. Same with the channel for the fuel tank loomā¦. A picture of it all starting to come togetherā¦. Next was the shock absorber mount. I tried to save the original āthickā steel channel that the shock attachment bolt ran though. Butā¦it was a complete waste of time due rot! Againā¦it wasn't a common size, but after a bit of searching I managed to source the correct size of steel tubing from a local supplier. When in position, the tube extends past the chassis wall by a few centimetres. It is then capped off with what I can only describe as a domed support plate. Luckily, I managed to salvage this part from under all of the previous MOT repair plates. Here's the channel / tube in positionā¦.. ā¦.and now with the support plate resting in placeā¦. Once it was all aligned correctly, it was just a simple case of welding it in. That's all for now....more soon. Cheers....Dan. Thank you. Holy Mackerel That is lovely. Following on from my last update ( which might have been missed by most ), the work on the left rear chassis section continues. Next on the āever increasing things to doā list was the leaf spring bump stop plate and the reinforcement plate that sits above it ( arrowed )...... There was no point in trying to unpick the spot welds for the bump stop plate as the rust was so deep in that area that it was going to get cut out anywayā¦..so I just enrolled the help of the trusty plasma cutter and cut it offā¦ā¦ Then a quick clean upā¦.. Cut a piece of 3mm plate to roughly the right shapeā¦ Then weld it in.... Clean up the weld and then put to one side..ā¦. Nowā¦.Iāve looked high and low for pictures I thought I took of the fabrication process of the reinforcement plateā¦but they donāt seem to exist So, made from 3mm plate steel......here's one I made earlierā¦. Then drill a hole for the main centre bolt that holds the rubber bump stop to chassis and two smaller holes for the locator pins on the bump stop plateā¦ Then it was back to the bump stop plate to locate and drill the main centre hole ā¦..and the two locator holesā¦.. Then add the pinsā¦. Jobs a good'unā¦. Then test fit the reinforcement plate to make sure everything lines up..... Then weld it in placeā¦ As I mentioned earlier, the bump stop plate was welded to the reinforcement plate, but I didn't really see why that was necessary. So, it'll be simply held on by the centre bolt that secures the rubber bump stop. Once again, I forgot to take a pictureā¦..but there's a nut welded to the inside of the chassis to bolt the rubber bump stop to etc. That's all for now folksā¦..more soon. Dan

I didnāt realise that Iād knocked it in gear when I lifted the engine cover to service it. Lent in to fire it up afterwards and it fired straight up and trundled off the front of the ramp ( someone had removed the safety bars š) and into the post of our other ramp! I think the owner was less bothered than my boss was š

I think the owner was less bothered than my boss was š Thanks...š. I did something very similar back when I was a young 21 year old working as a mechanic. I had the rear of a Citroen BX DTR Turbo up on a massive trolley jack ( it was originally used for lifting buses ) . The garage I worked at had no ramps or pit, so everything was done off the floor. The rear wheels were off and for what ever reason, I lent through the drivers window and started the car while it was in gear! It took off out of the workshop taking me... and luckily....the jack with it. After what felt like a lifetime of flapping and panicking, I managed to compose myself and turn it off. It wasn't going very fast, but the car, the jack and me ended up halfway across the road!! The boss wasn't best pleased to say the least. No damage was done to the car, but I was slightly battered after being caught between the brick pillar of the garage and the car. It wasn't very funny at the time....but at least I can laugh about it now....plus, it's a great pub story! š That looks super solid! Great resto Thanks....I really appreciate it š

Also owning a BX (as well as the LT) I can relate to that story! I did similar, starting it up in gear, but this was whil the front was up in the air. I'd lowered the suspension so the rear had sunk, then when the job had finished (front brakes) I just leaned in through the window, put the suspension back on high so I could remove my supports, and started the engine. Without putting it in neutral...
Nothing happened to start with, but by the time I realised that the descending front wheels were in fact rotating, they'd contacted the ground and were dragging the BX with it. I managed to chase after it and bring it to a halt with only minor damage to the floorpan, but at least it was only my own car!

Did someone say there was a STORM!!!....... Well....it came and went....and apart from turning two of my fence panels into giant Frisbee's and taking the lean-to roof clean off ( which I am yet to retrieve from next door ), it also left a slight leak in the roof of the pop-up garage covering the truck. Shout if you can see it.....because I'll be dammed if can.... ššš The best I could do to was put a tarp over the cab at least.....even that took 30 minutes and one hell of a lot swearing to achieve in such high winds.... O'well..... just another thing to add to the 'to do' list....

What can I say or add, Johnthesparky said something along the lines of "if people aren't interested in the thread they can skip past it" That, I confess, is what I'd been doing, BIG mistake !! It's just taken 2 days to read through fully, your work (& fabrication skills,) Dan are little short of amazing / brilliant / inspiring etc - I would run out of superlatives, Similarly to yourself I held my Dad in the highest esteem and one of his favourite phrases was "if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing properly" You Sir are most definitely at said properly level, Looking forward to seeing future updates on this (now bookmarked) thread, Thank you for sharing with us, Nigel

In the bigger picture of things, I'd say that we got away with it lightly. It's frustrating that it had to happen when a lot of the lower cab was in bear metal with freshly welded seams that were left unprotected from the day before š....... but, at least our electricity and internet were restored fairly promptly and damage to the house was kept to a minimum, unlike many poor souls around the country.

I'm glad that it's caught your attention and I genuinely appreciate the fact you've taken the time to read through the whole thread. I've said it before....and I'll say it again, the comments, questions, advice and support that comes from the Retro Rides community is literally the fuel I need to keep going with this project. Without the interest and input from other's, there's no way I'd of kept the motivation up. The quote "if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing properly" that you say your Dad would often use, well, it was exactly the same quote my Dad would use. He was an extremely patient man and would never cut corners or try to speed a job up. Everything was done on his own terms.....at his own pace. Which quite frankly was frustrating a lot of the time....but it did earn him a good reputation in the building trade. I certainly do not have the level of patience that dad had, but I like think that I'm some way to having his attention to detail at least. Anyway, thanks again š......and I hope you enjoy the future updates. Dan

Did you try to put the damage to the tent on your home insurance? They might take it. Thom Hi Thom, That was the first thing my other half said. But the thing is, the excess is Ā£350. So it'll be more economical to repair it.....even improve it maybe ( I've already got a plan brewing ). The one thing that I'm now really glad I did back in the summer, was to concentrate both ends into the ground. If I hadn't, then I believe the whole thing would taken off and caused a lot of damage to the truck its self. Dan

Just a small update to get things moving again. Soā¦..my plan to regularly update this thread has well and truly flown out the window! I've been mega busy with all sorts of stuff, like getting my daily drive M.O.T ready, fixing all sorts of things around the house for my mum and of courseā¦..repairing the storm damaged pop-up garage. Which I'm pleased to report is all back up and running. I even managed to add in a few improvements in the way of structural strengthā¦ Anywayā¦.back to the nitty gritty of continuing the months and months of updates I need to wade through. Soā¦.there are 4 jacking point outriggers on these trucks. Two on the front under each side of the cab and two each side roughly half way down the chassis. Iāve already shown how I repaired the front left outrigger in an earlier update. It was now time to concentrate on the left centre chassis outrigger. To my surprise, after sitting it in the de-rusting solution for a week, it was found to be in really good condition and required very little workā¦.which is just as well as I have very few photos of the repairs. All that was required was to level it up with the chassis and repair the lips thatāll join it back to the chassis. These are the few photos I have of that happeningā¦. That was then put to one side for later while I moved onto the gearbox mount. The gearbox mount is one of two centre chassis cross members that sit between the rear of the cab and the two centre chassis jacking point outriggers. They both had to be removed so that the new chassis rails could be fitted. The gearbox mount had suffered very badly on the drivers side where it meets the chassis. In fact, I think there's a photo back along in the thread showing how it was barely attached due to the excessive corrosion. Here's a picture of that corrosionā¦.. Cut it off..... Knock up a new piece.... .......and weld it in..... Then, it was off into the de rusting barrel for a week, along with the other cross member, the spare wheel carrier and a few other bitsā¦ Wellā¦.that's all I have time for at the moment ā¦..Iāll try and update again soonā¦.fingers crossed.
