Well i recently bought this cav off a mate couple weeks ago who's owned if for over 20 years and its spent last 16 years laid up. ive spent the last 2 or so years trying to buy it but i never thought he really would. But then he called my bluff and now i own it. Firstly i think over paid for it but thats anther story. For me to get the car back on the road in the way i'd like to its going to be owing me near the 5k mark with welding work and full repaint. Now would i pay 5k for a cav gsi probably not, but i'd love to have the car on the road again not sure why. Head says sell it heart say fix it. My wife's curse word off because i cant make my mind up! Help

Do you understand why you pestered him for the car originally?
Has the purchase price and cost of work worked out to be more than you expected?

It was more a case of the chase so to speak, and yes the cost to restore it is quite a bit more. I wasent expecting to have to paint the whole car or do so much welding. But its also quite a rare car now and i'l probably never have anther,

Tough question but if it is a car you have wanted for a while, you know some of its history and it is complete and straight then I think you should restore it and create the car you want. Can't remember the last time I saw a GSi on the road so getting rare and chances are you won't easily find another one. I think it looks great and has real presence - plus I think back to the BTCC in the 1990s with these cocking a wheel whilst battling Laguna's and the like π

If the purchase price and cost of work is more than you could sell it on for once restored then I'd say sell it as it is.

If you can do some or all yourself, keep it, there isnt many left. They hit the low value ages ago and are creeping back up as they get rare, how many of these got canned for the engines to go in Novas and Corsas? That being said, pull the skirts off, if the sills don't come off with them it cant be that bad.

[/quote]... and the odd Carina II Apologies π although if I recall correctly 'the car in front was the Toyota' π Back to the Cavalier...I would say that very few cars are worth what is invested in them to restore them back to any reasonable standard. It is a hobby and so doesn't need to think about resale - if you plan to hang onto it once done. It is a whole lot of car for Β£5k. Maybe that is my well practiced 'man maths' π

From someone who was in your exact predicament and made the wrong choice......
Phone the guy and cancel him.
Youβll not find another and when you do it wonβt be the price you paid for this.
Obviously this is all based on your personal circumstances but Iβve regretted selling mine since the minute it drove off
