A fellow Jowett member rescued this a few years ago from a Somerset barn where it had been stored for a long period He has since had welding repairs undertaken - engine rebuild & some fresh paint - it was booked with us for a new headlining - Tim had brought it down to us from Congleton in Cheshire Its now a solid car But the interior lets it down So whilst its in for the headlining can we sort the seats & door cards I will do the headlining & door cards Mrs GN will do the seats So we hope to guide you through the process showing you what is involved - a few top tips and where to purchase the materials required for such works

I also restored the seats of both my Rovers P5 but these were better then those from the Jowett. It has taken me a lot of time but for me this is not a problem but if you have to count the hours, it will be expensive and may come close to a full retrim. Interested in hearing your opinion about this as the front seat repairs do not look well.
Still enjoy your post so thanks for that again.

They look very comfy seats. Javelins have probably the most comfortable seats from the 50's era of family cars that you are ever likely to sit in - I can drive our Javelin all day without issue its so comfortable - I much prefer it over the modern that we run - has you will see once the seats come apart they are sprung bases - just like having a very comfortable sofa fitted to your car

Front seat is out and being disassembled The vast majority of the materials arrived yesterday so Sharon will now crack on with the new covers for seats - the front seat is pain to move about due its weight & bulk of the fixed frame

Missed this thread with the whole working from home thing, which actually has reduced my forum time.
I am always interested in retries as I will do one, one day.
I still have that 54 Chevy Bel Air in Oklahoma marked in my head.
It will be good getting a good running commentary from Sid while you work out in the shop.

This is very timely for me; I was recently gifted a Singer commercial machine (born in 1940!) and want to learm how to use it for automotive stuff. Therefore, anything and everything you and Mrs. GN can share will be appreciated and applied.

PS, that mastic-stuff on the underside of the roof, is that a recent addition or something older? I'm assuming it was applied to minimize noise?

John - Not a problem any questions that you have just ask and we will try to help - Mrs GN is the expert here - well I say expert she has spent decades working with costume design & production for film / theatre / stage / television production and also teaches on the subject at a high level - the materials vary and leather comes very much into it - she also did an upholstery course & qualified several years ago - we both hold a interest in period furniture (arts & crafts period 1880 - 1920) and she always has a furniture project on the go - the car side of it is not far removed in the skills & materials utilised so it comes pretty natural to her - I just have the experience from owning / restoring various classics The mastic on the underside of the roof is factory original - a early form of sound deadening has you state Depending on the interest shown maybe we should start a interior / trimming thread in the technical section to run alongside the very popular 'Body & Paint Thread'

Is that vinyl or leather? For the piping, is Mrs. GN uisng a cord embedded/sewn into the material? If you also be willing to show the size of needle and thread used, I'd appreciate it.

John John - The seat & arm rest facings are done in leather and the side panels & back of the drivers seat are done in a matched vinyl - the piping bead is also done in matched vinyl - this is exactly how the factory produced the seats Piping cord comes in various diameters - but mainly uses 2mm Machine needles - uses a 20 on standard leathers and ups it to a 22 or 24 if its a denser leather or a few layers - uses a 18 on single layer vinyl but ups it to a 20 if she is sewing a few layers together Thread - currently using a 40 thread Monster of a machine though and this is only the medium duty machine she has a heavier duty machine currently in storage Don't let this put you off having a go though you will be amazed at what you can achieve with a vintage 'Singer' Likewise don't hesitate if you need any further info / help / assistance - Chris

Further progress Sees the cover for the rear seat back completed - now waiting on materials for the wadding / packing between the cover & the spring frame - she will now make a start on the cover for the seat base tomorrow

Nice color and a nice job!. Together, you can restore about anything on classic cars. It is nice to have a wife who can do that!

Latest progress from Mrs GN Coverings in the making For the sprung base Original label for the base still attached Base cover made up and the flutes stuffed - just ready now for the foam cutting & shaping between the seat face & the spring base
