sharing this with you guys copied over from another forum. so will be a bit cut and paste, and a bit retelling the story. i think may 2017, I'm standing in work minding my own business when my phone dings in my pocket and ive been tagged in a for sale post on facebook. lads clearing an estate or a house with outbuildings and among some volvos, a fiat 126 and a skoda octavia were two renault 5's. one five door auto, and one three door manual. both campus spec. I'm known to like the french diamond flavour, having owned a couple of mk1 clios including the one 16v i still have just now. i got the sellers mobile number and began a text conversation, i got a select few photos of the car and the main areas of interest, i cant find the lot of them any more but heres a few. on the back of those photos and a breif conversation i arranged a trailer and transfered the guy the mighty sum of £200. collected it that night. got it home, it was about 70 miles away. dumped it in the street covered in trees, leaves, moss, cobwebs, slime, etc. at about 11pm and it sat trapped there for two days with the steering lock on. (i bought it without keys) day three i smashed the ignition barrel out with a lump hammer and got it into the drive way. the neighbours think I'm mental. now, ive never actually liked the R5 all that much. clios have been the ones for me. but when this came up it seemed a bit perfect because sat under the bench in the corner of the shed, for about 4 years at that point ive had a C1j - R5 GTT engine, with a box, stainless exhaust, turbo, carb, clocks, oil cooler etc. id bought this to put in a mk1 clio that i had paneled out to be a van when i was about 18. but it never happened and another clio hadnt come up since so it was going unused. and that was the plan, turbo conversion etc in stock, nice cheap campus shell. would be rude not to right?

the car sat on the drive in that spot for about a year or so. a couple of changes like removing all the campus running gear, engine, subframe, rear axle and replaced with clio 16v stuff i had lying about.
at that point it moved and ill pick up the copy and paste there

It's been just about a year since I last posted up here, and that is because.. nothing had happened. However, I had been making arrangements to store the car inside a unit as I didn't want to put effort into the car for it to get destroyed sitting outside another winter. And ideally I want the valver in the garage at the house. So I arranged with my mate to rent half his lock up and put it there, it means it's inside and dry, and I can go and work on it and hopefully get some good progress made coming into the winter months. About two weeks ago I had a guy coming to collect a kangoo I had sold, I asked the driver if he wanted to make an extra £20 moving the 5 the mile from the house down the road to the unit, and he did, which was a result. Since then I've made a good start I would say, buffed back some of the crud to get a look at it all, rear windows out, boot opened for the first time (I still don't have keys) Wings off, side trims off and various other bits removed. I have rolled the rear arches out to try and accommodate the wider rear axle. I'm going to test fit 185/45r15 and get the bumpers down from the house before welding the arch in place at the back. Buffed off all the nubbins for the side mouldings and welded up all the holes on the doors. And tonight actually finishing off the passenger door with a plate put in at the bottom where it had rotted out. The biggest problem areas are the drivers side rear window and bottom corners of the windscreen. I might end up taking the screen out to repair and paint the car I'm thinking, I wasn't going to bother. I have tracked down both those sections but haven't purchased either as yet. There's other stuff I can do. I also bought a near new silicone cooling hose kit (cheap eBay one) a GTT radiator, some polybushed wishbones, and driveshafts for this last week among some other bits for the valver also. A good bundle of stuff for a fine price, happy days. Cut out the drivers side front bumper mount and replaced as it was nasty. Other side isn't bad. Underneath just needs a wire wheel and underseal for the most part, there was a bit needing cut out but not a lot of work. Having said that I haven't really looked under it properly for a year. Hahah That's about as far as I've come with it so far, been putting a couple of hours in a couple of nights a week though and it feels good to be moving quite quickly. Theres some photos but not loads, be more to come before too long I would say! Cheers,

Bit of progress made over the Christmas holidays. Couple nights and days work done Finished welding up the rear arches now they’ve been rolled out a bit. Ground back and some filler applied. Been going round the car doing bits and pieces, finishing up the doors and quarters. Aside from the rear driver side window, although I do have a repair panel lined up for that. finally tackling the windscreen I had intended to try and get cut outs of another shell for the bottom corners. But coming up with nothing in any decent condition, I decided to cut it out and see what was inside. D37BD062-3450-48D0-9864-1EF76508BBE8.jpeg 633E7D3D-D5F8-4C44-B8F8-2873D2B8650D.jpeg 9C39FD89-0AC2-4C4D-9007-36EA174A69D3.jpeg In the end I had a bash at replicating the shape in metal just to see if I could get anything close. This is the worse side and although I would have liked to need less filler, for my standards I’m happy enough. Needs more shaping work to get it right, it looks a bit better in person rather than the photos. 8F78A4AA-F256-4832-831B-6D706D914AC4.jpeg 5BA9EB72-830C-4254-97BE-8910E4D659E7.jpeg 820207F7-5371-4FD7-9605-7CD2B13B2255.jpeg A043B6CF-75C5-4CCD-8FE1-4B34126B9DDF.jpeg F38EC794-2504-435C-9C32-B81E0021454A.jpeg I moved on from that because I was getting bored of sanding, decided with all the scabby bits popping up around the engine bay and fixings on the chassis legs that the engine was going to come back out and the bay gone over grinding back all the scabs and repainting the full bay potentially. As I'm painting the exterior of the car and the engine was just sitting on the mounts not bolted in I’d be aswell doing the bay and tidying the lot up. So the engine came out and got a wash, it’s covered in stoor from the shed. Had to do it with a bucket and sponge as the hose was frozen solid. That’s been put in the corner now untill the cars painted. 10D99E1F-0807-4312-ADE5-E0DF783E3205.jpeg Started stripping the bay of all its stuff, took the servo and master out as I’m going to try and swap it for some other Renault item, not sure what at the moment. But something a bit bigger to run the 16v brake set. Clio 172 maybe? No abs. I’ll cross that bridge later. 4F987E06-5EEB-4A16-80A2-A716927C6662.jpeg 4300BC7D-3D68-4A9D-886A-1ED22D8008AA.jpeg I didn’t get a photo but I got rid of the lot and it’s ready for a degrease and decent wash before getting prepped for painting. I did start wire wheeling down some spots but I was in the garage most of the day today and it was time for some food and a sit down, it is properly Baltic outside and inside the shed. Feel like it’s actually pretty close to being at the painting stage, I need to do the other side of the windscreen and just grind back and treat the bumper mount on that side. Do the rear window on the drivers side and then I can rub the whole thing down and paint it. I think I’m going to paint it myself, i need to get a starter for my compressor, and work out the logistics of it. Although my mate a couple of garages down his is essentially a booth, so I might see about using that setup instead. Underneath, I might get under it and sort that out before it gets painted aswell, not loads of work just a good bit of cleaning and a bit of taking back surface rust. Maybe a patch here or there but I don’t think so. I’ll look at fuel and brake lines, tank and pump setup then aswell. Get it all sealed up ready for building it up. Getting there, I’m happy with recent progress. More to come soon no doubt, cheers

Great work there, looking forward to the next instalment. I did get to drive a friends sons Renault 5 GT Turbo that had a lot of engine mods done to it, that was rapid. What part of sunny Scotland do you come from? All the best, Norman

Looks like you have been busy. I had a campus I tidied up and fitted a van rear beam and a set of turbo steel wheels. I had to weld the rear wing up in the same place your is rotten. I seen a few for sale the same, wonder why they seem to go rusty there ?

I had a R5 GTT replica in Raider blue on 17" Oz Mitos about 25 years ago. Loved that car, it was a real looker. Slow as hell but pleasant to drive and handled pretty well. Looks like you're going the opposite direction - sleeper. I like that. Bookmarked!

Bookmarked! its actually finished now, or the first incarnation of it is. it is more of a sleeper than anything else like you say. however if you spot the intercooler, seats, clocks or brakes you'd probobly figure it out quick haha

Yes you might be right, better spec 3 doors had pop open rear windows and most I have seen for sale are late Cumpus models. I had to repair the sill that side as well although the rest of the car wasn't too bad.

Got a day down at the garage today from about 12 till 9 Did a bit of tidying up and a re shuffle to allow more space and better access to the car. 37D2941E-56A9-4199-8B0D-5E735C05A54C.jpeg C32F1D4B-9DC7-4E07-B49A-96BC8CFF6ECF.jpeg While the car was getting pushed in and out of the shed the wheel bearing that I’ve always thought would one day separate, did LOL FCA72056-620D-43F5-BE6F-ED7D4171FF81.jpeg Ironic because I had brought a driveshaft nut down that I had finally dug out to hold it all together properly. So got it jacked up and a pallet withcastors under it so I could swing it round to sit side on and give decent access to the underside. 8C44AB8A-BB56-48B7-B22A-50BA6ADB3F0C.jpeg Moved on and stripped the rear beam and front subframe off the car, removed the tank for the first time, removed all the fuel and brake lines from the underside of the car. It’s now at the point where I need to go at it with a knotted wheel on the grinder and see what it leaves me with. This being the first serious look I’ve had though I am happy enough. Although the rust has started eating into metal it all seems solid still. 16A57341-C9E0-4065-89F5-1A4613DB2505.jpeg FE74E992-FAC0-4695-8069-9A3A0BF1E4AD.jpeg So I’m hoping for a couple of days on the grinder and some minimal welding, then get it all sealed up and the running gear back on. 5CF9CA01-D4F8-42CB-B805-2CB5D5B6EF28.jpeg C9DB16EB-C644-49FB-8896-9E5B3BF77A04.jpeg I will look at other peoples complete fuel pump / line set ups to decide what to do with this car, the original fuel lines were shot. Brake lines surprisingly good. But will be replaced. New flexis too, braided I think. More to come, messaged a man about a panel for the rear window today. Positioned the car that way so I can weld that in still. It was at about this point i nearly chopped my thumb off and put myself out the game for about 6 weeks. which was ace. so i did some daft jobs in that time when i could but it was a bit of a wash out and progress was slow.

That’s nearly 4 weeks since i hurt my thumb now, I'm still in my cast/thumb brace but once the fear of jarring it to the point of damaging it in the first couple of weeks subsided I was able to get some work done. Good news. So the car was up in the air and the underside stripped, all looked solid yet crusty to sum it up. It all got an aggressive wire wheeling (slowly lol) and as I had hoped there was nothing under there that warranted cutting out and welding in my eyes. So it got taken back, treated and undersealed. All arches taken back and painted in trusty black Hammerite. I don’t have any pictures of any of that during the process but theres a very dark after shot before the rear axle was bolted back on and the front rested on a palllet with castors. 137060 Very satisfying knowing underside was completed and the body work was all to do for the shell. Being off work I was sitting doing patch all in the house for the first fortnight, lots of money was spent on eBay and the like. Got 5 front struts with ph2 top mounts, rear shocks, fuel pump, fpr and the panel needed for the rear window for this car. And a pile of stuff for the clio Also. 137065 Removed front wishbones and steering rack from the subframe to clean up and paint before refitting. 137057 137058 137059 I got a set of wishbones with new power flex bushes pressed in the wrong way round, nice one. Took those out, I’ll paint and refit them before putting them on the car. Having said that I might refit another set to test it the ph2 top mounts and camber bolts (corrective) are going to give me a useable set up or if it’s going to need more thought. Other wee jobs I’ve been doing on and off, Started giving the vega alloys a freshen up for going on the clio. And I trimmed down a set of valver clocks to fit so hopefully I can use them in the 5 with a bit of re pinning the plugs. Had to remove the computer cluster to fit in the dash, replaced with “Renault” from the standard clocks. I might change it to “GT” or something, it’s the little things haha 137064 137061 Also cleared out and tidied up the garage at home so I can hopefully get the clio bits done and put some more miles on it before the mot runs out. Very satisfying having a clear garage. 137066 So today having got all my deliveries yesterday I decided to have a go at the gaping rusty minging hole at that rear window A reminder 137085 So I’d gotten a panel cut out from a known lad in the scene, I’m not sure if he’s on here. Along with the other 5 parts 137067 So out came the grinder, I’d been a bit dubious as always, the fact it’s door pillar/seatbelt area also a factor slightly but hay ho, we’ve come this far haha 137068 137069 137070 137071 Decided to split the panel I’d got in two, attach the inner part first and use that to help guide the outer. I did contemplate trying to put it in as one. It would have worked but this way is better. 137073 137074 137075 137076 137077 137078 So that went on quite well I thought and was happy with it. Maybe should have stopped, it was going on half 9 at this point but went for the outer skin as well and made 2 mistakes while trimming it down obviously. I’d gone far enough I’d be as well tacking it in as well, and now I’m home writing this it’s mostly welded in there’s just one section to finish tomorrow. 137072 137079 137080 137081 137082 137083 137084 That’s the lot, I’ll get some more done soon. I’m keen to get this Past the paint stage. Who knows if it’ll see the road this year, no promises yet lol Thanks for reading 👍🏼
