My Grand daughter is struggling to ride a bike - even with stabilisers. So as I had a couple of old small bikes I got busy.... Should have enough bits....I found a useful chrome plated tube for the axle and some other tube for bearing and bearing housing. A mock up to check sizes.

The next job is to make a support to hold the axle at its ends...A bit of angle iron should be strong enough. Welded to the rear bike frame and some spacers to get it clear of the chain sprocket.

Then lock the chain sprocket to the axle (drilled through and two self tappers used), lock/weld one wheel to the axle. The other side wheel stub axle screws into a nut welded into the end of the axle tube - note the end is chosen so the axle rotation tightens the stub axle. A quick spray job, a little bag was found and job done. The expensive bit is getting it boxed up and sent to grandchild in this lockdown!

Proper tidy job that, my niece had trouble getting to grips with a bike, that trike would have been just the job. If you've got a bike, could you not build a trailer and deliver it in style? I'm sure that could be classed as exercise.

Proper job there, I took the easy way out and bought one, ot at least Father Christmas did, but if I’d have thought about it a bit more I could have done something similar 👍 How mechanically minded are her parents? Would be cheaper to part strip it and use a courier, and they’d collect?

There were a couple of problems that have now been sorted. The front wheel dropped out as the nuts weren't tightened properly and the "eared" washer had the ears in the slotted hole.... But this took out a brake block so a spare had to be found and used. Also, the lateral location of the back axle was not sufficient as the spacer tube did not have enough wall thickness, a couple of washers has fixed that so all is now good.
