Has anyone on here done it? Any tips on best configurations
I'm a dab hand at carpentry and have a family member who would be able to do the gas bit.
I would prefer something 90vs and a little different from the normal VW Would have to be normal
Budget for a start vehicle would be between 3-5k.
Been looking on Google for inspiration but only seems to bring up huge thirsty American vans or VW's

I’m a very big fan of the Mazda Bongo Friendee campers and have worked on several for customers over the years.
Just watch rust and head gaskets

That says "two berth", do they mean oompa loompa two berth? Maybe some better pics might show it better, I'm not claustrophobic but I was when I saw that! This subject is something we have considered on and off, off at the moment due to wife's health/employment issues and family (and the virus!) but I think we'd look at something less fixed if we went for something Galaxy-sized. I'm thinking platform for bedding, cooking on camp stove type arrangement, but we'd only ever be looking at localish weekends away.

Still a great machine though...just find one without rust... if you can. If you want transit shaped inspiration , look out petetongs thread.

I converted a Merc Sprinter into a camper. I bought an old caravan stripped it, kept what I needed ( cupboards, beds, toilet compartment, cooker, fridge, sinks, lights, then sold the chassis and scrap alloy.. Ill dig out some pics soon if you like...

I know someone who recently did one in a lwb hi top sprinter. Took him ages to find a van that wasn't rusty though. He did a good job of it, photos here: www.campercabin.co.uk/Gallery.html

Just a thought, if you re-register it as a camper it will be allowed into low emission zones, as a van it will not. * (Although this might have changed with ulez,) I'm sure someone will be along to advise, but I think it needs a hob and a sink to be classed as a camper. Also insurance may be easier/cheaper on a camper than a van.
*assuming diesel

The DVLA have made it so tricky to get reclassified (it also involves X number of windows on each side and, believe it or not, stickers) it's almost not worth it. It's a whole new world of vapour barriers, insulation, ceiling fans and split charge relays...

We had a Mitsubishi Delica for a few years. Great car and enough room for 2. I would not mind an early Toyota Hiace or Nissan van.

Oh. I stand corrected... carry on as you were. I had no idea it was so involved. I wonder if builders were lobbing sinks and hobs into their vans and smoking around London in 'motorhomes' Also, I wonder if that is why you see really nicely converted vans with awful palm tree graphics and daft names plastered down the side like "Freedom Roamer" or "Transient Probe"* *I made those up but if you want to stick them on your van I don't mind

Its actually easy to get it re-registered as a Camper the sticker thing is old hat now, ( mine is plain white ) they do a list of things it has to have but its what most campers have fitted anyway... then all you do is take a selection of pictures with receipts of goods bought to complete the project....I did before and after pics also showing the number plate from front and back. Sent it off to the DVLA and if i remember right it was back within two weeks and they returned all the pics! I would built a van you can stand it...Sprinter, Master, Citroen etc...I chose a sprinter as it is rear wheel drive as I tow a competition car and if you choose a FWD van forget towing with it on wet grass no matter mud....but there are quite a few nice MWB or LWB vans to base it on...

You could try something like this:
Nissan Homy 4x4
Registered as a car 70mph, car park spaces no issues, London taxi engine.
It's for sale.

Guidance is here www.gov.uk/government/publications/converting-a-vehicle-into-a-motor-caravan/converting-a-vehicle-into-a-motor-caravanThe guidance lists various external features that are expected of a motorhome, although it stops short of saying that they are all mandatory (to my reading anyway). So you could probably not have stickers for example if it blatantly looked like a camper. On that note, conversions have been turned down because they don't look like a camper - the guidance mentions that the purpose of changing class is to aid identification, so that riot van above may not be approved unless it gets a coat of white lol. Ambulances are quite popular for conversion, nice and roomy with good access, but again should really be unliveried. The internal requirements are stricter, you need permanent fixtures, not just a mattress and an inverter to power a kettle Also you can only convert certain vehicle types to campervan, for example they won't let you re-register a trike to a motor caravan! As strikey mentioned, hard to find good Bongos. Not long ago they were everywhere down here in the Westcountry, but most of the ones I see now are spares or repair horrors where you can put your hand through the holes. The main reason to change class appears to be insurance, cheaper than commercial for vans etc.

I'm glad someone posted the actual guidance here as "pub talk" and the old "i just did it and had no problem mate" stance doesn't help when you could end up spending thousands and not get your conversion registered.
I have a pal who was doing one last year and I tried to tell him that the DVLA were looking to change things up re the no pop tops and extra glass on the sides but he just put his fingers in his ears and sang la la la .... well not literally, so he spent a couple of grand or so on a pop top etc and now they won't re register it because it doesn't comply with the the guidance, which is not guidance at all as they enforce it as "the rules".
So be careful if you do plan to go down the re registering route as they can and will refuse to do it if the guidance/rules are ignored.

I wondered about pop-up tops, is this anything to do with IVA, as you're modifying the monocoque?
