I've been offered a Mazda RX2, has a 616 engine fitted but it has all the original running gear with it, not sure whats its like as I havn't seen it yet, needs a new screen, are there easy to get hold of?
I know you really need to see it but what do you J fans think it worth?.
I'll try to get some pics but the the owners a funny old boy and I dought I could get a camera past him. I know he would like it restored, thats why he has told me about it but it's not really my bag........ or is it!!

Well the worst case scenario is that you need to get a screen made up. Some parts for this model are still available from Australia and Japan (though don't try and ship a windscreen!).
I couldn't tell you what to offer as I don't know what state it's in, but I'd suggest it's got to be worth four figures at least in vaguely restored condition. I only know of one other in the country and Mazda rotaries are rising in value at the moment, so it's difficult to value accurately, it's very much a case of what you say it's worth.
Even if it is a 616 piston engine, these will follow in increasing in value in time and might provide ammunition for a lower initial offer. I'm sure that the Mazda Rotary Club would get hold of a rotary engine in any case, if you wanted to change this.
I'm with the old boy, this is a VERY rare car and should be restored. If I had the room here, I'd do it. If you can't do it, someone from here should see to it, there's enough closet J fans here.

Oh wow! didn't realise they were that rare. Its a four door by the way. Spoke to the owner again today. He says it buried behind loads of other stuff in a barn. Should be getting a call later this week. He also says it been vandalised abit so not sure what i'm going to find. I'm hoping it's going to quite nice though, the chaps pretty fussy.
Some of those pictured on here are lovely and if i do get it and decide to restore it, it will go back to pretty standard.
I'm quite excited now. ;D

Sounds like an awesome find, good luck! There was a nice 616 on French ebay about a year ago, I was very tempted but just kept waiting and waiting for it to be relisted with a slightly lower price each time, eventually my stinginess paid off and it disappeared only about 450 quid I seem to recall. Now i wouldnt hesitiate to A-frame it back. I reckon these old mazdas have some of the best styling outside of Turin. proportions and details are just 100% spot on. I just love the treatment around the square headlights, and the curvy 'haunches'. Having said that, are they italian-styled? I believe the 1500/1800 saloon family was Bertone's handiwork.

My favourite of the early RX's. Unfortunately well out of reach for me over here now, it's not uncommon to see them going for $12K plus That's 30 KP61 Starlet's. Here's my favourite local RX2:

Don't worry, i won't let it sit there, even if it's past it for me, i'll be sure to let you know. It's nice to see alot of people have an interest in this car. I'm gonna chase up the owner again tomorrow, see if i can move things along.

Having said that, are they italian-styled? I believe the 1500/1800 saloon family was Bertone's handiwork. Giugiaro, actually, but he was working for Bertone at the time. As far as I'm aware, the RX-2/616/Capella is an in-house job from Mazda. I think the coupes are sublime. The sedans are merely great. Weird facts: Australia only got Capella badged cars. Even the ones with the 12a were "Capella RE" and not RX-2. As such, we didn't get 616s either.

At last, some pictures (if you can call them that) It's well buried in a barn it took me 1/2 an hour to get through loads of brambles etc. and as you can see there is not a lot of light in there. It's in real good nick. It has a bit of dent in the roof and a bit of rust on the bottom of one door and the bonnet needs on panel beating but thats about it. It has the original hub caps (which are well cool and take me back a few years) and the orginal radio too. It needs a screen after some chav tooser has but a lump of wood through it and the some of the badges in the seat centres are missing. But whats it worth?

I think that is an extraordinarily difficult thing to give you a worthwhile value figure for. There must be all of 1 sale per year of RX-2's in the UK! If it was me I would be looking to pay about £400 max, but then I am a tightwad and not a rotary fanboi so someone else would probably outbid me.

You'll have to work on the basis that the engine is shag, given that's it's unlikely you'll be able to establish its condition in-situ. £500 is the absolute tops, unless he's prepared to get it out of the shed for you!
What are they in tip top condition? As xbollox says there's so few around that there's no precedent. You'd have to compare it with buying and importing an example off trade-me or an equivalent japanese site. £2000-£3000?

Thanks guys, i was thinking somewhere around £400 myself but he wants 1k for it, no offers, i guess he'll not be moving it on to soon. Its far to much for me anyway.
If anyone is interested, let me know and we can meet up and go and have a look at it.
