So some excellent filter suggestions which I will be looking into and implimenting once I have used the fuel in the tank. The pump rebuild kit arrived and I've been reading up about pumps. It seems that if the SU pump has an issue on the suction (inlet) side it can get stuck in the on position and burn out the winding swamp resistor. I've generally not done a huge amount to these pumps but I took the windings out of mine and they were black and there was burn mark in one place, the windings in another pump I stripped up were red which I understand is how they should be.
There is also a correct way to setup the points which is to wind the di\phram in until the points don't throw over, then move back to the nearest hole and then move back four holes and test with it all bolted up. I did this and found that I needed to wind it out two further holes. I then set the clearances on the points (there are some good videos on Youtube).
With all this done it seems to be working well.
From reading through the various articles and watching videos it seems that there is a lot more to the SU pump that you realise at first glance and part of the reason why they don't have a great reputation is people repairing them who don't know what they are doing. The issue with my winding looking burned for example isn't something that I would have spotted without reading about this and having another to compare it to as it doesn't look that bad.

My new carpet set has arrived (horray!) and so i've removed the front seats that were temporary fitted and made the carpet underlay from the roll of material I bought pre COVID.
With my typical luck I ran out of glue before I could fix down the piece on the drivers side crossmember so another can has been ordered from Screwfix and over the weekend I will crack on with the actual carpet.

With fresh glue and a bit more time I fitted the carpet set, shown here before vacuuming to get all the bits of underlay off them from twhen I used them as patterns for the underlay.
Next I vacuumed then (no pictures) and then thought that maybe I would tidy up the seat base frames before refitting the front seats.
I had a can of silver spray Hammerite so cleaned the frame up and gave it a coat.....
Yes I did say silver, seems I have been sent a can labelled as silver but with black paint in it.

Looks great. A nice fresh carpet set does wonders for an interior.

The front seats frames are painted and the seats are back in, i've removed the back trim panels to repair them once I get some vinyl.
I took it out for a spin today and did a brake test on it, when stopping hard the rear wheels lock up noticably. I did this a few times with the same result, clearly if on a corner this could be unnerving.
The master cylinder is off an X300 XJ6 (circa 1995) and I connected the port nearest the pedal to the front brakes and the port nearest the front of the car to the rear which from what I could see seemed to be correct.
The front and rear callipers are from a Jaguar 420 so should be reasonably matched although the 420 is heavier at the rear end.
Have I got the master cylinder porting wrong and if not what are my options for adjusting the rear brake balance?
The car has 3/4 of a tank of fuel so the rear isn't going to get much heavier with just me in the car.

Might drums need more fluid? I’d contemplate swapping the ports over to see what happens. Otherwise lots of pressure reducing valve options adjustable or fixed - sure people on here can recommend. Looks great with new carpets. James

Looks great with new carpets. James Thanks, its front and rear discs so not sure that fluid quantity would be the issue. I can try swapping it over but the port sizes are different so I will end up needing some adaptors and bleeding etc. so would be good to know if its wrong as it is.
I've been reading on some specialist forums where a few people have said the MK2 rear brakes can lock up before the fronts even is standard form, I ought to get the other one out and give it go and see what it does :-)

I've taken it out a fair bit this weekend, i'm getting used to driving it but it doesn't have much in the way of self centering on the steering which might be the low castor angle (i've moved it back as far as I can by mvoing the spacers on the top ball joint) or maybe the new ball joints are just a bit stiff. Heres a few pictures of it in the wild.

What an incredible achievement. And with some major hurdles thrown at you during the process. Well done.

Yeah, I just went back to page 1 to remind me of just how bad it was.
An amazing save.

Superb work. The couple of Mk2's I've driven had no self centering either, bit odd to get used to.

Homer, she looks beautiful mate. You must be soooooo pleased with yourself (Again!). You've done an absolutely superb job with every part. Your restoration posts in this and other forums, honestly were inspiration for me taking on my project. I've been studying those words and pictures from both of your MK2 resto's for years, so thank you so much for sharing. I know how long it takes to write these things up, and you don't always feel like doing it after a hard day in the garage, but they have been a great help to me and, I'm sure, many others. I'm so envious of you driving it, I'm looking forward to driving mine one day. Well done indeed!

Thanks all, its turned out quite well and will be nice when i've finished off the last few bits.
The next one will be even better but not sure what that will be, I've always fancied a Citroen DS and a MK1 Jag but then I already have a Triumph Spitfire and MK1 Mini Estate to do.

How about one of these Homer? My son has fancied doing a project, but needs me to help. Neither of us has a great deal of time. He's busy in Uni and I don't have enough time to work on the projects I have already. So I said I don't mind, as long as it's a 'light' resto and a small car. Well, two weeks ago, we bought this between us. She's a great little runner and no rust underneath. A really great 'rolling resto'. Plenty of parts available and panels are just so cheap. And you don't need much garage space!!

I still have the thought of a Beechams style MK2 Jag with XJR running gear but the IVA issues put me off.
No rush anyway as I need to finish this one, tidy the garage and I have a few other bits and pieces to do before embarking on anything major.
