For sale is my 1979 Vw Baywindow camper van. I have owned this van for 18 years and had many great adventures in him (Vernon). Travelled around the country, lived in him for a while, taken him to festivals and had many a party trip in him I’ve decided to sell him because I'm buying a boat to call home and I would like him to go on more adventures with a new family. Anyway, Vernon’s Spec is as follows:
1979 Tin top Vw camper with a Westfalia Continental interior. A full width Rock n Roll bed, L shaped seating with a dynamic, folding table, plus all the mod-cons like a sink with running water,(water tank needs filling) a gas cooker, a wardrobe complete with tall mirror. Another great feature of these vans is the gas hob that folds up and hides away next to the wardrobe, meaning that when not in use it’s right out of the way.
It has been upholstered by Retro Retrims in a tweed and leatherette style which was done around 12 years ago and still looks good. The front seats have also been upholstered in the same way, which are a 1/3 and 2/3 as the bus was previously originally a minibus model. Also, I have fully replaced the headliner from Vwtrim.
New paint job around 12 years and apart from a few scratches it looks as good as new. Paint job cost me around £3500 as I wanted to make sure all the work I had done would be protected. There are a few faded sections on the roof from been under a cover. I also have the original paint codes and some paint left over from when the work was completed.
The wheels are old style Wolfrace slot mags which were on the van when I brought it many years ago and I still havenʼt seen a van since, with these wheels. The camper has been lowered with a drop of a spline on the back and adjustable front beam. I also have a set of torsion bars from Red 9 Design if required for the front. There is space to lift it if required.
There is also a deluxe kit which came off a early bay from California, opening 1/4 lights at the front.
I have restored him over many years replacing panels, brake lines, brakes and many other items.
The engine was rebuilt as I wanted something that could tackle any hill and make the most out of the 6 rib gearbox. So I have spent around £4500 and placed a few extra toys inside.
Its a Porsche 914 case (which was refurbed),
Twin Dellorto 40'sJake Raby street cam with follows to suit Straight cut gears
1.8 heads
Heavy duty oil pump94 mm barrels and pistonsLightened and balance crank and flywheel
Electric fuel pumpPetronic ignitionBosch 009 chrome dissyTurbo Thomas head and exhaust connected to the heater boxes so is ready for heatersPowder coated redOil breath box which is made from stainlessI took it to a rolling road and it measured 150bhp and 180lb torque so hills are easy.I have done about 3000 miles in it so far so it is all run in.
Pulls like a train and is good on fuel if your foot isn’t made of lead.
There is a Taco mounted under the dash with the wiring to the engine bay but disconnected a while back. Its still there to be reconnected if required.
Good honest van.
