Hi! As car nut in 3rd. generation (Granddad drove a Volvo P1800S from 1968 untill 1990..) my first own car had to be something special and. I found an 73' Alfa Romeo Giulia 1300 Super in decent condition. My first own car just bought and pulled by my mums 245, January 1990. It was not bad but too bad for the big inspection for Dutch registration (It still was Italian registered) which was practically solved by registering it on Italian friends of my parents. So I drove around for about a year on Italian plates (Milano). Something not so easy possible nowadays I'm afraid. After a while mainly the door bottoms and the sills where going from bad to worse so I had to do something. Looking back I made a big mistake by going all the way and taking it apart completely instead of doing partly jobs and keeping it mobile Between these pictures lay more than 10 years! The first part of the work (welding and body untill after paint) was done rather fast within a year but then Beer, Girls and Study (in that sequence) took over interest and the Alfa languashed a long time before it was finished finally. And it was LOW! ;-) Actually it was too low for use so I lifted it a bit again. Since then it has seen a lot of use in the salt free season and it is defenately a stayer: At our 25 year anaversery together I fitted more period Stil Auto Griffo wheels. (was a factory option when new). A lot around 60K. Km. of almost problemless motoring beside a knackered drive shaft spider after tackling 6 Alpine Passes in 3 days which was replaced in Merano (IT) And some electric gremmlins. Drive shaft repair including family lunch during Siesta with the family of the garage owner in Merano IT. The Alfa was also on duty at our wedding day in 2009 Resulting in the need for rear belts in 2011 (Pic is arond 2014, our Twin ladies sleep very well in the back) Although 4 door and having a decent boot (It served most camping hollidays for more than 10 years) the Alfa was a bit smal for hollidays for the family so we started looking for something classic with more space. Our family only knows two car makes being Volvo and Alfa so.. We bought this: A1965 Volvo P210 Duett. Unfortunately we soon discovered that it needed more work than expected The chassis was beyond economicall saving and had to be replaced beside some other welding: And then the worked stopped 3 years ago because we stumbled over a bigger garage (and house) in need of some work but just in budget... In the picture still half full with construction stuff but it fits 2 cars with some space for tools etc. The Duett was left for the time being in my parents garage. Normailly this would be the end of the story concerning status (beside that the Alfa ran into engine damage last summer due to a spark plug failure) but.. I had helped over the last 5 years or so an older local car friend who had a 67' Volvo Amazon 123GT which he also owned since the early 90's but put it aside around 93 with a blown head gasket. He had the head skimmed etc. but did never fit the engine again and had some welding done at a very high quality. But he lost interest and offered it to me as we where in the middle of construction work. Worst timing but a too nice opportunity agains very generous conditions so the Amazon moved also to my parents garage (I'm lucky to be a single child and having car nuts parents The house is finished (for now) and the biggest non car mess has been removed from the garage so I can finally work on my real hobby again. First the Alfa needs a big service as it was the last three years in service without much attention (beside the engine work last year). Next the Duett, test fitting al fittings to the body before final paint and then assembly (it also still needs brakes and electrics). My father likes the Amazon (he had a pair of them in the 60's) and started assembling the engine so it might run probably earlier than the Duett ;-) Pensioners have more wrenching time for some reason.. The GT engine in dads Garage. Wil keep you informed! Thom

Is this still around the corner from you? Yes, on walking distance from my home (how do you know btw, you do not live around the corner..). It is still a point of discussion (some people obviously like more the standard grave yard style roundabouts). I spoke the artist who made it (a local well known landscaper) who had actually a very nice explaining for the symbol of every car used. It was something like: Tractor for the traditional farming region we are in Midget for leisure Truck fo logistics (logistics is big in this area) Fiat ice cream van for tourism Peugeot for the family and people Simca aronde I cannot remember. It achieved the 3rd. place in a national competition about the nicest roundabout but for me it was a winner. I added a picture of when it was just created. They tend to keep the green just low enough so you can just see the cars. Thom

I used to live in Dordrecht and used to have a caravan near Venlo. 2 years ago we spend about 10 weeks in Holland and on our way to Venlo (and avoiding highways) we came across this roundabout. Cheers

Hi Thom, just seen this thread, cool cars you have! I was born in Meijel, just up the road from you. Now live further South in Oirsbeek. Never knew that roundabout, so cool! Indeed much better than the usual dull scene...

Really like your Alfa! I can appreciate the Volvo's too (but there are so many around in this area that I notice them less). I'm not in your area but not far away either. Used to work in Eindhoven region and later also near Aachen.

I do like your toys. I do like an old Volvo myself but that Alfa is just special. Can't beat a 105 series car.

Lovely Alfa you have there, it's frightening to read that it was in bits for ten years but heartening to know it's been soldiering on ever since Big thanks to dikkehemaworst for directing me here, I'd actually read your post a while ago but refrained from commenting out of shame haha. Since you must know this car inside out I'll probably have a few questions for you when I start working on mine again, but first I'd love to know what its first alloys were? I think they are off a series 3 Spider but I have a lot of trouble finding a set, there's too much curse word being sold that I can't filter out since I don't have the proper keywords. I'm looking forward to updates, cheers!

But as stated, only the Guilia is at my home currently, but in a few weeks the Duett will be moved over again. The Amazon stays at my dads for the comming period (first have to build a carport and have to go to the ciry first for that). Thom

Today my mother surprised me with an old friend. In the 80's I got a present at the dealership while my parents got the big one (245 Turbo). It is a bit scruffy (anybody an idea how to get it shiny again without damaging the soft plastic?) but still nice enough for my display in the garage. Scale is around 1/24 Thom

I'm looking forward to updates, cheers! Hi! Nive to find a fellow Guilia owner here. I posted some stuff in your topic. The original 5 spoke wheels are indeed Spider 3 but where manufactured by several companies. Mine are FSP but they where also made by Speedline and some others. I do not know their original name but I have a Spyder 3 folder and I will look up if they state the name in there. They are 6x14"btw and will fit 175/65/14 on a Guilia without modifications to the body and (as I did) you have to bend the rear fender flares a little bit to fit 185/65/14. I'm not a profesional mechanic but a car nut in 3rd generation and an autodidact (learning by doing) so you can ask whatever you like and I will try to help you. Thom

Hello, another dutch giulia owner.. 😎
I've seen that roundabout before but didn't remember where or when.
My giulia is my daily drive, but is a bit less appealing to the eye as yours. Also it has been modified a bit, mainly technically which is not everybody's liking.. 😂
Maybe i'll see you later when these crazy times are over. Perhaps on the Targa Giulia?

Only a bit of work done due to family stuff going on and my father being hospitalized with pancreas problems. However,as the dash was already out of the Giulia for electrics work I also decided to replace the water tubes to and from the heather and the heather valve itself. When I finished the Alfa 18 years ago they where still in good condition but now they where getting brittle and the heather valve had a suspect greenish shine. Officially Alfa changed the design around 1970 from an Alloy heater valve to a plastic one. Advantage of the plastic one is that it can be exchanged without taking the heater apart. Guess what version is installed in my 1973 car? Yes, the old version.... Taking the heather out is almost impossible with the dash in but still not nice with the dashboard out but I managed. However due to the fact that they assembled it from the bottom side (including the clamps that hold the tubes)I had to take it apart completely instead of only partly as I could only access the clamp screws that way. Grrr. But as you can see from the valve picture it was not needless work. The water connector was loose in the tube so drama was programmed. New one is comming in via post and then everything is forgotten again ;-).

While waiting for the new heater valve to arrive I did do a lot of other jobs around the house to keep my 3 witches (two small ones and one larger one) happy and not much to the cars. I also lost my job due to the Corona Economic downpour so also spent a considerable amount of time renewing old contacts and making new ones to find a new job but up to now not successful (mainly heard, lets talk about it in 2 or 3 months if we then know how things are developing...). So if you need a Logistics Manager or Senior Logistics Project Manager ;-). However, Saturday the valve arrived and this morning I started fresh to fit it.. But, pity The clamp for the heater cable is on the opposite side, I can solve that. But wait.. There is no possibility to connect it to the heater housing on the back side (it misses the two allow latches to attach the screws to..).. Grrrrrrr, they sent the wrong one!! (it is for an older pre 1965 101 series Giulietta car not for a Giulia..). New one has (hopefully) been shipped by express today.. Then back to the electrics. Up to now I used an old Hella hazard light relays with attached switch for the hazard light function which was sometimes working and sometimes not.. I already bought a new LED compliant relay (with original clicking sound!) from the UK because I want to change my indicators (and braking lights) to LED to increase visibility in modern traffic. I know that I can make a circuit for the hazard lights with a second relay but I wonder how to build this and even better I wonder if this would be possible with only one indicator elay (the other Led indicator relay I bought for this would be happily adopted to one of my Volvo's). I tried to make a drawing of the works circuit as in the total circuit it would be hard to see ;-) but does anybody know how to do so? Tomorrow I hope to find some time to relocate the main light and petrol pump relays so I do not knock my knee to them anymore while driving (they where added to stop the full current running over the switch and to make starting much easier after parking for a few days which they do very well but at a price of some skin once in a while..).
