Ever since I missed out on a local XK8 with a seized engine, I have had an itch for one of these or it's Supercharged cousin Now I don't have the money for a working one but I can fix most things with a diag tool, an oscilloscope or a hammer.. Shiny work not so much. Need to shift my previous itch of a SAAB 9-3 convertible to make room... (or the Sandrail.... or the Pug... or the other previously broken Jag of course) Budgeting 1.5- 2.5K which seems to be plenty for a project XK8 and just about for an XKR according to what I am seeing on ebay anyway - even some nice working ones on here for not much more. Anyway, please talk me out of it with tales of parts made from sintered unicorn cheese, or into it if anyone knows/hears of one (I'm Isle of Wight so preferably not in Scotland!). I'm all over ebay but a conscientious objector to FB.
Oh and this was the one I missed out on (1.7k), sort of pics because it didn't happen (it is RHD the image is mirrored).

These don't seem to have got cheap like old Jags usually do.
If they aren't rotten, electrical silliness would probably be my biggest fear if they are mechanically sound. You sound like you have that covered.
Everyone should own a Jag at some point in their life. Just going to Tesco down the road feels like an occasion.

Yea, looking for ones with electrical/mechanical issues. I think they are quite cheap if you look at the cost then 50K in 96 is 78K today - pick them up for 5-10% of that.
I have an x-type diesel I bought as scrap - chewed HP pump so I replaced the whole fuel system and the timing chain for good measure! It is nice to drive that's for sure - will be a bit less whiny when I replace the turbo core this afternoon!

I have one sat on my drive 4.0 with a rebuilt gearbox - needs a MOT & some minor cosmetics - some service history and its not a dog - full of intentions to do something with it and I just don't have the time - its at the bottom of your budget and I'm less than hour North of Southampton - can trailer deliver to the IoM ferry if required - PM me if you are interested - Chris

Really wasnt a fan of these when they were launched , i always thought they looked bland. Time however has mellowed my opinion and they do have a simple elegance about them....being cheap is an attractive aspect too.

my dad had one of these for a long time and was very involved in the marque. the chain tensioners are plastic and need replacing with metal tensioners to prevent catastrophic engine failure. its a tricky job and you need a "special tool" but he made one and lent it out to people in the xk8 club.
if you buy an xk and have a head scratching moment and need any help with it, drop me a line can put you in touch. he knows these things inside out
on the whole they're very reliable, only bad thing was the depreciation and the mpg goes in to minus figures when you floor it!

Thanks awoo , seems like a lot of them have had the tensioners done, someone with experience is invaluable. One rolled into the shop today, love that interior- even with the standard drawing pins in the headliner. Engines and gearboxes seem pretty bullet proof and not likely to have had a hard life.

I think a guy ion Ramsgate sorted it (I don't remember any drawing pins, perhaps it was a fix?) I doubt many people under 50 owned these, they're probably all garaged low revs etc I think they're galvanised too

Hi mate, my XK8 sold a few weeks back and that now lives in Essex. That car would have been ideal and exactly what you are after. It had a £1500 bill for timing chains and tensioner done less than a year ago, new tyres all round, was mechanically sound end everything worked. Pulled like a train. Just had a few annoying sensor-related warning messages, but were not actually faults. I will keep an eye out and drop you a PM if I come across anything. They are great cars and you always look back at it when you are walking away from the car. Modern-day E-Type Jag. All the best.

Great, thanks. Found a broken XKR in budget (supercharger = ), but lots of paint issues. Mechanics and electrical gremlins fine, paint not so much fun. Very tempted though..
