Recently acquired 1986 w124 250D with manual transmission (no tachometer, only big fat clock). I could not find other diesel w124 owner in my country and a lot of mechanic isnt familiar with the diesel model.
Several issues that are not critical but can be bothersome. It is otherwise a very nice ride:
1. When pulling in 1st Gear, occasionally the car shudder. Most of the time it is not. I read in this forum that it is common for early model that is not equipped with ARA. Mine doesnt seem to have idle control. There is Y22 on the back of injection. There is vacuum line from y22 into the firewall but it doesnt seem to connect to anything.
2. I experience vibration noise only on 3rd gear (speed 50-55 kmh only). Sounds like metal resonance noise at certain engine load. So I normally use 2nd gear the get close to 55kmh then shift to third gear. Though I feel ideally I should shift to 3rd gear at around 45 kmh
I have been studying my car and replaced the following things:
- Center prop shaft bearing
- Fixed all loose heat shield
-Replaced on chipped prop shaft flex joint
-New manual tran oil
-new differential oil
-Plastering sound deadner on under engine tray and everywhere that i suspect could resonate.
Stuff that I notice arent setup right but still waiting for parts from the US to arrive:
- Injector hardl ines have no clip or rubber shim. there are 3 injector tubing that are connected to each other
- no engine hood sound deadener foam
- metal engine tray has no sound deadening. I read diesel model have thick sound deadener under the engine
-u-bolt that hold exhaust to transmission has no compression washer (belle ville washer)
In regards to my question 2, anything else I should be looking at?
