Ok- So it's been a while since I've worked on this one. I have been VERY BUSY. On what? Face masks and quarantine curse word? No. I did a Chevy Tahoe AWD complete chassis swap on an ice cream van for a buddy- it took MONTHS.. But I finished it. It can be seen on you tube if one were so inclined. I built the trailer from almost nothing, it carries the Power generator to energize the commercial kitchen equipment, most of which it did NOT have before I chopped it to bits and put a 2003 Chevy AWD V8 Tahoe on top of it.    New found respect for the Chevy Tahoe. As it turns out? The Tahoe came before the Durango and the Dodge is a poor copy of the Tahoe, albeit the Dodge has far more power. Sorry I didn't do a proper thread on this one- I just didn't have time. But it turned out darn good and made it the 5 hour drive back home, pulling the trailer. WIN.  But- THIS THREAD is about the hemi dodge pickup. I had the cab set and the ride height ready to go. We were running it slammed down as low as I could get it. Welded into place. The kid texts me and says "Blah blah blah... more tire later... blah blah.. can you RAISE IT UP A FEW INCHES?" Add many hours of curse words and yeah.  So I raised it. Oh and he says Be sure to leave the front wings intact- don't cut them... PFFT! This is the way I do it, so now I had to reconfigure everything.   |

Looks a lot better raised up from the side but the poke would still bother me - i appreciate there may not be space to tuck them further in though.
I would die for one of those ice cream trucks here in the UK, it would be awesome.

My buddy had a Range rover with a BMW engine only a couple weeks ago. I would love to chop one of those up! He wanted too much money for it, so off it went. I'm super cheap and like getting things for almost nothing if I'm going to build it for meself  |

After well into the double digits counting completed swaps/builds etc- I wondered about it. Basically, if you drop off a running driving donor and then a fairly solid vintage shell- it's about 200 hours depending. The ice cream truck? That one was EASILY more than twice that and I had help on several days.
Here's some extra content on the subject. Not that anyone asked... Many of these builds I did purely for the You tube channel at an attempt to get "Youtube money". Yep- pretty much free builds hoping for a billion views. Turns out that I'm just not that talented or interesting nor good looking. LOL It's ok, my self esteem is pretty intact with regards to that fact I never did get "youtube money" of course. Now with 10k subscribers and these days that doesn't account for anything really. You cannot pay your cell phone bill in one month with what you earn from it. Why? Saturation and advertisers moving away from the platform. Figures. If this was 7yrs ago... blah blah blah. "A day late and a dollar short" is usually the deal around here. But the guy that owns the ice cream van asked me this when he picked it up- "Doesn't this ever get to be exhausting?" After I explained to him about how long it took to complete this project and completed at a standard of workmanship that I could live with. Keeping in mind that I'm one guy. It's not just completing the build but one must also answer channel email, research bits bobs and parts, film & production layouts for the videos, edit the footage, do the soundtrack and the voice overs & upload. Those TV guys have got it EASY lol... Let's see Mike Brewer do the whole freakin' thing by himself lol Well, sure- I get tired but look at it like this- if you did your favorite thing in the whole world for 10, 12, 15 hrs a day- would it seem like work? If you were highly engaged, enthralled in the challenge, the problem solving exercises and the creativity- I mean time FLIES by and I barely realize that it's been a week since I'd sat down before 8pm. Something bothering you? Your job (yes I have one but I can choose when I go) bothering you? Family matters? Anxiety over the stupid world virus lockdown? For me- anything that is on my mind- I distract myself with these builds. In their entirety. Everything it takes to complete them. Imagine if you loved Golf, football or swimming and every time something was on your mind- you went and did that. Poof- What was it again that was troubling you? Doesn't matter- that game/swim/build was great. The family is great, the kids are older and the wife works at the (USA Version of the NHS) -side note, all healthy thank God. I will come in early a few nights a week because I love to cook. I prepare and serve dinner for all 4 of us. When I need a break, I sit at the desk and type a bunch of stuff on retro rides that nobody asked to read hahahaha Tomorrow is another day. I actually must travel out into the world tomorrow and stop at the office for some schematics and then pick up sheet metal for the Dodge build. I'll spray everything with pure alcohol because being sick is NOT on our agenda right now. I'm having too much freakin' fun. |

Thanks Grenade. I too love to cook - my Mum was a great teacher - and am enjoying the ironic side effects of COVID: that while others are suffering and many are putting themselves deep in harm's way FOR US, I'm home with my lovely wife and 25 & 20 year old sons, we have enough to eat and can even go play in the garage. All very odd.
You've built a cool niche: so many old cars and trucks are cool to look at but, being honest, a torture to drive. You're liberating them to go have fun. And, you're doing it using materials and techniques that allow mere mortals to commission your work.

So you know that I usually cut the fenders. I fit big tyres and wheels, make up alot of the difference in wheelbase by moving the center of the wheel, off center line of the wing arch. By moving the wheel inside the arch- I can push the cab of the truck back to front, as much as I see the need. I trim the arch "round" and it looks like it's in the center. Win. This allows me to keep the steering column intact, hit the floor pan body mounts even with the cab shell and even use the durango center console in some cases. This kid that owns this Dodge was adamant about me NOT cutting the fenders. I reluctantly agreed- said "Ok I'll see what I can do for you". Famous last words So I have shortened the column itself by 4 inches and pushed the cab rearward to match the wing arch. BullSh...! It made EVERYTHING harder, nothing fits like it usually does and I dunno- I figured I'd get lucky on some of it, but nope. I've realized something about these things- if I'm left alone to Do as I Do.. Then they come out fine and I enjoy it. But when someone holds me to the flame on something- it takes all the luster away from the build. This one (and I know I'll like it when it's done) is a bit of a pain. I'll get there... *this is me whinging a bit.    |
