Hi all, I've started a build project. It's an off-road Audi TT that I'm building with my 10yo daughter; the idea is that she learns some mechanical skills and we get a vehicle that my children can learn to drive in, off-road, before they reach driving age. I'm putting it all on my shiny new Dave Makes Stuff Youtube channel; a friend suggested to me that you guys might be interested, so I figured I'd post it. It's up on some bigger tyres and has had some mildly drastic body mods so far with plenty more planned.

Every time I see a TT I think that'd make a great base for an off reader.

Every time I see a TT I think that'd make a great base for an off reader. Well... here's hoping you're right! I'd wanted to do one but had too much on to justify it as a project just for me, but then my daughter wanted to learn some skills so she could help me with other stuff. Figured the best way in was to buy a breaker for her to take apart with me and eBay the bits; once it had paid me back, the rest of the money would be hers. We got a 2001 A3 with failed gearbox for £200 and got stuck in; her proceeds bought her this TT and we were off! I've been clear with her that if she loses interest, we can either sell or break it for parts at any time and the money's hers, but she's really enthusiastic so far. There've been some real proud father moments along the way

Jesus FFS put a guard on that angle grinder.
Sorry to be blunt but its a pet hate of mine - you are teaching your daughter, and a grinder without a guard is a lethal weapon. You wont be a good dad with your fingers chopped off. It will take all of approx 0.01 of a second to slice straight through your fingers/hand/arm etc. One of my workers has limited eyesight from a grinder - with a guard & goggles! - if a disc lets go (which they do) the bits take no prisoners, the guard will at least keep the shrapnell away from you.
Otherwise great project, but don't be an idiot with power tools.

I've gotten away with the unguarded grinder for a long time, but you're right, a guard would be eminently sensible.
Deathwheel guard it is. I'd feel really bad if I inspired anyone else, my daughter or otherwise, to do things that cost them their fingers.

Extremely glad to hear it Dave,
An excerpt from a govt study below of injuries from angle grinders for your education;
What makes angle grinders so dangerous?
An angle grinder is a tool that needs to be respected. Whether the accessory on that angle grinder is a grinding disc, a cutting disc, or a wire wheel, you have something that is spinning at speeds anywhere from 9,000 to 11,000 RPM, inches from your hands, fingers, body, and face.
We’ve studied the statistics put out by the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) on injuries, and it’s interesting to see that it’s generally two groups of people who are being injured while using angle grinders. It’s either very young people who are just entering the industry or it’s people who have been in the industry 15 or 20 years.
Injuries in the first group are usually the result of a lack of training, where either they don’t know the process, they don’t respect the equipment, or they don’t understand the safety features that are on the grinders. The second group are the people who insist they have been doing it a certain way for years. I can guarantee you, if you are running an angle grinder for your job without a guard, at some point you are going to be injured by that grinder. That is a fact, 100 percent.
An angle grinder disc speed is 220mph at the cutting edge, if a disc explodes the shrapnell ejects at 220mph, people have sustained serious head/brain injuries at over 5 metres away from the bits.

I've got some footage already taken with no guard, so there will be a few shots to come that show no change, but - yeah, going forward, I'll avoid becoming one of the 15-20 year statistics, and will state as much in a video. It's an interesting point; I guess after a long enough period of no major injuries from the grinder (minor ones are inevitable) you come to believe that they're less dangerous than is actually the case.
My 9" grinder is a different matter, by the way - that one still scares the living daylights out of me. The guard remains firmly in place.

Another point to bear in mind (and one that i will hold my hand up as being guilty of doing as a fiscally cautious cornishman) is that athough a worn down 230mm disc will fit on a 115mm machine , the speed rating on the larger disc is not suitable for the smaller machine and COULD lead to disc failure. as pennance for your grinder related shenanegins , can i ask that you keep us updated with pics and not just youboob vids? i know a lot of people find then tedious to watch for a quick catch up on progress. Splendidly bonkers project though.

On the car, yes, I’m very excited by this thread. I have a hankering for a TT now that they’re so cheap. 225 horses for sub 1k? I’m in As for grinders, I had a circular brush in mine, and having unplugged it to change over I plugged it back in without realising the switch was on. It proceeded to leap around all over the place like a demented dog before I managed to unplug. I scared myself so badly I locked up the workshop and didn’t go back for 2 days!! Much renewed respect for the grinder!! Back to the TT

This forum is such a cool place for learning and sharing. Sometimes the guys make me feel real stupid, but it’s only because they care.
I lopped the top off my index finger years ago with a grinder that had neither Guard nor auxiliary handle.
Managed to “Mandage” (Manly bandage with masking tape and paper towel) it all together and finish the job for my neighbour ..
Today you can hardly see where it happened as it all grew back together OK.
But yes, if you want to write the book on rules, I could fill most of the photo pages.
Right.......
Next episode please.

Totally agree Grizz but I think sometimes concerns need to be conveyed in a much better way as a lot of people would be seriously put off. Top project mate, love the TT anyway but as an off roader absolutely brill Bookmarked for the madness.
