The humble side indicator on saab 900,9000,95 is the only part that is interchangable throughout the entire range from the 1980's up to 2011 Apart from lens colour changes there isn't any difference, they have always been a curse word to fit though Are there any other humble external car parts from other makes that stood up for 3 decades across different models. The mini front indicator doesn't count as it appears on everything, and the marina door handle which were massively popular across lots of cars www.aronline.co.uk/opinion/essay-shared-heritage/

This has completely tapped into my inner geek. I can think of some items that were used for a number of years by BL, but 3 decades is a bit of a stretch.

I bought a new interior courtesy light lense for our mk1 golf cabbie that was listed as for a m1golf cab/Audi ur Quattro. Probably the latter to bump up the price!

Just one of the many reasons it’s not still with us

Ford front brake disks I bought a set for a Mk1 Cortina and when they turned up the box showed they fitted Fords from 60s to 90s ( and beyond?)

The inside door handles on my 1993 Golf clipper cabrio are the same as those in my wife's 1967 Beetle.

All Ferraris have the same side repeaters (well not sure about the brand new ones) and they are the same as most Fiat ones.

Allow me, a fairly obvious one... Jag XK stright 6. I'm sure I read the block remained unchanged for 50 years? EDIT: Misread the OP, external parts are what we are talking about. I'll get my coat...

The same Interior boot lamp was used on most Austin Rovers right up until the end in 2005. It still had the Austin emblem moulded into it on my 2005 ZR.

Smiths instruments (speedos, gauges, etc.), basically all largely the same and interchangeable as used on countless makes/models from the 1950s - 1970s.
Same goes for many Lucas starter motors, SU carbs, etc.

The parts must be external - engines are not as standard an external part unless you have a hot rod!
Smith gauges are in everything - they would win outright but the part needs to be branded to the car
The fiat / ferrari indicator lenses are probably one of the best - they really are on every italian motor across a huge period.

Seem to recall the Marina door handle found its way into the Land Rover Discovery and were used into the 90s.

Ford's conical hubcap had a very long run. It was fitted to virtually everything from the Prefect 100E of 1953 to the Mk1 Transit up to 1978. For all I know it was used earlier and later than those dates, too. Amazing to think that during those years no matter what Ford you bought - the top of the range Ford Executive or the base model Transit - the wheels would look the same. The only other hubcap I can think of which had a similarly long run is the Austin hubcap with the A pressed into the middle. That first appeared on the Austin A30 and was still being fitted to the FX4 taxi several decades later. In fact I think that after the FX4 stopped being an Austin they just fitted a blank version of the hubcap, without the A in the middle.
