As a spin off from the hugely valuable Body and Paint thread...... How about an engine bay thread - What paints work well
- High temperature coatings
- When is powdercoating good
- How to clean and restore components
- Rusty nuts - what are the options
- Plating - how to get it done
- Polishing without wearing out your fingers
- Tidy wiring tips
I'll start with my thought on degreasing an engine - which I did today. This is really good stuff Brushed on and agitated with a Valet Pro brush - I'm sure others work well, but that is what I had to hand Rinse off with soapy water in one of these, saves filling up your bores via the pressure washer What pearls of wisdom do you have ? What part of a tidy engine bay have you always struggled with ?

I think engine bays can really add to a motor in a lot of ways but has always some owners don't know when to stop and add every trinket possible and those bo88dy coloured hoses (don't get me started) Nice neat & clean will always work - I had the opportunity to work on a 30's Bugatti in my younger years and the words 'less is more' is so very true Ok that's a bit over budget (well its not if I sell the house whilst SWMBO is working abroad for the next 4 months) Here's a more modern take on a custom engine bay perfectly executed by WoodyM3evo However one of my top tips is that the wiring harness can be the ruin of a engine bay - but with a little time and a roll of harness tape either in plastic / fleece / cloth or self amalgamating can be had for few quid www.autosparks.co.uk/electrical-components/sleeving-conduit-tapes.htmlWith a little time & effort - maybe a few new clips and even the scruffiest of harnesses can be made to look the part

I've always just used a gallon of petrol, a stiff paintbrush and a old toothbrush to degrease stuff at home, then just swill it off with a hose/pressure washer after. Disposable gloves are great for covering over stuff you don't want to get wet.
Engine wise it depends how far you want to go. One thing I would suggest is on any Ally bits get them blasted then give them a light coat of dark silver alloy wheel paint. Keeps them looking like aluminium but you can wipe finger prints off and it stops them oxidising, and it's a lot nicer than normal light silver which makes it look a bit "dodgy recon"

stealthstylz - they look great What are you using for paints on the cast blocks, and ali components ? My engine bay is a lot more old school, but I absolutely refuse to have a polished SU carb top.

Ill hold my hand up to maybe going a bit over the top sometimes. I have a home powdercoating setup and can get carried away. The powdercoating holds up really well against heat, oil and other muck and gives a really easy to clean finish. You cant use it on an exhaust manifold though. I did in the past have a tinker around with home zinc plating and while it looked great at the time after a few years its all turned a rather dull grey as the passivate wore off. I had a issue with high temp paints on the block ect is that after a few years its all looking a bit scabbby even though everything was cleaned back the rust still finds a way. (Maybe it would work batter if i had applied rust inhibitor under the VHT paint) For degreasing an engine bay i find the brush on Gunk to be the best i have used.

I use normal 2 pack gloss black at home.

Although I should add - the main reason the alloy wheel paint is not hard wearing as its going over the clean but rusty finish of whatever state the block is in. I use a Brrrt to knock the scale off and that's it. On the odd engine where a customer has requested it I've wire brushed everything to bare metal and it's been fine over that.

One I'm working one at the moment. Mk3 supra. Many hours in the parts washer. Then 2k epoxy primer and steel grey base coat with 2k clear on cam covers an 1k on other parts. New stainless nuts an bolts as required. And silicone hoses to replace 30year old rubber ones.

2k epoxy on bare metal seems to keep the rust at bay, and provides a nice base to paint onto!

There are various plating options The new pulley for my supercharger has just turned up...... The regular metric bolt to the right I believe is zinc plated The yellowish supercharger components are zinc passivate .... I think But I've no idea what the two pulleys are plated with - they are both steel. I want to get some of my engine components plated and I'm just trying to work out my options. I'll need a "thin" coating on those pulleys, so as not to mess up the grooves.
