WTF?! Bit of a silly idea to me. Erm... RLY? I think emissions are based on the age of the car, which is why people transplanting newer engines into classics get to bin all the cats and curse word.

^ Yep, they go on the year of the car.
Have the joy of explaning this to the MOT man every time I have to MOT my 35. It is a '94 car but with a '90 engine, lovely carb and no cat.

Hmm, he seems to know what he wants. I guess he's one of these people with a comfort zone and maybe knows the A series well and can make the most of it, plus like us, wants to stick with old tech he knows how it works. Plus he gets to keep in with teh Mini crowd, if thats what he wants. I'd personally do bike engine or summat too.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Surely you've got that the wrong way round? If they go on the year of the car you'd need a cat on your 90 engine. It goes on engine year. You get around it on older cars as the emissions limits for them are lower and in some cases they don't count for the test, it's just a smoke test. My 94 mini is (was) a carb with a cat. fecking quality idea that.... *edit * from www.motuk.co.uk/manual_730.htmVehicles fitted with modified engines: If an engine has been modified in any way, it still has to meet the exhaust emission requirements according to the age of the vehicle. Vehicles fitted with a different engine: Test according to which is older, engine or vehicle. e.g. A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine (of whatever make), test to 1991 standards for emission purposes. Note: The onus is on the vehicle presenter to prove engine age. Mike

MOT does go on engine year, if you have something like a '90 engine in a '96 car the emmisions test will be carried out accordingly.
This was something I actually asked my MOT tester last year as I was curious about it myself.

mini's didn't get cats till 1992 I know that. I was saying that they'd test it according to engine age, not car age. Otherwise, being a 94 car it'd need a cat.

LMAO! Note to self, multitasking isn't my thing Yes, sorry Mike, right you are. [edit ref Mikes post] I have to take proof of the engine being a '90 to the MOT station with me.

What's that all about? I quite like the idea of putting something beefy into a smart - particularly the roadster, but this is not it.
I test drove a smart roadster a few years ago and actually quite liked the engine with its' thrumming sound and chirping dump valve- if you could make it a normal manual, put a smaller steering wheel in and ripped out the trim it would be a great little machine. But it looks hard, so I bought a Micra instead...

I'm thinking of ditching the engine completely and running the Benz off the starter motor. Must be 1.5hp at least.
I also have a pipe dream about a steam powered Omega. Don't try to talk me out of it.

Still asking myself why.......even with a Gixxer engine in, it's still a Smart. Even if it sounds like Beelzebub, people will still mistake him for an Estate Agent or a bumboy.

The Oxford has gone off and on the drive numerous times this summer powered like that so that we could get the trailer out. I've resisted the temptation of seeing how far I could get on a fully charged battery though
