Glow plugs are fine new filter, once its been left 12 hours or so it just has to crank for ages before starting, once warm it's fine? Any ideas? I have plugged it in and only fault is EGR which has been faulty before I had this issue I can read live data but haven't a clue what it means?

I would change the fuel filter just in case it's blocked. Might be injector seals but I would change the filter first and prime it.

EGR issues can cause poor starting, I have had 1.9 CDTi Vauxhall’s that just won’t start when the EGR goes bad. Worth investigating. Try blanking it and starting it. It probably won’t drive like it without triggering a reduced engine power mode but it’ll rule it out or not as the start issue. Is the car a Citroen Xsara or a C4? Picasso is a body style, not a model.

P38 diesel Range Rover I had before it blew up did this, fuel was draining back to the tank, caused by corrosion at the sender unit, common fault on them, everybody cures by fitting a non- return valve on the fuel line in the engine bay.

If you can read live data you should be able to see fuel rail pressure, watch what that reads next time you try to cold start it. I'm thinking you have fuel running back to the tank, or dodgy injectors.

I would try new glow plugs again. I have used cheap ones and they don't last

I have changed the duff glow plugs and all filters no different, it was -1 the other morning and it struggled but as it was cracking slower I had the battery tested, so it was on its way out, new one fitted just waiting for another cold snap

Injector leak off pipes gone porus/split and letting air in? Normally makes the 1st start of the day really hard but then starts fine the rest of the day

Did the battery fix it?
Another thing that can go on these is the lift pump ; I believe these are in the engine bay.

First thing to look at is the fuel rail pressure, till you know what that's doing your grasping at straws.

Rail pressure looks ok half way through fitting a new starter You need to know the rail pressure when the engine isnt running to check the sensor is in spec. Then you need to know the pressure when it's cranking over, 250 - 300 bar is somewhere in the ballpark. Below 200 bar the injectors wont be triggered.

It lives! What a curse word of a job! Had to remove the Fuel filter, clutch slave cylinder and a few brackets etc. First one I have seen held on with Allen bolts? The power cable lug is a big brass square, that fits on the old starter but wont fit on the new one due to the shape of the insulator in between the two connections on the Solenoid, hacksaw I hear you all say not a chance of getting it to it! So poped to Aldi for a dremel thing and now it fits, massive difference in the cranking speed cant believe it. I bought this one as its 2.2KW and more teeth oh and it was cheap, does look very well made though www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130941458928?ul_noapp=trueHad a bit of a Farce as I didn't understand the Ebay delivery stuff, opted for it to be delivered to Argos. DPD Mail me to say its at Argos at 09.30, great strips car, jumps in to the spare car argos tell me I need some code from Ebay! Late afternoon I get the code by the time I collect it its dark, what a curse word system. So cold weather is forecast so lets see how it is tomorrow. Thanks for all your help, lets see if I can get another 164000 out of it
