Hi All,
NOTE: I CAN'T SEEM TO UPLOAD IMAGES, I'VE TRIED CLICKING THE 'ADD PICTURES' BUTTON, DRAG AND DROP AND CREATING A PUBLIC LINK TO THE IMAGES IN MY ONEDRIVE ACCOUNT BUT NO DICE. ANY ADVICE? THANKS.
Just wanted to share my Jaguar XJC project.
I bought her in February after promising the Mrs she wouldn't be another project (will she ever learn?)...!
Bodily she’s pretty solid with no obvious problems underneath or in the boot, however there are some bubbles at the base of the C pillars and between the rear quarters and sills, so I’m sure there are horrors awaiting me at some point. There is also a lot of filler in the OS rear quarter that I will have to investigate at some point.
There is a horrid aftermarket glass sunroof which will have to go but will be a nightmare to get rid of, so I’ve toyed with the idea of reinstating the vinyl roof and fitting a full-length Webasto. However I really want to fill the hole and keep it painted metal, we’ll see how that goes….
Paint looks good from a distance but is actually a shoddy blow-over, I have no history with the car but there is evidence in the boot and under the bonnet that the original colour was Lavender Blue, however the wings and bonnet look like they’re from another car because they were originally that BL baby-sick yellow.
Interior is half decent red leather.
I’ve always liked the roguish image that the ‘60s Jags had (Mk2s especially) and although I love the shape of the XJC I think the XJ range lost that, so my plan for the car is to build more of a sporty coupe, less of a refined cruiser.
The car came to me as an auto with a 4.2 S3 engine (presumably with the big valve head) running on carbs. First job was to convert to 5 speed manual and I’ve put in an LT77 from an S3 including the pedal box, clutch master etc. This also necessitated upgrading to the later S3 style brake master as the clutch master wanted to sit where the S2 brake master was. There’s still a bit to do to complete the conversion, I’ll update as I go along.
I don’t have garage or workshop space so my tinkering time is limited in the winter, however I’ve been gathering parts ready for a spring assault.
From the outset I wanted to run injection and I toyed with the idea of fitting the S3 intake setup but controlled with an aftermarket ECU (emerald or whatever), however I recently picked up a brand new triple Weber kit at a bargain price from a guy who bought it for his E-Type but never fitted it. SO the plan has now evolved to fit the Webers then upgrade to EFI with Jenvey throttle bodies at some point.
There was a bit of an overheating issue (common on these I’m told) and the water pump was grumbling so I’ve already replaced that, but I’ve also got a new set of hoses, a re-cored and upgraded radiator, a set of new hoses and a pair of electric fans to go in. Also a new thermostat housing for the Weber manifold.
I also wanted to run electronic ignition and I have a 123 distributor ready to go in and some new leads and plugs.
Other plans are to delete the front silencers for a more rorty sound and stiffen the suspension (and maybe lower it a bit).
After that I intend it to be rolling project so I can tackle the bodywork bit by bit, possibly replacing the Lucas electrics with something a bit more reliable as I go along.
So there you are, I hope you like her!
Cheers
Darren
