I am a lucky badger. After just getting back from a week in Singapore all paid for by work, they have just booked me a week in Las Vegas in January for a conference. I will have an extra day and am planning to hire a cheap car and drive to Hoover Dam and then to the Grand Canyon. This is only a couple of hours away, so should be do'able. What car related stuff is there to see. I know that the Carol Shelby Museum is local, but I want to see the real deal and not museums. Any garages, scrapyards etc that might be worth my time? I am a big fan of Alpina and Porsche - is there anywhere that I can spend my hard earned? A couple for your time.

Grand Canyon is not a couple of hours away!! I did this one day back in 2003, 4 hours each way. Don’t go over 79mph on the freeway. Do get Route 66 on the return journey!

If your extra day is a Saturday then go to the Shelby museum as they have a Cars and Coffee day on Saturdays, starts early though around 7am. The museum opens up early as well so that's two birds etc.
Also Gaudin Porsche is just around the corner so if you've been lucky on the tables you could treat yourself to a days worth of 911 hire!
The Grand Canyon is nearly 300 miles away from Las Vegas so its a day oot!!, to say the least.
The Hoover dam is about 40 miles though so that's doable and the subterranean tour is interesting too, it looks like a James Bond film set to me.
Other than that there's a few customs car/street rod places like Welder Up rat rod shop and Counts Customs, So Cal Speed shop etc if that's your thing.
Brilliant place to holiday though, I'm sure you'll have a good time no matter what you end up doing.

I'm a luck so & so too. I've just got back from a work sponsored Vegas trip too. Grand Canyon is too far as previously mentioned. Hoover Dam is excellent inside and out. Freemont Street is so much more fun than the strip This is great and just a few miles out of town Red Rock Scenic BywayDidn't get chance to do any car stuff, but for spending money, eBay and Amazon were happy to deliver to my hotel. As for hire cars. Join the Emerald Club for National. It is free, and then you can pick from their garage of cars. Occasionally you find a gem. On my Washington DC leg of my trip I blagged this.... Dodge Charger GT - 300bhp+ with track mode, a 0-60 timer in the dash and launch control - on a hire car !! My first ever burnout is courtesy of that car That was $280 for 4 days.

As already said above Grand Canyon is a fair distance away. When I was there I hired a Mustang convertible and drove to Hoover dam and then onto a little town called Kingman where we had lunch in a traditional diner beside an old school garage full of chevy pick ups decade's old, and met a very friendly group of bikers who chatted for a while. From there we travelled along Route 66 to another town called Seligman approx 90 miles away which I believe to be the longest remaining continuous stretch of 66. After a quick wander around it was either a relaxed drive back the way we came or a slightly quicker journey along the interstate. Roof down, Eagles on the ipod, and 66 won it.
Takes you most of the day if you fancied it but you'll see sights and drive roads you'll never forget.
Whatever you choose to do, enjoy 👍.
