A recent trip to Holland I spotted these two on my travels, I refuse to believe they are solely for the Footballers and Reality TV stars although they seem to be the price of a small house! So so cool, I'd love to hear the good and the bad about 'G' ownership from anyone on here

Nothing to really add except I really fancy one too but can't stomach the cost of even the old, basic ones. I would also imagine that the cheaper older ones would be sloooooow. I work abroad and they are tripping over fancy AMG ones here, they sound great.

My boss has one (actually two, but his army version (= wolf) isn´t running currently) and I had to drive it in and out the garage a few times.
It´s quite agricultural, not how I´d expect a benz to be.
And they can rust quite massively underneath.

I used to think they were cool, but when I lived in Dewsbury most of the drug dealers seemed to drive them, and drive them like idiots. This is now all I can think of if I see one.

I don't think there are many on here if any at all - frankly in what is a crowded market place there are possibly better choices at less money but its all down owners opinion really - its probably the steep prices that they command that put most of us off even trying one - that said if they demand such strong money they must be others out there prepared to pay the asking prices of them.

Coincidently I was in a garage yesterday sorting a fault on my Ranger, they had a new age G wagon in, all chrome and carbon (stick on tat had fallen off in places). It was the 6.3 V8, lots of electrical problems apparently
They sound phenomenal though

I have a 1987 300GD I run as a daily. It is as people have said really slow. If someone pull out on you on a motorway on a slight incline you are quickly slowing to 50mph in 4th. It changes the way you drive - its ok if you can keep your speed or drive aggressively. I do go up to Scotland and Yorkshire from Kent in it a lot, all be it slowly. I bought it thinking I Could run it for a couple of years - look after it and sell it for the same money. I have however spent almost as much as the Purchase price in three years. Parts are expensive and most garages won't touch it. Its the one car I don't work on myself at all. It's pretty capeable though and tows well. If i was to do it again I would have bought a later 90's turbo diesel but they were around £15-20k when I was looking. Althoughy it's a 1987 it has later bimpers arches and wheels of an ML. It has definately grown on me and I do love it, sometimes.

I miss mine terribly. 1987 280GE long wheel base. Utterly original and very well maintained by the previous owner. Ruinously expensive to run, 12 mpg was normal, maybe 15 mpg on a reasonable run. I’d have another in a heartbeat. Mine went to Ireland. The new owner pulled out the engine and box and fitted a Sprinter 5 cylinder turbo diesel and a manual box.

I owned this for about 5 years and spent a lot of time sorting it out, and then sold it just before the prices went stupid. It was a 300 GD SWB (460) slow as you like but would go anywhere. I joined the club and drove a fair few variants. It just depend how fast you want to go on road and how comfortable you want to be. As for a P4 being a decent alternative have you driven a P4 ? I am surprised you make that comparison. I have drove a reasonable condition P4 on one of the Canary islands about 10 years ago. When purchased

Friends had an old LWB one and loved it for European trips even with the fuel consumption. Sadly the wife drove it on a four hour stint in Portugal with the oil warning light on and seized the engine. It was diagnosed as needing a new block or short engine and that was more than the whole thing was worth. Sold it to a Portuguese guy who promptly re-engined it with a diesel from something less exotic.
