An incredible Volvo 244GL in pampered original condition and 41,135 miles.
EQUIPMENT
Front spoiler, halogen headlights, headlamp washer/wipers, day running lights, steel sliding sunroof, tinted windows, power steering, central locking, crumple zones, steel tubes welded in the doors, engine bay light, luggage compartment courtesy light, three-point inertia reel seat-belts front and rear, heated driver’s seat, bulb integrity sensor, illuminated and lockable glove compartment with a table and make-up mirror, rev counter, rear centre armrest, safety belt reminders, quartz clock, ignition/lights buzzer warning, cigar lighter. Dealer Accessories; Volvo MW/LW radio, towbar, window etching.
EXTERIOR
Metallic paint was standard on the 244GL and this stunning car is finished in Redwood Metallic, (Code 175). Volvo claimed in their 1982 literature that the average life expectancy of a Volvo is 18.7 years, 2.7 years longer than their closest rival Mercedes-Benz, and judging by the depth of shine of this first paint car you can believe their claims! All the chrome trim has a mirror finish and the large impact rubber bumpers and plastic trim are in fantastic order. All glass is Volvo branded Templex and laminated to the front with Identicar window etching to all sections. Volvo mudflaps are still attached to all four corners and period number plates remain fitted. Garaged continually throughout its life, all wheel arch lips, door bottoms, underside and apertures are spotless and a credit to the careful ownership and low 41,135 miles. A real time warp example and unrivalled in many respects.
INTERIOR
The famous Volvo virtues of safety, reliability and durability are evident everywhere in this fine cabin. Upgraded Plush upholstery standard on the GL model is finished in Copper-brown and remains unworn and clean thanks to the low owner/low mile credentials. Orthopaedic specialists helped to design the Volvo driver’s seat with lumbar support and integrated seat heating resulting in comfort and support. Passengers can enjoy one of 14 air outlets to produce efficient distribution of hot or cold air and all switch gear, controls and gauges operate including the Volvo Quartz clock and optional Volvo MW/LW radio. The boot area, protected by a rubber over mat, is immaculate and still attached are stickers advising ‘how to use the jack’ to the boot lid and to ‘secure long load’ through the hatch into the cabin area. An impeccable and functional 244 interior promoting a pleasant and safe driving environment.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
New for 1982 and fitted to the 244GL was the 2.3 litre carburettor B23A in-line 4-cylinder engine. Effortless and purposeful it produces 112hp and works in perfect combination with the optional 3 stage torque convertor automatic transmission. Purists will marvel at the pristine engine bay with all identification plates and stampings clearly visible. Even the delicate stickers remain attached such as the Volvo coolant sticker fitted to the header tank. A documented cambelt change was carried out in December 2019 at 38,639 miles. Amazing.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original 14in steel wheels are finished in the correct bronze tint often lost to silver shades on refurbishment and being the higher spec GL model, has the attractive chrome embellishers, all unmarked. All four corners are shod in Michelin 185/70 R14 tyres, fitted brand new in December 2019 with masses of tread and the spare wheel still wears the original Michelin MXL tyre. Triangle split, dual-circuit brake system and stepped bore master cylinder accompanies power assisted and ventilated disc brakes to the front and drums to the rear, bringing the car to a straight and steady halt.
HISTORY FILE
Supplied new on the 27th September 1982 to a Dr Edwin Mansell before being sold to long-term owner two years later, Mr Roger Little. Mr Little purchased the car from Brian Stevens Cars in Enfield, specialists in one owner low mileage cars for £5,795. Being the conscientious type, he opted for the Used Vehicle warranty for peace of mind and the car has remained continually garaged and used sparingly with old MOT certificates validating the low 41,135 miles. Such was his fondness and devotion for this car that a second daily vehicle was purchased so his pride and joy 244 could remain carefully stored with wheels off the ground in the heated garage! In 2019 Mr Little made the difficult decision to sell his pride and joy and KGF Classic Cars were delighted to find the next appreciative owner, Mr David land Levitt, an avid Volvo 200 Series enthusiast who has owned many examples, both in the UK and while living in the USA. Wanting to preserve the car in prime condition, Mr Lang Levitt paid £250+VAT per month to have the car garaged in an underground car park near his home in Central London and he even purchased a tailor made and very expensive cover which he has kindly gifted to stay with the car. A major service was also carried out under his ownership. A change in employment role now requires Mr Lang Levitt to travel extensively and he wishes not to use the car as an everyday vehicle. KGF Classic Cars were once again hugely keen to acquire the car back knowing just how superb it is! Gaining an increasing following from a new generation of buyer drawn to programmes such as Luther and Volvo traditionalists struggling to find such a pure, low mileage 200 Series, this example will be the one by which others are judged.
MOT January 2022, HPI Clear.
