Had the truck for two years. Not done a ton of miles, maybe 2000 Just tripped over to 40k miles a few weeks ago. But 20 years of living out back when driving, took its toll on the vinyl bed cover. When I bought it, the previous owner had poked holes through the bed cover that had shrunk over time, and used cable ties to keep it in position. Recently when I went to fetch the FRANKENTRACTOR from Frankenhealey I had to refit the cover once 5he tractor was unloaded. I managed to tear it badly, trying to stretch it in the cold. Keep in mind it has survived 20 years. Unfortunately Extang do.not make the Blackmax for this model anymore, I called America about it. And it does not seem like I will be finding a used replacement for it in America either. So plan B for now seems to be to use a local “Sailmaker” who claims he can make something to cover the rear in a variety of fabrics. Multiple colours available. Very tempting is the option to colour match the cover vs going back to black. So I went to Chatham Pier today, only to find the shop shut. Typical. But at least a couple of pics made themselves available. I am also hoping to hear from the guy I bought the wheels from who happens to be a high end upholsterer. Fingers crossed I can get something decent made up.

Chatting with Steve, the guy I bought the wheels for the truck from last night about him making the cover.
He is a somewhat high end upholsterer, working on Morgans etc.
His pricing is below, also 130 miles from here.
Labour 6 hours @£55 per hour.£330.00p , 2.5 meters material . Everflex black £75 or Mohair Riven. £150 + new hold down clips / press studs £40.00p
So not a cheap outcome, but I was expecting similar if I even found a used Extang cover to buy in the USA.
And similarly, if I went for something new, if it were available in the UK.
The sailmaker would be around £150.00 and a functional but not pretty piece.
Choices ehhh.

early mondeo estate ? .... just sayin'... Completely defeats the point of the exercise….. buying a silly American car. Harsh! but true ... however , big wheels and big(ger) engine and it would fit your drive !

You get what you pay for as always, this is a nice truck and keeping it nice is always going to cost a bit. I would imagine that the depreciation is pretty much zero so overall not too bad on a cost per year basis. Going for the cheaper option sounds like it would add little or no value, expensive option would maintain it or raise it a bit. People into trucks will always appreciate a really good cover - key to the use of the truck everyday. James

If you do decide to go to Newton Commercial, be sure to pop in as I am on the way just off the A12. Kettle can go on or there's Pepsi Max in the fridge. I even have biscuits!

As well as car upholsters it maybe worth looking at marine upholsters/cover makers, I'm sure there must be a few round your part of the World.

Saying that….. I am finding myself with my typical end of year itch. If you do decide to go to Newton Commercial, be sure to pop in as I am on the way just off the A12. I mentioned that cheap option is a sail maker further up. But it is not really ideal, nice truck, wibblepoo cover, despit the price being 25% of the Mohair etc option.

Remember the fog light I lost when I went to Frankenhealey to collect the tractor? Today after marathon 100 minute Teams meeting I though repairing it was a good way to recover and regain my equilibrium. Once repaired I had a coffee and called the MOT station to see when I could go down to have the truck tested. 4.30 today became available just a few minutes ago, due to cancellation, interested? Of course I was. They were running late. But we made it onto the ramp and by 5.30 the truck had a fresh MOT. The truck must have impressed the young guy testing it, he told me the emissions were brilliantly in range, and that it was a cool truck, he loved driving it into the shop. So we have a taxed, insured and tested truck for another year. The last 12 months it only did 600 miles, which included the 320 miles it did a few weeks ago to fetch the FRANKENTRACTOR. I really do not deserve to have this truck if I am not going to use it.

I'm sure there must be someone who does this kind of stuff locally round you. I'll send you a no. of a man I know.

You're all talking like the original is a piece worthy of locking away in a glass cabinet in a prestigious museum as an example of exceptional craftsmanship. It's a mass-produced vinyl rectangle attached with a load of press fasteners, which is a straightforward job for anyone who has made heavy upholstery, large covers, sails or similar. Any sort of fabric would be a visual upgrade. But Mohair for a bed cover??
Given a choice of colour, I would match the bonnet stripes.

Do look look out the window at it and a secret smile when you think no-one's looking? Do you look back at it when parking it? Admire it as you walk back to it? Did you enjoy the 600 miles being in it - not the traffic you were in, but just being in it? Then you are the right person to own it. Even if it did no other miles last year than to and from the MOT. Once that stops and it becomes transport . . . then is the time to sell it on. Or it simply gets parked and starts to return to the earth - then sell it to someone who will get all the above. Or if you want to enjoy something else, and common sense dictates you should sell it to release funds and space. For me, the risk of the something else not causing me to smile, look back, just enjoy going out and seeing it there, means I still own a Lancia integrale after close to 30 yrs rather than replace it . . . My Dodge Challenger gives me a similar feeling . . . but not quite so much, so it is getting closer to being gone. But then I press the start button . . . and the V8 comes to life, rocking it on the springs . . .
