If you can get a pressed metal State plate made, with the correct spacing they are fine for MOT. As posted above, as long as it is near enough to what is expected its good for MOT. We are NOT allowed to measure plates or characters, just visually "is that about right" As for ANPR and legality wise, that is a whole different can o worms

I can't see why you can't fit the 51 plate. 51 is 1st SEPTEMBER 2001 to 28/29th FEBRUARY 2002. Your truck was registered Dec 2001 so fits that criteria surely? I'd stay clean with the spacing though. I've been pulled before now for dodgy spacing in a friends van. Copper was cool but warned if he saw it again it would be ticketed.

Texas uses totally flat plates that are printed black over the white reflective backing, they're not stamped any more. A few states have gone that way too because it's cheaper. Louisiana still has press-stamped plates, gives the inmates at the prison something to earn a wage doing.

It might have been first registered in the UK in December 01, but it must have been declared “first used/registered overseas” to have been issued the earlier plate. If that’s the case, then you can’t use a later plate than the one on there. Have you looked on the DVLA’s auction listings Rian? They have northern Irish style plates from £100. You could get a six digit one cheaply, provided you don’t mind an I or a Z.

There are two schools on 'personal plates' 1. That's individual and sort of reads XXXXXXX 2. What a complete throbber
I'm not bothered, mainly because both DU66ERS is taken (my daily is late 2016) and went for about £1200 and i'm too tight for that as a vanity item, but each to their own.

Seems a but weird that DVLA would allocate a Y if a 51 was correct unless I'm reading this all wrong?

The truck was owned by a US Serviceman before getting a V5c I certainly do not claim to understand it all. But maybe the way to go is find a sensibly cheap dateless plate and fit that. Or just fit some neat, clean plates.

Also, depending on the font size, States Plates don't always work properly I had a pair made up for mine many years ago, back in my foolish years I guess. But they look like this after the accident

"$420.00 of those American Dollars..." "...and $5.00 hookers." That's a lot of hookers Rian, and how would the back hold up? I'm not sure on the plate idea, but it's probably safer all round. Who said I was going to use my back? Plate still bothersome. I am soooooo swinging between yes and no.

So basically, you still can't legally use those US plates because they don't conform to the standards of UK license plates. The size is fine, it's the style and size of the letters that is the issue. HOWEVER my personal feelings are that you are going to be a LOT less likely reprimanded for those plates than making a plate into a weird spaced combo (in the eyes of the law, not me) as it's kind of expected to have 'American' style plates on an American car. I am always prepared to expect any officer of the law to be both sensible and fair. This includes logic, sense of humour and common sense which covers the fact that maybe I was not being a tool. So I agree with you, it could all be acceptable. PS. Spare plates in the cab.

Thanks timbo Really useful information. As you say, I need to read, interpret and execute accordingly and never claim ignorance of the law. What I saw and liked was this. Tricycles, quadricycles and imported vehicles that do not have the space for standard sized registration plates can have smaller registration plates. Just going to throw this potentially chocolate-depending-on-how-you-want-to-look-at-it spanner into the works: So a curvy US typeface may not be legal, but, as I said, a lot more ignorable to me in terms of 'is it legal' or not on the street. I'd say go for it, keep a legal set stowed away in the truck just in case you meet MrJobsworth. American style plates part 2 So what we are saying, is that these should work. I would go with a set of these “show plates” in this style. And hopefully they will be acceptable. Any experience from anyone using this specific style plate with law enforcement in the UK ? As always, thanks for the input.

I have an 69 MGB registered here in 1978 with a G reg suffix and a 1955 car registered here in 1999 with a pre 1963 reg plate, it generally goes off year of manufacture no registration. I'd be steering well clear of anything to do with 51 plate and onward as it attracts all kinds of problems with emission charges for tax, I'd rather stick with the £275, or whatever it is now, tax band and stay off the greenies radar.

Very good thinking. I am certainly just looking for anything randomly dateless, that will look nice as an American style plate.

Apart from the emissions tax groups not applying to imported vehicles, and they still go by Cubic Capacity like pre 2001 stuff
