Won't need spigot rings, they are OE wheels Stud centric, not hub centric and the taper on the wheel nuts centres and locates the alloy  Happy to have you guys tell me what I need to know here guys. Thanks Wheels look great Grizz. Re centre caps, look at the guy advertising centre caps in the for sale section. He might do some that fit. I did look, thank you. Mercdan68 and fr€$h&m1nt¥ are possibly along with a few others the guys to ask about this....... Wheel protection. One of my friends, Paul, off a bike forum suggested I consider protecting the wheels with the following product. And Henry @rider51 suggested ceramic coating. Now in my wildest dreams I never thought there was a way to protect the protection on the wheels, but there is a learning in every day. What is the consensus here please .jpg) I was looking at some really manky wheels in Romford, supposedly from a Cobra (Replica?) that were Ex Jaguar to possibly run as winter wheels. Seller reckons the tyres are good, I am not convinced. I showed him the rears on the truck, even the central moulding stripe has not been run off, Nankangs, and yet, in my book, only good for destruction. .HEIC) These do look pretty rubbish for £50.00 but could they be a chance worth taking @rider51 ? Imagine them blasted, painted with Hammerite or some bronze type colour, winter wheels. .jpg) .PNG) And finally, pics taken this morning. These were removed again after the photoshoot, done for the pleasure of those of you who do take the time to write, click respond, share knowledge. .HEIC) .HEIC) And the rear view. Really happy so far. .HEIC) Once I figure the wheel nuts, centre caps etc, we should be in business. Next job.........

Winter wheels with a set of full winter tyres makes sense to me if you need (want !) to use it in the winter and not wrap it up in the garage. Have you ever run winter tyres ? If you wait a month or so winter tyre prices will drop off. Main benefit not so much snow performance but once below 7deg they have more grip wet and dry and don’t wear out so fast. With the power / weight distribution you have suspect you will need all the help you can get in the winter.
Summer wheels are going to look mega whatever caps you end up with.

Wheels look great, if you want winter tyres go for it, if your only really worried about the new wheels it's probably cheaper to keep the good looking wheels all year round and just to have them re-done every 5 years.
If you are going to use it over the winter when it gets warmer I would also look at getting the underbody cleaned up and waxed, looking at those photos there is quite a bit of surface rust, leave this for another 2 or 3 winters and it could begin to get a hold.

I've tried both Chemical Guys Wheel Guard... www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/chemical-guys-wheel-guardand Gtechniq C5 ... www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/gtechniq-c5-wheel-armour... both on bare polished unlacquered alloy wheels. (Although the Chemical Guys Wheel Guard looks like it's a different product when I used it 9 years ago, at that time I think it was the same product as PoorBoys Wheel Sealant) ... www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/poorboys-wheel-sealantI found the waxes (Chemical Guys / PoorBoys) easier to use mainly because you can see where you've applied and where you've buffed off as they have colour / visible consistency until buffed off. The Gtechniq one is a clear liquid (not sure if it's ceramic or not) so harder to tell if you've missed any spots as you've gone. Both had similar longevity from what I remember and I didn't keep on top of either enough to maintain their machine polish finish. Not sure if you've had the machine cut areas lacquered? If you have then the protectiveness of the coating isn't as important (If you get a stone chip or kerb rash then it would break through the lacquer any way and would need to be re-machined to rectify) |

Well, to get a few responses in one post:
Okay, centre caps it is then! Needing them on the front and not using them in the back would probably look weird.
As much as the centrecaps came out nice enough in the aluminised chrome look, after seeing the gif, I'm swaying to making them dark anthracite like the wheel surfaces, using contrasting nuts.
Oh, and I also swear by the spigot rings to help centre the wheels. I didn't have them for quite some time but never got rid of a wobble. When I finally found/bought the rings, it was a massive difference.

So by choice, the Focus will be the snow, winter and salt when I need to drive around, keeping the truck for more pleasant pursuits. I really liked your old wheels as you know. Wheels are a transformation. Looks stunning. You probably know this but when buying used tyres you can check the age of them. 4 numbers together. Eg 2618 the tyres were made 26th week of 2018. Handy to know when haggling especially they are 06 like some I bought once! Had to ditch them as worryingly old.

Wheels are a transformation. Looks stunning. You probably know this but when buying used tyres you can check the age of them. 4 numbers together. Eg 2618 the tyres were made 26th week of 2018. Handy to know when haggling especially they are 06 like some I bought once! Had to ditch them as worryingly old. I know about the dates, not al3ays easy to find. But you are right, certainly a bargaining chip. Cost of removing tyres and disposal..... how much? Sellers often get quite defensive, not realising tyres are dead. |

My tyre chap is pretty good and just takes a token for removal and disposal as I'm always buying tyres and my daughters are 😉, you are right though some sellers just see good tread.

Man in a brown van rang the doorbell. I was made happy. .JPG) Thanks to Robert Pilgrim for selling me an original airbag leather covered steering wheel for the truck, as a standby to replace the Grant wheel fitted, originally wanted to replace it, but have got used to it now. So it will be stashed along with some other original parts just to keep the truck as original as possible. At £40.00 for the steering plus airbag charge, he did me a massive favour, and courier was £15.00 so a total of £55.00 .jpg) Also included in the parcel was an intact top cowl for the radiator as mine is in bits, including riveted pieces to keep it together. Chuffed to bits to be able to repair this. When my battery started to fail, I replaced it, and on removing the old unit, I realised the tray was filled with holes. Again, Robert found me one on his outward bound steel scrap pile. FOC This needs to be media blasted and then primed and painted. Most importantly....... Alongside the new wheels I bought, there were no wheel nuts. And these trucks use a specialised wheel nut to go with the centre caps. Look at the detail. 20 vital parts. .jpg) So threads on the outside as well,. .jpg) The plastic caps screw onto the wheel nuts, holding the centre caps in place. .jpg) .HEIC) .HEIC) Sold the 5 Cragars to a good friend last night for his 80’s Dayvan build. Tyres, as mentioned before were great as far as tread is concerned. Rears are good for burnouts...... Paul Y is on standby. And fronts, not really good for a jolly to the coast, are they. .HEIC) Today I wanted to tint the side glass, but between the weather and the day job, all I got done was to give the stuck a decent wash, and it does like to be clean and shiny. While washing, I noticed the exhaust tailpipe........... made me wonder if this is all one system, recalling the video Paul Y made the day I departed in it. .HEIC) Also did another small job today. More later. |
